It is Back-to-School season, and some days you will wear your hair down in gorgeous curls... but it will get hot in Math class! All you have is an extra pencil. What can you do to cool down?
Create one of these Pencil Buns!
All you need is a pencil, and any one of these bun ideas will work perfectly! It will look super cute, too!
I prefer to have curls as the base on these, because the add texture helps the bun hold easier, but I created them on straight hair because I wanted you to see that they could be done.

I usually use like two pencils and shove the second in, for extra security once I've got the braid
My hair is super thick and curly, but the 1st one works enough if I put the pencil in the middle instead of the back of the bun, also I do buns on top of my head ONLY, so the first one works pretty well

So cool to see the variations. I had very long hair in high school and would do the first style all the time. I would use a pen instead of pencil though and put the pen cap back on once it was in my hair.
My hair is super thick and halfway down my chest, and i doubted that a single pencil would hold all of my hair. So i tried all 3, and i was REALLY impressed with the last two!!! I love #3 the most! It's the most secure, and it's super cute and stylish!!! Thank you so much, Mindy!!!! Now i've got a back-up for school!

I have done pencil buns before and sometimes I'd use colored pencils to match my outfit or just to add a little something to it.
I always do this in class. And once the day ends and I remove the chopstick, ta-da! Instant curls. And yes I'm Asian. :))

My scalp hurts so much and I've been doing the first and third one for 1 hour now because my hair keeps on falling :( I'm getting stressed out by doing the same steps repeatedly cause I desperately want to do these in class. Anyone help please? :'(
My hair doesn't hold up with one pencil so Inuse a few (2 or 3 usually) and they hold up all day. If you have it spraying some sea salt spray to add texture to your hair will help the bun to hold up easier. Just spray it in the morning snd go to school. Whenever you get hot, take out the pencils and voila! It should work.
It works just as fine without the sea salt spray by the way, it was just an extra tip :)

Hey CGH I tried this tutorial. I have extremely long hair. The first one didn't quite work for me (I probably did it wrong) but the other two worked great! So thanks! This will come in handy especially when I'm in chemistry and I forgot a hair tie on lab day. 😊

amazing tutorial!! never learnt to do a hair bun this quick in my life, I have curly hair so the hair never stays in place without scrunchies and even then it gives a funny flat dumpling shape, but this one, I tried the inverted pencil bun and it's staying perfectly. Thanks a lot!
I kinda combined the first one, and the last one. I started off with a bun, and stuck the pencil in from the side, but it drooped, so I flipped it, and I was so happy with the way it looks, and how simple it is
This will be helpful for all the times I forget an elastic when I go to school. I always try to keep an elastic in my bag but then when I use it, I forget to put one back in when I get home.

Yeah...all hair tutorials looks very very easy but ...it's impossible for me to do it..
dont do it on freshly washed or greasy hair. add some dry shampoo first

I love these! I tend to use mechanical pencils or pens because they don't poke or scratch my scalp! I'm going to try these now! My kindergarten room tends to get hot, these will help a great deal!

omg, I so used to do that 2nd one (inverted) on myself all the time... sometimes I used a pen instead of a pencil, though :D Great tips for those teens and college students who can do this on themselves when they just want their hair up (also good idea to keep some extra elastics in your locker, too :D )

I used to do these all the time in class... never really tried the third one but the first didn't work. I did the second one all the time, though! For some reason my BFF got really irritated when I did these. Also, try doing this with a capped pen! Works great.
Tip on getting the perfect pencil tip: I like to use the number two pencils that are painted black (better quality I think). I also like to use a good quality hand sharpener instead of an electric one. Great video!

I tried the 3rd bun because the other 2 didn't came out as good as the 3rd one and I love how it turned out.
I like these ideas, especially the third one. I have a very fine shoulder length hair and this one works perfectly! I always keep an elastic hair tie (the DIY no-snag stretchy tied hair elastics) on my wrist for ponytail situations. But the pencils are super cute!

On the second one i recommend twisting it only once no matter how long the hair (if you have waist long hair I'm sorry) it's much easier that way!!

It looks like you layered the front of your hair. Really pretty. I might try the 2nd one but my scalp is soooo tender....I'd also be wrapping about 4 times with my length. Nice though.

Ok I did all of them, first one okay but fell out second one pretty awesome, third one broke the hair stick is was using. I like the third one the best, it kinda falls out though so I used a hair tie to secure it a bit and poked out the pencil on the bottom so it didn't stab my head. It works pretty well
Have you tried the one where you hold it horizontal under your ponytail and wrap it around one end of the pencil then the other, then around the base of the ponytail under the pencil, then twist the pencil 360 degrees in the same direction and tuck each end of it under the hair at the top of your neck behind your ears to secure it in place?
I have looked for so long and have used so many different videos and this is the only video that has exactly worked for me!
I LOVE IT! It's easy and super quick! In my opinion I like all! But mostly, the second one. I actually did that in class when I had lost my elastic! I did it só quick that my teacher didn't even saw it! It's geneous!

Love it! I did the similar with fruit stick (aka BBQ stick) at office... Pencil, I find it a little difficult. I used disposable bamboo chopstick to do the same at restaurant when I don't hv my hair band or clip with me... Find it fruit stick is best for me. Hold it v v v long...

You should do a supreme frenche braid witch is when you take 3 sections of the hair and French braid the three and then you braid the dangling part of the braid and braid them together and wear a cute hair assesory!its a peace of cake

I have a christmassy idea for the last one: You could divide your hair into left and right and do one on each side, but use sticks that look like antlers instead of pencils, and then you've got reindeer antlers.
