It wants a mournful howl I was tracking. A wail that permeated even the darkest of nights. It rang through the trees, an echo sharing it's woes. It was the pain in it that spurred me on, that made my heart move with the same urgency as my feet. These dense woods were my home, yet my home wasn't always welcoming to the unwary. So I trot quickly but with caution, my lantern bright and unwavering against that lurking obsidian curtain. A crunch to my right startled me and I froze as easily as the blood in my veins. I adjusted the lantern as the glow fell on startlingly bright eyes only a foot off the ground. It's tufty grey fur covered it's entire small body and it twitched nervously at the sight of me. Kneeling ever so slowly I whispered "Where's your momma Rufus?" The question was quite unnecessary as Rufus just stared at me with quizzical eyes. Suddenly he darted into the woods in the direction of the echoing howls. With a small smile I followed the little wolf in pursuit of his mother. I recognized that howl as Lyla's, having raised her from a pup it had been seared upon my memory. As the pained howl grew nearer that sense of unease grew in my chest, Lyla was in pain.
My lantern shone the way through the sense trees, crickets washed me in their soft symphony. Only when the howling was ear piercing did I realize what had happened. My lantern found darkness it could not penetrate, an immense hole. With a quick breath to fortify my resolve, I descended by the rope I'd tied slowly so as to not meet the same date as Lyla. Only stumbling once and breathing through clenched teeth I made it to the bottom and saw to my relief a mostly unharmed Lyla. She was breathing heavily and pacing the hole. Her immense body took up most of the room in the small crevice. There was blood slowly trickling from a small gash on her paw. "Hey there, it's been awhile," I said with a warm smile as she nuzzled my arm with her immense snout. I wrapped her wound efficiently and cleanly before heaving us both out of the hole very painstakingly. With grace I couldn't muster she leapt the rest of the way out and darted into the woods her little cub in pursuit. Just before he reached the edge of my view he looked at me once more with those bright blue eyes then turned and ran after his mother. "Good night Rufus," I said softly.
That was excellent.
"Listen to them...the Children of the Night! What music they make!"

Funny. In the book I'm writing there is a huge forest, inhabited by half-humans, half-wolf, and this ambience fits like a glove. Just like I imagined it. Nice work, very good ambience.

Wolves dont actually howl more during the full moon, so if you were to hear a wolf howling during the full moon its not related to the full moon at all

Came across this earler , i sat in my back garden on my favourite chair around 11.15pm and put this on , the garden was in dark apart from having my low twinkly lights on in my gazebo and i decided to just have one small candle burning under my gazebo on table -- I FELL ASLEEP SAT UP IN MY CHAIR LOL it was prob only for 5 mins BUT thats cause my cat jumpt on my lap and woke me up , WAW THIS IS AMAZING

Fun fact: Though wolves have rivals, other predators will usually go out of they're way to avoid a wolf packs territory.

Hi I know this was 2 years ago at this point but I would really love something just like this but with the howls of a red wolf
We used to have coyotes howl in the mountains by my house back then and it made me fall asleep like baby. Now, there’s super rich house on those mountains and all the coyotes have been relocated or the population has decreased
