Knife making - caveman styled fixed blade

  • I wanted to try and make a knife that looked like it was made from a piece of flint. Its made from o1 with my antiqued rad poisoning patina done on it 3 times over to give it a more warn rocky effect. Not sure if I'll do it again but it was definitely fun to muck around with

    So I've been making knives for a couple year's and have done some pretty nice knives. I've always fought getting the perfect bevel or the best finish. I finally decided that a hammered texture with an ok bevel looks good enough for me!

    When it was rusted in parts right after you put the random patterns in, it looks so cool like a rusty camo looking knife. The final look is beautiful great work you definitely got the flint look you were going for!

    • @armageddonknives
      @armageddonknives  Před 8 lety +3

      cheers, too bad the rust isn't on their well enough to work as a finish. after I did the pattern I wiped it down with some wd40 and it all came right off

  • @trevorschretlen3884
    @trevorschretlen3884 Před 7 lety +1

    Okay, just gonna put this out there even though I am realizing that you may have wanted a glass like blade (what for having it be more like a flint blade or something if that's what you were going for). If you're gonna work with a tool steel, you absolutely positively need to temper it after quenching or any kind of shock to the blade will snap it. Unless it is tempered, tool steel acts like glass and is very very brittle after being quenched. You did acknowledge this fact, but even with tempering, you wouldnt lose much of its edge retaining ability - in fact, you would probably prolong the life of the edge.

    • @armageddonknives
      @armageddonknives  Před 7 lety

      mate it is tempered, I just didn't film it

    • @trevorschretlen3884
      @trevorschretlen3884 Před 7 lety +1

      Okay, fair enough, that's good to hear. I have just seen too many friends try to make their "dream knife" out of a tool steel only to have it shatter on them.

    • @armageddonknives
      @armageddonknives  Před 7 lety

      haha yeah It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out why my blades broke so easy when I first started out

      @armageddonknives  Před 8 lety +1

      thanks for the kind words mate, I appreciate it. For a full size chef knife it would probably be around the 5-600 AUD mark depending what you want done

    • @peter4868
      @peter4868 Před 8 lety

      Mate I was thinking of some sort of higher level chiefs knife that could cut through the bench if dropped or pushed down with enough force. It might take a bit on the money wise, only a semi part timer so got some time from now. But yeah something like that mate would be great.

  • @ChrisR676

    Things I learned:
    •leave some meat, it does take a couple hours to correct a warp!
    •soak heat is intended for larger chunks of steel 👌🏽
    •that pattern after the grinding looked awesome like a camo print!
    Very cool to see a build video I will one day try this tool steel
