Swamp Milkweed: Plant Care & Harvesting Seeds! Asclepias incarnata

  • My Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) plants are about 4 years old now, and they have allowed me to provide valuable nectar for pollinators. I see more biodiversity on these plants than anything else in my garden! Being this established they also produce a MASSIVE quantity of seeds which allows me to share! Every time I have a booth at an event you'll find me giving these seeds away! And last year I gave seeds to my trick-or-treaters at Halloween and it was a HUGE HIT! When the kids realized that they could grow flowers to help the butterflies their faces lit up like it was Christmas morning! So much better than candy!
This species of Milkweed is a wonderful addition to any garden! It does not spread by roots, so aside from blowing seeds it does stay where it's planted and behaves itself nicely.
If you found this video because I gave you a seed pack - thank you for watching and for caring about our pollinators! I hope you learn everything your need to know to successfully grow your new plants. Remember to subscribe for future videos about gardening and green businesses!
If you want seeds of your own, I recommend visiting:
    SaveOurMonarchs.org
to place and order and support their cause! They have a few different seeds and products available, as well as merch.
    FREE MILKWEEDS SEEDS!!!
I give away hundreds of seed packs every year, but I still have seeds I collected in 2022! And I harvested even more this year so I need to clear some out! Would you like a pack???
UPDATE!!!! You no longer need to send me an email, now just fill out a quick form on my website:
Yes, I'm doing this by hand, it's not automated, it's not a funnel and I will not share your info.
Let me know if you want multiple packs, but please limit it to one pack per household. There are usually at least 40 seeds in each pack so there are plenty to share, and in 2 years you'll have more seeds than you know what to do with - so you can share them even farther!
    Remember, all I'm asking is
🌸 1 - That you PLANT the seeds so they don't go to waste. Planting instructions are included as well as a QR code to my video about how to care for Swamp Milkweed.
🚫 2 - That you will NOT SPRAY any pesticides on or near these plants. The risk to monarchs and other pollinators (this plant attracts a LOT of different insects) is too great to justify the convenience of a pesticide.
▶️ 3 - That you SUBSCRIBE to my channel and enjoy my other videos. People often ask me if they can send me some money for the seeds or if they can send other seeds in exchange, and I so appreciate the generosity! But right now, my goals in doing this are simply to give these seeds away before they lose viability and to grow my channel. You will help me a lot by hitting the subscribe button and interacting with my channel. I wont bore you about the algorithm, but just know that every click, like, comment and subscription compounds and helps a channel grow. So that's the very best way that you can "pay me back" for the seeds.
***Must be in the contiguous 48 US states for this offer.
    More about Monarchs and Milkweed:
The last few years people have been getting serious about planting Milkweed - and it's working! The numbers are still fluctuating, but there have been a couple years with Monarch populations going up! Keep planting!
In future years I hope to be able to share different species of Milkweed, but for now I have Swamp Milkweed, Asclepias incarnata.
Here's my video on how to care for Swamp Milkweed:

more options for seed collecting: rubber band them before they pop open or put a nylon or sachet bag over the seed pods early to protect them from getting eaten and then harvest seed after plant starts to die back.

Those are really good ideas! I was thinking about putting mesh baggies over them last year but never got around to it. I like the rubber band idea, especially for the bigger pods like on Showy Milkweed.

Great meeting you at the Spokane community garden expo. Didn't get the swaml milkweed going this year but my poppy patch exploded and I've got a ton of seeds to give away.

Likewise! Thanks for following the videos!
If you are a more passive gardener like me then just throw the seeds at the ground before winter. Some will grow next spring. Your poppies sound gorgeous!

Interesting factoid about not blooming in first year. I planted one earlier this year, and it's flourishing but no blooms, but off to a good start nonetheless.

Yes! It'll focus on it's leaves this year and you'll see flowers next summer. You're doing it right!

I purchased what looks to be a tuber of Swamp Milkweed, I layed it down to plant it, dont know how long it will take to come to surface of soil.

    • @GardenUPLandscape
      @GardenUPLandscape  Před 10 měsíci

That doesn't seem right. Swamp Milkweed has very fibrous roots, I've never seen one with tubers. Common Milkweed has Rhizomes, but that is not a variety that you'd want in a typical garden as it spreads by those roots and is not well behaved at all. There's another variety called Asclepias tuberosa with bright orange flowers that is names for it's root system.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asclepias_tuberosa
So it's possible that what you purchased is a type of Milkweed, but not Swamp Milkweed. Seems a strange way to propagate though since the seeds germinate pretty easily and are very prolific this time of year. If you are in the US and want some Swamp Milkweed seeds I'll be happy to send you some. Just email me your address.
