Suck at Cel Animation? Try this!

  • Here is an easy trick for hacking professional frame by frame animation. (also known as cel animation) I'll show you how to utilize After Effects and your iPad Pro to make your process of hand drawn animation easier.
    Cel animation can be intimidating! If you've ever attempted to take the plunge into traditional hand-drawn animation, you know how difficult it can be. When I first started dipping my toes into the traditional animation world, drawing every frame by frame, I struggled with slow in/slow out and timing ( the number of frames an action should take.)
    It just wasn't as intuitive as the graph editor in Adobe After Effects. So I developed my own workflow that allows me to take advantage of the graph editor in After Effects to guide me in my traditional animations in Rough Animator.
    That way when I am drawing frame by frame, I'm reducing the amount of brainpower. All I have to do is focus on the drawing, and After Effects takes care of the spacing and easing. Doing things this way has opened up the possibility of many more dynamic 2D animations.
    In this video, I use Rough Animator which is an App you can get on the iPad Pro. However, this workflow will work with any animation software that can import video and export PNG sequences.
    Like the music? I use soundstripe for all my music. It's affordable, and they have a really great library. You can view all the music at this link. If you like what you hear, consider trying them out! soundstripe.com?fpr=keyframeacademy

    I come from the photography/video/photoshop world and know far less about illustrator and working with paths and shapes than I'd like, and this really helps to demystify the whole thing!

    I’ve come from a traditional art background and have done hand animation before, but it’s a frustrating pain… I also know illustrator too and do design stuff for a living, but my experience with animation in the past scarred me and we didn’t have animate either. In fact, I was in school when flash died, but animate wasn’t a thing yet so we used other tedious software I didn’t like.
    I appreciate this video, there’s nothing wrong with using this to be more efficient because when you have deadlines drawing by hand isn’t it lol. I’ve been trying to understand how to make that swooping ink blob design I see everywhere now (it’s in your intro too), so this is the perfect video lol. I assumed it was handmade stuff, but it seems it’s much simpler!

    The video quality overall is amazing, just a little tip, the background music is a little too loud sometimes, making it harder to hear you.
    Keep up the good work!

    I have a question, are you using ipad 11 or 12.9 inch? Which is better for animation and design/drawing work in your opinion?
    If you're using the 12.9 one, do you have any issues with portability?

    • @TheKeyframeAcademy
      @TheKeyframeAcademy  Před rokem

      I personally have the 12.9 inch one, but my wife has the 11 inch and it's not bad. I don't have portability issues witht he 12.9 inch.

      @@TheKeyframeAcademy thanks for the suggestions, meant in the traditional sense, not tweens..still..I find the bones in AE to be slow and cumbersome, maybe I'll find some tutorials that show me otherwise.
