- Our August 25th, 2017 ascent of 14,130' Capitol Peak, Colorado's most challenging 14er, near Aspen & Snowmass in Colorado.
Five climbers died this year attempting to climb Capitol Peak, most of whom attempted to choose their own route down from the summit and got cliffed out on the north face. Don't do that. STAY ON ROUTE, start early (3-4am) and respect the mercurial mountain weather. - Sport
Man I would be double checking every hand and foot hold on the way up that 😂 Some experiences I'm ok with missing out on, but I'm glad you and your crew made it safely! Awesome accomplishment
Love the video; would rather hear your comments than any music
That face up to the summit looks SCRAY man. And I thought I just had to be worried about the route finding and the knife edge(s). Ugh. Maybe after a lot more training with exposure. Well done boys.
I will never be able to do this, But I feel as tho I've gotten as close as I can get. Thank You.
This hits home for us and makes everything worthwhile - thank you so much!
That’s sick. On my bucket list for sure.
Amazing video! I recently did a similar hike on Stegosaurus+Sawtooth Ridge in Taiwan. This one feels like a major step-up.
A woman died here just this week. This is serious climbing and requires serious planning. Have fun and be safe out there.
great footage!
entropyhappens thanks!
So you just decided to make the end harder?
Hey man! How do you know the best path to take during those scrambles?
14ers.com is the best place to start! But definitely do your homework on knowing the route and starting early (like 3am with headlamps lol). We save photos and text descriptions to our phones, absolute must.
@@SAVAGEMediaGroup at night!! WOW!!! I am just amazed at the bravery ad amazing talent and spirit of anyone that tries this!!! WOWWWWWW!
My feet and legs get weak when I'm 20 feet away from the south rim of the Grand Canyon. I just have this vision of the entire shelf of rock I'm standing on breaking off and falling like giant surfboard into the canyon.
I love this. I wish we had a drone to start practicing. I would love to add these views. If you're interested in South America come and visit us. but we are all land only!!!
Awesome stuff
So crazy to think this was filmed right after and right before some very tragic deaths there 😢
Indeed :( it sucks. How do you go someplace that takes everything from others? Personal challenge. Personal choice. You can't help but say be safe and make good decisions. Sometimes life is dice roll.
try matthes crest in the sierras if you like knife edge climbs
A few weeks away. I cannot wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stay safe, start early and best of luck ☺️🙌.
Be safe, a guy died on the Knife Edge section last week.
Hey everybody I plan on doing knifes edge/capital peak in August and I have a question if somebody would answer I would be grateful. I’m not worried about the edge but I do keep hearing that route finding is very difficult. Are there no cairns? From the trail head to the lake is that well marked or is it more from the lake going up that’s difficult and why?
Sup Tony, Justin here, I made this video. The difficulties you hear about with route finding come after the knife edge, but do not underestimate getting around K2. Steep loose slabs of rock and very exposed moves. Capitol Peak was my 12th 14er and even then this kind of climb is NOT for everyone/anyone. In fact, I'd say climbing Capitol is NOT for most people.
Let me explain:
The knife edge by itself isn't too bad, but the context here is everything. The level of commitment on this mountain is VERY high. Look carefully at the route map and understand that you will be above treeline and on exposed / sketchy terrain for the entire climb, and after you summit, you have a solid 2-3 hours of return climbing to get back to camp. There is 0 cover from lightning until you are back to camp. Almost all the people you hear about dying on this mountain ended up in the same situation and made the same mistake: they started too late or went too slow or had bad luck with an early storm, and they decided to descend straight down the face instead of re-crossing the knife edge and going back the way they came (the only safe way to go on this mountain).
Two people unfortunately died this way two days before we backpacked in, and the helicopter taking the bodies off of the face flew past us on the way out. We passed an abandoned pair of trekking poles and a hat at K2 (very somber moment). We were sad to hear that another person had a fatal accident a few days after we summited. In both cases and several others I read about, these people were LATE getting to the summit, weather came in and they tried to retreat straight down the face instead of re-crossing the knife edge, going back around K2, descending the east side from the ridge, going back across the long boulder field, and re-climbing back up to the ridge and down to camp. Attempting to descend from the summit down the face instead of crossing the knife edge is guaranteed death. From the top it looks doable, but the rock is slabby, hollow and gets vertical quickly and will peel off the side of the mountain.
Only you know your comfort level / sure-footedness at elevation with exposure, but I can confirm it's loose rock up there toward the summit and the steepness and jaggedness of the terrain makes it hard to find an identifiable "path" to the top. Being in a time crunch compounds this issue. When route finding, try and be aware of overhead rockfall potential and you need to spot the point at which you need to gain the summit ridge, and pick the best path to get there. There are definitely some exposed/nearly vertical sections. Be safe.
