    Honestly, wouldn’t it be easier to install an ip pbx with paging zones for the public areas and extensions with auto answer in the class rooms? You could announce the entire building or dial individual class rooms. Not to mention class room to class room. Subscribed!

      I considered that, but the audio quality with those did not satisfy me with most of those systems and with these schools it’s best to keep it simple! Thanks for your comment.

    I don’t know who makes the PA systems at my school district, but they all had a different tone when an announcement was made. My elementary school (originally built 1905, retrofitted and major expansions added in 2001) had around a 1khz tone like a curse word bleep, and the voice of the teachers was quite clear, loud, and had some bass. Based on the tone I’m guessing it was a Rauland system with unknown round baffle flush mount speakers, likely higher end Quam speakers based on the sound. My middle school (built 1966, never fully renovated but some updates were done) had around a 500hz “ping” sound, and the voice was tinny, quiet and crackly. I have no idea what this system was, but I think it had Quam surface mount slanted front wall speakers, which seemed to be okay sounding based on the “thump” at the end of the message. My high school (built 1902, retrofitted and expanded slightly in 2015) has a loud, long 500hz boooooop tone, and the voice is also quite low quality, but louder. Speakers appear to be assorted Quam products. Also, the speaker baffles in the classrooms have digital clocks! All the other schools had analog clocks.

      Fellow PA nerd! Based on what your saying that could be a DuKane starcall unit but I’m not 100 percent sure. The default bell tone is what you describe. Did the page tone sound like two chimes back to back?

    • @djijspeakerguy4628
      @djijspeakerguy4628 Před rokem +3

      @@dfd5858 I’m pretty sure the page tones were what I described.
      My elementary school had a bell tone for lunch and recess time which was around 7 dings, and the last ding didn’t fade out, it held for longer and cut off abruptly. It was a fairly quiet, pleasant tone, as was the page tone, which was about an octave higher than the usual tones I hear, around the pitch of the censor beep you hear on the radio, and very short. My middle school was old fashioned and had physical bells in the hallways, as well as buzzers behind the clocks in the classrooms. The clocks and bells were branded Simplex, and appeared to be original to the building. They were not, to my knowledge, hooked up to the PA system. The page tone there (the short “ping” sound) reminds me of the page tone I’ve heard in many Home Depot hardware stores. I’ve been in other district middle schools that still have the original clock system with real bells like this, and they’re sometimes also branded IBM but appear the same. My high school does not use a bell tone, instead relying on the teachers to page, or really make an announcement over the P.A. to let people know when the class changes are. The page tone is a longer steady “booooooooop” tone that really echoes through the halls.
      Also, a while back, I toured a recently remodeled middle school in the same district. Not sure what their bell tone was, but the page tone sounded like the “busy” signal on a phone!

  • @DiaconescuAlexandru2024
    @DiaconescuAlexandru2024 Před rokem +3

    The electrolytic capacitors in those amplifiers must be very happy from the blistering hot heat. I can see one of these amps failing from a dry capacitor between the stages or from a high-power transistor finally dying after being scorched for so long.

I've not seen it done with what looks like cat 3 or 5 cable only two wire powered copper at least here in the uk. Each twisted pair split off to different speakers i presume? kinda cool that you can route both phones music and announcements like this

      Probably because the zoned paging would short out and not page anywhere. The original installer (Hired on a schoolboard single source contract to a friend of a schoolboard trustee a a 50 years ago (1973?) ago) is long gone and so the janitor who knows how to replace fuses was told to fix it so we can make morning announcements! At least that's what I walked into at one site.

      @@dfd5858 I did not know the audio out on the Nortel was balanced. I always thought it was unbalanced, because of it being just a two wire setup. Also, is the phone system they're using a Nortel mics or something else? I think how the staff would page on the Nortel would be by using feature 62 or feature 630 for phones and speakers. Hopefully, a student doesn't find out how to use it.
