  • A gem of a find, the story of Paul Bryant(The Bear), a record breaking Alabama college American Football coach. I am a avid movie fan and I have looked for movies for many years, but this is the first time I had ever heard of, or seen this film. In fairly good quality, it also has another favourite of mine Harry Dean Stanton, but he and Jon Eric Hexum are not in it very long, at almost 2 hours, its not a short film and I am no American Football fan as such, but I enjoyed it and watched it till the end. It does take about 20 seconds to start, so dont panic about the blank screen at the beginning. This film is not available anywhere, so I thought I owed it to all the Gary Busey and football fans alike to share this rare film, so its not forgotten!

    I wanted to see this movie as a kid when it came out but never got to. I read the book in HS my senior year. Now 49 I finally got to see the movie. I was in the second grade when Bear passed away. I remember crying because I was supposed to play for him when I was older. My granddad took me to my first Bama game a year or two after his passing at Birmingham’s Legion Field, 8 saw Walter Lewis, Joey Jones and Ricky Moore play in a tornado vs LSU. Sadly Bama lost that game. Many more I’ve seen since then. While recruited as a DT I never went to college due to bad grades and being 19 as a senior. But I’ve been with Bama through the good and the bad. I saw Bear win 2 National Championship’s in the 70’s, and then Stallings who was there when I graduated HS. Saban just kept the winning tradition going in Tuscaloosa. If I never witness another one, I’ve been blessed to be a Bama fan and witness 3 great coaches in my life time. RollTide!!!

      Thanks, I was unaware of Paul Bryant before this movie, as I live in the UK, but its the best quality version I could find anywhere. I was lucky to pick up a DVD from a friend, glad you like it, I am a big Gary Busey fan, he reminds me a bit of Nick Nolte in his approach and style, I like them both, but they do have a limited range.I was not sure how popular this post would be, but The Bear seems to be respected by most Americans I know for what he did for college football. I am a massive TV and movie nut, perhaps it karma, but I found a old BBC childrens TV show I have been after for many years, immediately after I posted this, " break point". Not the best TV show ever, but it has always annoyed me, that I did not see the last one till now, its never been released on DVD or VHS, so I had almost given up on ever seeing the last episode, youtube is a wonderful way of sharing what you have with like minded people.

    My cousin was Billy Neighbors and at the point in the film that is Billy's son Wes playing the part of his dad And you can hear him say ''Neighbors,is that how you play defence''. Now the interesting trivia is during filming Wes was not hitting the stuntman hard enough and he pulled Wes to the side and explained he can take it. The next take Wes hit the stuntman so hard it broke
    his ankle in 2 places czcams.com/video/Hsf0t8xMAnc/video.htmlsi=eG6lbtMKZ3Wy0Neo

    I watched an interview today done back in the 80s by Regis Philbin of Jon-Eric HEXUM who played Pat Trammel in this movie. Hexum described doing a scene when Pat was in the hospital and Bear came to see him. I don’t see this scene in the version of the movie. Logical assumption is that it got cut before publishing the movie. Anybody know if that is true or did it just get left off this version? Just curious.

    When Bear Bryant was the coach at Alabama, I remember hearing many people say that he and John Wayne looked alike. And this is ironic, because there was a quote in one of Mr. Wayne's greatest movies, "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence". The quote is, "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." Or, in this case, portray the legend. I saw this movie when it first came out, but after watching it again, I noticed that there were a few minor things that were not exactly accurate. But who cares? This is a very entertaining movie, and Gary Busey was brilliant. Also, I remember, when it was released, the Alabama 'good old boy' network didn't like the movie, thinking it made the coach look bad, and had it banned. I don't see this. I remember Bear Bryant very well. If the facts had been portrayed instead of the legend, the Alabama faithful really wouldn't have liked it. But I do think this is a good movie.

      @MrRondonmon Před 9 dny

      The acting wasn't awful per se, the script was, you do not show a movie about a man and 85 percent of it is football. They made it on the cheap, 267 K and made 2.6 million. Before it was pulled, they knew they could get a cheap, movie out and make money. Like Rocky is about LIFE in general, thats what this movie should have been, really bad script.
