Desensitizing does work, but I still can't believe I did it by myself at the age of eleven. I had a horrible fear of spiders and I got completely fed up with my brother amusing himself by deliberately talking about them in my presence just to get a reaction. I kept looking at pictures of spiders in the encyclopedia until I could tolerate reading about them. They're actually very interesting.

I made myself watch documentaries about tarantulas and going to pet stores to look at them. I am still not keen on spiders but my fear is nothing like it used to be. It's funny because I am not afraid of snakes or anything like that.
While desentizing can be very successful, you have to be careful! Because forcing someone to confront something that they are truly afraid of can actually cause serious physical and psychological trauma, if not done correctly!
I love how slowly he got him used to the water. When I was 12 I was trying to hold my breath and swim the length of the pool under water. I tried and tried. Finally I just went for it. My lungs felt like they were going to burst! And when I felt the pool wall and went to take a breath....my dad held my head under water! 😳 Then he got mad at ME for panicking. I hate swimming now.

Was that his high school coach? There are many good coaches & teachers and as much as they desire to help students, there is no time. Troublesome teens, understaffing, endless problems. Think of the different world this might be if we, as parents, were taught the lessons in these videos!!!

This is a great way to develop PTSD you know. Fear should be treated by proffecionals only, and means performing certain exercises that aleviate stress. There is also breathing techniques accepting the fear. Don't jump into the water untill you are shure you can handle it. (I once tried joining the millitary, it scared me such that I would pass out at random. This lead to the discovery of childhood trauma, which I am curing right now)

That bike ordinance doesn't make much sense to me. It's a lot more dangerous for a cyclist to be hit by a car than it is for a pedestrian on a sidewalk to be hit by a bike, and the former is far more likely than the latter as well.
My mother was hit by a bicyclist, she was taken to emergency, they thought by her injuries she has been hit by a motorcycle. She lost her eyesight for about 12 hours and other injuries. Fortunately she recovered but before that day I never thought being hit by a bicycle could do so much damage. There should be special lanes for bicycles because it is dangerous cycling on the road.
Bicycles skateboards scooters should not be on footpaths it's to dangerous for Pedestrians Keep them on the roads Pedestrians need walking space that's safe

Miriam Bucholtz yeah, i used to be terrified of spiders too. Now I can pick certain spiders up with my hand to put them outside.

The best way to get over fear of the water is to wait until the pool is drained, then dive in. Suddenly the water won't seem so scary.
