It's not a strategy if it doesn't make any damn sense because believe it or not the middle seat in a plane is the least requested seat on a plane so people ain't going to be actively walking around looking to see if they can get into one
When flying southwest, and getting early boarding, hubby will sit in the window seat, and I in the isle. When someone politely asks is the middle is available, I reply with "if you don't mind me getting up every 5 minutes so I can to go to the toilet, you can have the isle seat" they turn out to be the best seat mates!

@DerNunu now the company on purpose doesn't seat your children with you to have you pay select seat. I don't mind to seat the last row but when I buy ticket together with my young children I expect them to be seat with me otherwise that the company issues. Like I told them you bothering the other passengers, who want to seat next a 3y/o. I don't feel confortable to ask a passenger to change his seat what if he pay for. I feel the airline should automatically seat under 12 with parents that just logical as it was before.
