  • Most people buy and grow willow to become a large tree. But willows can also be grown to produce a cash crop of raw material for decorative arrangements, basketry, furniture, and even products like tree and garden stakes. Whether you are selling ornamental plant selections at the farmers market or looking for the easiest ways to make money through native plant propagation, growing willows for production is important knowledge to have.

I don't feel like pollarding a willow to 2-3 feet would keep it above deer browsing height. I would recommendmore like 8 feet if deer are a serious issue (like they are where I live).

Good point. Thanks. Pollarding can be any height but should be higher if it's specifically for deer protection. Another thing we didn't mention is rutting. Deer can really abuse a young coppiced tree by rubbing the trunk with their antlers.

There are way too many 'common' names used for willow, and it gets really confusing when trying to purchase cuttings from a nursery just to get a fast growing, tall hedge or natural privacy fence. Basket Willow, Sandbar Willow, Biomass Willow, Hybrid Willow, Energy Willow... why make it so confusing?

I agree. Also, many willows can serve dual purposes so some willow can be in almost all of those categories. But I do think those categories might be useful for people starting out. With so many willows choose from, it can be hard to figure out where to begin. - Mark
