    That’s a true classic right there, very keen to get one, I’m old enough to have purchased the hero model DW-5200 new, in 1984, it’s been everywhere, including the gulf (‘91)with the RAF and it has been superb, on my 3rd battery still and I have to say it has no scratch on the mineral crystal, yet. Have to say that the 5000U seems to be just about perfect as a one watch collection. With regard to the new light, from what I’ve heard, they are built to never dim, whereas the blue backlight, though superb, they do dim with age. Great review, I’m sure I’ll get one in the next few months.

    This is a great watch. It continues the classic looks and heritage of the GW-5000 while giving it some nice upgrades. For this price, I would like to see a sapphire crystal, but it's not a dealbreaker for me. The watch is Casio's most premium resin covered square, but it comes with a premium price. I agree it would be nice if it were $50 less. As it is, I think this watch is mostly for two types of people: those who want just a premium, functional, single watch to wear that will last them many years; and, diehard g-shock enthusiasts and collectors like myself. For everyone else, Casio's GW-M5610 will give the same functionality (including solar power and MB6) at about 1/3 the price. Nice review!

    Thank you for the backlight contrast between the white LED from the GW-5000U and the EL!
    I recently got a GW-5000U and love it to death! I really like the white LED color (it's actually not harsh on the eyes at all, even when looking at it in the middle of the night after waking up from sleep) and the fact that it doesn't sap the battery as much as the EL does, nor will it fade over many uses like the EL does (supposedly).
    However, I thought there was something going on with my vision in the light not being evenly distributed across the screen since it looked darker in the upper left corner, but your video captured and confirmed that perfectly at 9:28.
    I could see how that might drive some people crazy, but it's not anything for me to get rid of the watch over, especially with all the awesome upgrades the GW-5000U's module (3495) has over its predecessor, the GW-5000 (with module 3159). Thanks again!! 😁

    The materials make the price premium worth it - on ALL my other Squares (except the titanium GWMB-5000 squares), I’ve swapped out straps for Marine National Straps using Jays & Kays Adapters. This strap is comfortable (it really is supple) and the watch sits without flopping around. I’m a Screwback fan but this one rules them all - the color palette is perfect. The watch is tactical but doesn’t sacrifice legibility for being stealth.
    I’m a Square fanatic but if I had to take only one, this might be it. Well, one plus a DW-5600 as a beater.

    I own a 5000U. Improvements: This watch is a tool for me. I use it at night often. The intermittent 1.5 or 3 second backlight is useless. Option for a 15 second, or even manual on/off back light so users can see functions in the dark without having to hit the light button again. Second: Wider band please. Personal preference of course but I'd like to see this watch band a consistent width from lug to clasp or no more than a 1mm taper. Lastly; of course the buttons are hard to get to without some concentration. Larger buttons would be great but if a diameter increase is not possible, consider making the buttons taller by .5mm and maybe some knurling. I like this watch. It could be better as a tool for us working guys with some minor tweaks.

    Its the law of diminishing returns. As you ascend most product lines, that slightly nicer is more and more expensive. It helps justify the lower volume produced from a business standpoint. All in all, you will always pay a premium for the best of any line up that is more than you perceive it should cost as they know some people will go for it. Me for example. Cheers !

    Square, understated display, built to last🤙
    I have the GW-5000-1JF/3159, I bought it to replace a non-G-shock Casio DW-2500 (older than me, one of its lugs broke at work :C), I also added the composite band, slightly different design, mine doesn't have these dots on each link, just a textured pattern.
    Overall, the value is great IMO. The looks, the screw back, the feel. I don't collect and don't babysit it either, so to me it's more of a trusty tool, use it everywhere, everyday. It's not cheap, but it's not something like the MRG... That's a line that is super hard for me to cross, it's superior and probably can take much more of of a beating. But I find it hard to subject such a purchase to everyday abuse 😂

      The bracelet definitely needed some massaging, while listed as compatible when I bought it, it certainly didn't fit properly as expected. The first time I tried the pins that came with it, but they would not sit in place, so I swapped for thinner pins, but under stress they easily bent, now I don't remember if I removed the bezel cover before trying to install it or if that would have made any difference.
      Looking at the stock part where the pins slide into, they were kind of angular, so I ended shaving and rounding them up until the thicker pins sat nicely in place. Been holding up fine since April of 2015.

