Just how powerful can we make a Lego air gun using standard Lego pneumatic parts? I’ll use this gun to shoot Lego axles and some homemade darts, blasting anything I can get my hands on (including the walls of my apartment).
If you’re interested in making your own, I hope this video will help to give you some ideas. The key seems to be forcing air as quickly as you can through a barrel - even if it’s only a small amount.
Please let me know if you have any other ideas to make it more powerful!

You have to make a V2 out of this!!!
I certainly will - already got some ideas for motorised compressor, auto-reloading, and maybe thicker tubing
@@JamiesBrickJams can't wait for that!
Meybe with a better valve
@@lemoncheesecake4880yeah I think you can modify the valves to get more airflow, but crimping will probably always work better than modified Lego valves
nice to see you there lol
When you build yourself a weapon out of stuff you find in your cell, after being thrown into Lego prison for illegal building techniques.
If that's a crime I'm gonna be in this cell for a while 😬
I love the build! It almost feels like a Lego crossbow would work just as well if not better, at least with the current tank capacity.
Keep em coming!
Thanks! Yeah, crossbows are definitely more powerful - got a few lying around I might make a video of. But there's something really satisfying about pneumatics! Gonna try using more tanks and wider hosing to see if I can squeeze some more power out of it
The term "banana cannon" has now entered my lexicon. Thank you.
I hope you get to use it often 😂
Lego crime
Does maiming technic men count? Maybe it's time to build a Lego bank
@@JamiesBrickJams absolutely
"Willing volunteers" aren't civilians.
@@samuelloomis9714I'm sure I can find some unwilling ones
You should make it into a sniper so that you can have much more space to house extra components like a auto reload, a much more powerful tank, a motor that can fill the tank by it self, and a magazine.
Working on it right now 😉 so far it's got a laser sight, onboard compressor, dual tanks, and shoots much further. Got some ball bearings on order to see if it can shoot them too 😁. The auto reloading and crimping is proving to be the real issue though...
This is a gorgeous application of LEGO technic. I applaud you on all points, sir!
Appreciate it a lot, cheers! 😁🙏
this version has a lot to improve, especially the air locking system, try making shell type system and magazine.
I would recommend better airtank system, it should have main tank and shooting tank(can be pneumatic pipe), reload valve(switch), and shooting valve(as in your version of your airgun) main tank should be bigger than shooting tank.
principle of new airtank system: reload valve is opened and some ammount of air from main tank is transfered to shooting tank, than reload valve is closed and now airgun is ready to shoot (assuming that gun is loaded), now you can open shooting valve (make a shot)
main advantage of this system is you can shoot several rounds before repumping the system, and if you will make your rifle mag-fed it will be almost semiauto!
(if you didnt understand something please ask)
Those are some fantastic suggestions, thanks for sharing! I love the idea of a storage main tank and a firing tank. I'm guessing the main tank would have to be kept at a higher pressure than the firing tank? So then when transferring to the firing tank you could have several shots at full power before it starts dropping. Great idea having a reloading valve - that I can certainly do. Would love to find a way to make the reloading quicker too. Cheers for the tips! 🙏
@@JamiesBrickJams you got everything right 😎👍 im glad my advice is helpful 😁
You really deserve more subs, your channel is great
Thanks, really appreciate it 😁🙏
Add a bolt action that actuates the pump and recharges the cannister for the next shot! (Actually it'd be really cool if it also reloaded since it seems like the the design would already be pretty breech-load compatible, probably the hardest part would just be getting the tubing to be automatically re-crimpable)
Ooooh that's not a bad idea.. I'd likely need a lot of compressors to compress enough air in a single stroke to power it, but it might be possible (like those old crossbows that have a large lever). Auto reloading and re-crimping isn't actually too challenging - my original design used a re-crimping setup! Cheers for the ideas, I'll certainly play around with them 😁
Loving the vids, keep it up!
Thanks a lot! And will do 😁
nice, i love your content
Thanks man! 🙏
Well done bro! You are the reason I got back into lego😊
Aw thanks a lot! That's awesome to hear - my goal with these experiments is really just to give some Lego ideas that are relatively simple to replicate over a weekend. Delighted you got back into it 😁
I've had store bought speakers that sounded worse haha. Good work!
Ha thanks man. I'm guessing your comment is for one of my speaker videos.. cause if this gun sounds better than your speaker, that's gotta be a damn awful speaker 😂
@@JamiesBrickJams haha, yeah. Not sure how that happened 🤦♂️
It is a perfect balance between engineering and good fun
Thanks a lot, appreciate it ☺️ And yeah it's reasonably harmless, but just powerful enough for it to be fun to plink with in a small apartment!
the banana bullets are perfect for airsoft because they are biodegradable. and if you want a shotgun load in multiple of them at once in the barrel. 👍👍👍
Haha actually frozen banana might not be the worst ammunition 😂

