The best part of these books is they’re like “draw a chin, we aren’t gonna show you tricks on how, just do it”
IKR I never understood why you'd put the lines in after drawing the head... I gave up on the book almost immediately.
_DEADASS i always needed help understanding with that but had nobody to ask_
Lol true that
That’s like Instagram tutorials ! Draw a line , draw another line , now you have a castle , congratulations !
There’s one book, ‘Draw Manga: The Complete Skills’ by Sonia Leong (I think?) and it’s actually really helpful. It goes quite in-depth on how to draw proportions of the face and drawing those of various races, composition of manga panels, etc, and it’s got QR codes that link to videos for visual learners instead of step-by-step learners, it’s really good and I highly recommend it! (This is from personal experience, my partner got it for me on Valentine’s Day, and I can never thank them enough for how useful the book is 😅)
Even as a child I felt I was "above" these How To Draw Anime books and instead took references exclusively from Naruto and Bleach.
Ah, a man of class
Probably wise.
ah two of my most fav anime's that really got me invested other than inuyasha, was my first one i watched but didn't really get invested in it due to how young i was when it came out even naruto when it first came out fillers kinda killed it for me for awhile until 2017 of July when i gave it another chance just finished in August of last year that show was long but really good, bleach am waiting to get back into when ttybw arc gets animated
When I was little I stumbled across Rosario + vampire and being the innocent bean I was completely missed the sexual harem aspect of it. Just drew all the characters from it because I thought they were so pretty and wanted to be just like the loIi bc she was so smart she was in HIGH SCHOOL even though she was 12!!!!! Lmao
Since I was/am a furry I'd just trace over Pokémon or look up manga animals on dragoart.com lol
Gotta love it when the "tutorial" doesn't give details just like..
1. Draw a circle
2. Add details
3. Done!
If I were to give a tutorial:
This line
Then this line
This shape thingy
Triangle-ish curvy shape
Wavy time
LiNe
LiNe
More lines
This squiggle
Done!
If you can't draw a circle, just do the whole drawing first then start erasing!

I wouldn't say that for me specifically. Here are the biggest Fandoms I am in at the moment:
Pretty Cure (Japanese anime, biggest fandom)
Taylor Swift's Fandom (Real life person, middle fandom)
The Owl House (American animated TV show, last big fandom)
I don't want to Draw The Owl House a lot, and I cannot draw (a.k.a. trace and then show 6 people in detail about how it isn't my art) Taylor Swift without taking super long. Plus, Pretty Cure has so much fun with their designs! So for me, it's either Trace kinda terribly or draw in my Aristotle, which isn't anime but is also terrible.

S N to be fair, he has gotten a lot better. I have one of his newer books, ‘Drawing Anime - Amazing Girls’ and it has helped me develop my more anime-esque style (ignore the pfp lol, that’s an alt style of mine). I think he was just barely maturing in the ‘How to draw’ bit at the time of making the book, and possibly still a beginner at more anime styles at the time (which I can’t fault him for) and possibly just had more experience in western styles, hence why his newer work is much more advanced in terms of anime/manga styling lol

why sell a misleading book?
Perhaps they sold them to be purposely disproportional so that when a kid realizes “yo why my art look wack??” They just buy another book from the same company.
It was probably made to be a base for young artists to work with, but it ended up being worse quality than the emoji movie
Thats so ironic. I think its really supposed to be like coz if u look at distorted art, ur own art becomes less distorted lmao

Chris Hart’s drawing books are an absolute fail, even now. I remember reading a book he made on how to make and draw anime characters and it was honestly awful. For the school genre (which is really the only genre he properly touched on) he basically just gave you a set of cliche characters and acted as if that was a guide on how to create a school setting story. He also gave you a little thing for body proportions which was okay if it wasn’t literally just a template telling people to redraw the same body and face with nothing but height differences. It can be helpful to newer artists and definitely inspire some young artists into the world of oc making and creating stories it really isn’t good information especially for a £20/26$ book. I’m not sure about the other newer books, but I can’t imagine them being good.

I had a few different how to draw manga books as a kid, too - I've been wanting to revisit some of the old lessons, so I hope my Mom's kept them around somewhere. Here's hoping, lmao. This is awesome!
Damn, I remember when I was younger, in like 4 grade I was trying to learn how to draw and my mom got me a Christopher hart book. I treated this book like it was the Bible followed it to the end. Even though I think the book is terrible I still think it influenced my art a lot and I still use a couple of the techniques.
I think I know what one your talking about! I had it in 5th grade and it didn’t really help me at all. and it’s comng apart really easily for how much it cost
*I remember these- Everyone wanted one*
Ok I must know if the movie she watch was a portrait of a lady on fire
A movie set in France in the 1700???? That’s a portrait of a lady on fireeee. I need to see itttt
I think so! And you definitely should see it, I saw it just the other day and it was AMAZING
Amanda B. I would see it but I’m not old enough -^- I really want to see it xd
you guessed it!!!
@@LavenderTowne I knew it!
3:30 that’s jimmy neutron’s ancestor! Show her some respect!
Oh my god I have this book! It was the first how-to draw book I ever bought (I have many but I never use them lol). I used to look at the illustrations and tell myself “one day I’ll be this good”: I was like 10 so the drawings in the book were very fascinating to me and much higher than my level. I would say my drawing level’s increased a lot since then and I probably draw much better now but I felt very nostalgic when I saw this video since I remember using this book a lot when I was young XD
The nostalgia is coming back from when I started drawing, it’s awesome to know that someone else started from a tutorial book as well. I love your channel Lav, 💕💕
"in which case. Dang girl, that's a thicc head!"
😂🤣 I loved that part! ❤️
Also Lavender idk if you'll ever see this, But if you do. I just want you to know that you are one of my biggest inspirations! And every time I see you post a video of you drawing I get SUPER inspired!
YOU. ARE. ABSOLUTELY. AMAZING.
I remember buying that book when I was younger! The good old days lol.
Yes
I remember learning to draw using those old Christopher Hart books. I know the art style was already out of date when I was able to get ahold of the books, but I think the simplistic art was a pretty good place to start. I went from drawing stick people to drawing stick-shaped humanoids. :')
Why do I feel that Haley's voice is SOOOOO calming? I sound creepy, but when I watch her vids before bed, I sleep right away. It's just a nice sound to listen to. (This is so unrelated.)
I love how the princess ones head looks like an upside down egg
I think it was drawn by somebody who heard of the description "heart shaped face" and ran with it without double checking or thinking.
Chris Hart's later how to draw books are sooo much better, obviously. I love how even professional, published artists had to start somewhere and improve!
most of the art isn't his, it's drawn by other artists. He has improved, but a lot of the art in his later books are outsourced
All the beautiful actually competent art in his books are outsourced. Theres usually a credits list at the end detailing the artist and the page of the art...at least it used to be like that I havent touched one of these books since 2OO7
Yeah I have one of the 2018 books and judging from his youtube, none of the art is his. It's a good enough book tho
@@hhh-bu3qj oh wow! I had no idea. That's pretty disappointing!

This video reminded me why I love LT's videos--it's like each one is a trip down memory lane on how I (and perhaps most of us) started out drawing and the hobbies we had, like the text adventure games we played and the anime and shows we watched growing up.
3:26 That large hairstyle could actually have some historical roots in the wigs popular during renaissance/baroque era. You can see it in a lot of this in european fairy tale inspired movies, heck even Disney's Mallificent (when she was old/ was the antagonist) had this hairstyle. But maybe I'm overthinking this. I probably am.
i love how she laughs when she reads the weird patreon names :))