PS thank you for not complaining about the music 🤣
Hey Justin, thank you very much for your response. It was everything I needed to know and more and very detailed. Thank you so much! I look forward to giving this bad boy a try! What’s a good starting time if you are a halfway decent hiker? I keep hearing people leaving at 3 AM from camp by the lake.
And it could have been an opera singer singing completely out of key and it wouldn’t of mattered. The views from the video are spectacular and much appreciated. Thank you.
@@tonyc2570 love it. Best of luck with clear weather. I want to say we woke up at 3 and left camp around 4am? Probably best to be summiting around 9/10 instead of the usual 11am ish summit time for less committal summits, if I had to put numbers to it.
Are they free climbing??? Like no wires?? WOWZA if so!! Wha a rush!!
Sooo...how do you get down?
The same way you got up there, no exceptions! Trip reports at 14ers.com :)
I’m considering doing this hike this summer. I’m not an avid hiker in the least but have completed difficult 15 mile hikes. Do you recommend this hike for someone like me or for someone a little more advanced?
Be careful. Someone I know died on Knife Edge.
Capitol Peak should be considered a climb and not a hike, and people do die on these mountains every year. That being said, only you know your ability level. I would suggest doing other Class 3/4 14ers in Colorado so that you know your comfort level on very exposed and/or loose rock before taking on Capitol as it is one of the most exposed/difficult ones in the state.
Great send of a 14,000 ft pile of choss! Super sketchy!
what are these people? spider sticks? as if they don't disturb the rubble T_T
At 1:49 the middle rock looks like a face!
After so many hours they all do lol.
I'm ok not doing this 😅. Longs peak keyhole route and sawtooth was enough for my comfort level.
That rock is unstable and unsafe. you got your video this time.
Asuh dude whats goodie
Eff that! I’ll stick to Mt Elbert making me look stooopid. Thats way too dangerous.
Awesome video!! Can't wait for my turn next month!! 🏔
Naa i'm all set
I had a mini heart attack watching this. How is it?
Hah, warranted. It's a definite challenge and only for the sure-footed, but if you start early, know the route and have done some other exposed class 3 climbing you might be up for the challenge. Stay safe out there!
@@SAVAGEMediaGroup it looks like a straight drop on eitger sideof knifes edge. And people are walking across that?
@@Maxmilion6004 The GoPro wide angle admittedly makes it look steeper than it is, but it's definitely steep. Most people (including us) butt-scoot their way across it, walking/crawling a few wider sections.
@@SAVAGEMediaGroup ahh good to know that footage was pretty awesome tho!
@@Maxmilion6004 Thanks! 💯
the 5th person fell the next day after this vid, attempting the "shortcut." I've done Capitol more than 5 times, there are NO shortcuts! After 2017 2 more climbers have fallen to their deaths. If you do go to Capitol, be prepared and be safe! The summit is not worth it if you don't come back alive.
I heard Pyramid Peak is the most difficult...
I found Capitol to be far more challenging than Pyramid
This is interesting. I found Capitol safer and easier (but by no means was it easy) Where pyramid you have to down climb sketchy ass rock. I thought pyramid was harder.
Music sux
Thanks for sharing your opinion 😂.
Music and rapidly shifting camera angles - no thanks
yikes
First off..........forget the music or pick something that isn't so distracting!
Nope
Very cool. Music sucks tho
Very disorienting rapid cuts
What a goofy video. Cameras on their heads swinging left then right....
Great video, awful music. muted it
Thank you for that insight, Jeff. In the future, what song would you choose?
I would prefer no music honestly, just the sounds of nature and the ambience of the experience of being there.
😂😂😂 song is awesome big wild for the win. Dope video too
agree
@@SAVAGEMediaGroup no music
Music is bad.................great footage though
Peggy Knight fuck u big wild slaps
Wtf is wrong with people
Another one bites the dust: Denver woman falls 900 feet to her death while climbing Capitol Peak this Saturday.
In 2021, authorities made the decision to leave a hiker's body on the mountain after a rescuer was seriously injured trying to recover the body.
Five climbers died climbing Capitol Peak in the span of a six-week period in 2017.
You really shouldn’t say “Another one bites the dust.” It’s very disrespectful to the family who just hours ago, tragically lost their loved one.
Sad, but still safer than driving a car.
Terrible editing. JFC. Stick with a frame for more than 3 seconds before you switch it to the next one. Unwatchable.
Colorado's lack of glacier/snow makes these sorts of climbs more like jungle gym climb. No real technical skills required
Have you climbed it? If it weren't for the dead loose rock I would agree, though the distance and planning/experience required definitely makes this one dangerous for anyone who doesn't have a lot of experience. Three people died the week we climbed it, but of course there are more technically complex climbs out there.
they haven't climbed it. keyboard warriors who would most likely crumble up there.@@SAVAGEMediaGroup