Cost me around £184 to bring the 1cjf to the uk which I think is very pricey when I could have got the the GW-M5610MOYC-1ER for almost £60 less. Not sure if the stainless case and made in Japan is worth paying £270ish for though(my guess on total price to bring to the uk). You think grabbing this 5000u is still worth the purchase?

The square design takes me back to when i was a teenager. This new GW5000u could almost replace my 1987 model, love the dlc metal case and screwdown case back..., but the dial lacks color and design concepts to keep my interest as the original did. That’s because putting sapphire on a G-Shock is expensive. You cannot put those ordinary cheap sapphires you find at wholesale. It needs to be cut in that specific form which is not as easy as with mineral. It needs to be thick enough to resist shocks, a 1mm sapphire will shatter way to easy. And when you put such sapphire, you’d find the light transmission is very, very poor affecting legibility and charging. So you need very high quality coatings on the underside to solve this issue. People say sapphire is cheap, it is not for a digital G-Shock, it is very expensive, that’s why you see it only on very expensive G-Shocks

      @@thetimebombardier you‘re welcome! Nice channel 🐲🤘🏼! I think i will keep it on the resin strap; i like the ruggedness, light weight and comfort of it. The squares do fit me quite nicely with it. I hope the dlc is not to shiny and reflective- but i understand their choice from my experience with dlc finished, matt knifeblades. Their surface is a bit grippy, rough to the touch and less smooth, which might be wearing a bit uncomfortable. My watch will arrive today, so i am very excited to rock this badboy on a nice friday 🫡🎖!

    Until they start selling the 1ER version of this watch in the UK, it's unfortunately not one I can purchase.
    I will never pay import fees, custom fees, handling fees, and whatever crap the government forces consumers to pay when importing items from overseas.
    I'm just trying to find a good quality solar atomic digital G-Shock, which I thought would be easy, but further research has shown has proven me wrong.
    The UK G-Shock market is barren, so many fan favourite models like the Frogman are completely missing.

      hey Stardust yeah these taxes are getting worse everyday, I sent a £1 value parcel to Poland and the recipient got charged £12 in effin taxes... beyond stupid... have you looked at the rangemans or mudmasters?

    • @StardustLegacyFighter
      @StardustLegacyFighter Před rokem +2

      @@thetimebombardier Wow, that's such a rip off!
      I already have the OG Mudmaster, which I actually picked up recently, but I mainly use it for its amazing analog display.
      I was actually set on buying the GW-9400, but hearing about ppl having lug issues and it's overall super chunky form factor completely put me off.
      I just want a solid all-rounder digital watch, to serve as a successor to my first ever Casio digital watch I ever worn.
      I know the GW-M5610 is a good alternative to the GW-5000U, but it's one I have to try first to see if it's not too cheap feeling.
      I'm still hoping for the GW-5000U to get officially released in the UK.

      @@StardustLegacyFighter roger that understood, the 5610 is cool but the buttons are darned fiddly 😅😅 the new mudman will be out soon but it looks like a cheap fake, all blocky and fugly...

    • @StardustLegacyFighter
      @StardustLegacyFighter Před rokem +2

      @thetimebombardier I did have a look at the new Mudman since it's unofficially meant to be the successor to the GW-9400.
      It does have all the key features and a few new things like the dual LCD display and carbon core guard.
      However, I find the design to be a copy of the Mudmasters, and I don't want to have a cheaper looking clone of it.
      The other issue I have is the way the full time is shown on the display, I would have preferred to have HH:MM:SS on the same line, instead of having seconds in a different position.
      Anyways, I'll try out GW-M5610u and see what it feels like, and if it's too cheap feeling then I might have to bite the bullet and get the GW-5000u.