i love seeing new videos with pneumatics sad to see how it never gained traction imo
It's a real pity yeah, pneumatics are so satisfying to use!
@@JamiesBrickJams wow you replied was not expecting that but ya pneumatics just make me sad on how i have a 1984 set that’s so awesome for its time and never even became a wide spread part and feels like a small community that’s been very closed off.
Also i subbed seems like more awsome stuff may be coming haha
Aw thanks a lot for joining! And you're totally right, those old sets were fantastic. I'm happy they're still making occasional sets with them, but they feel like a bit of an afterthought. Would love them to release something useful like a pneumatic engine :D
yep the old sets still have cool designs to them atleast
shrapnel with his lego minigun: WELL SEE, THATS A BIT
not long ago I made a lego sling shot the could shot arrows, it would probably be deadly if you use it right and I could hit a target from a good distance to.
That's awesome, well done! I love a good slingshot. Got a few Lego ones lying around I might do a video on. What kind of bolts were you shooting?
Just use a modified valve from green gecko workshop, they have modified Lego pneumatics.
Absolutely love green gecko's models and work! However even those valves won't open quick enough for the powerful burst this needs. Good suggestion tho!
Really good video as always, i do have a question about 3:08 the handle is at an angle which normally isn’t possible with 2 parallel lift arms like that without bending them slightly, and the left one doesn’t look like a normal Lego lift arm, is it some sort of silicone part or something?
Oh yeah that one liftarm is a knock-off as I ran out of them, but everything else is stock. And that angle is all done using stock Lego parts. If you look at the liftarms holding it in place, you'll see one side is offset by a single hole. I discovered it by accident when I stuck the pin in the wrong hole 😅 Give it a try if you have the pieces!
@@JamiesBrickJams ohh ok, I didn’t think that would actually fit normally but it does, I do think it puts stress on the pins though, because when turning it shifts off the stud grid by a millimeter or so, so it might be an illegal building technique
@@poemes hmm it doesn't feel like it puts any extra strain on anything.. but I guess out of all the things I put Lego through, a little illegal building here and there is the least egregious

Nice bro, few questions for u
How long does it shoot? (What’s the range of your weapon?
Can it completed destroy a Lego target?
How much air is used?
How the mechanism works
This creation is truly amazing. Good work :)
Thanks man, appreciate it! Well it's Lego, so it's pretty limited by the nature of it being plastic and leaky. But considering it's Lego I was very impressed. Max range with a needle dart was around 8 meters (26 feet), but the axle with Teflon tape actually got much further. I don't know the max as my apartment is pretty small, but it can do the entire length of the apartment (about 8 meters) without dropping much. It uses the small blue air tank as the reservoir, and the mechanism is explained in the video - just a crimped pipe holding the air in until it is de-crimped. The next version will experiment with more tanks, thicker tubing, and perhaps motorised compression.
Amazing! Also, where did you bought pneumatic lego?
Thanks! To be honest, many of my pieces are very old from sets from when I was a teenager. But the piping is just simple silicone food tubing from Amazon.
Just have the air release extremely quickly. Also try to make all the air come out at the same time.
Sure do, that's really the key here - just how quickly can we release the air? I'm working on an upgraded quick-reloading release which will hopefully improve it a little (along with a bunch of other upgrades)
Fire glitter out of it.
Awesome idea... one second of fun, and a lifetime of cleaning 😅
Nice 😀 build something similar with a metallic pneumatics tank created by my father on his lathe 25 years ago. Combined with radio controls and servos from an old RC-car I created a nice metal needle firing lego technic tank (which was unfortunately taken away from me some days later by my mother 😕) Something that can be thought will be thought again.
Damn that's incredible! Well done man, that sounds fascinating. Love the idea of using some higher powered tanks inside of a Lego build. Well something like this model can't hold a candle to that, but it's always a simple option if you want a taste of the old days 😜
He could add 2 pressure tanks to increase the e power
That's exactly my plan 😉 Got them already, and also trying some slightly thicker pipe to increase airflow
Saying your home dose not need defending is like saying I wanna get killed in my sleep. All homes need defending! Up the anti!
Should have paid someone to break in to test it out...
A possible alternative to crimping the hose: try modifying your switches to accept more airflow. Good video though!
I actually tried that. It does let through a lot more, but unfortunately it's still way too slow. Turning the valve switch isn't quick enough, and tends to result in more of a 'woosh' of air rather than a pop. The new version has a much better crimp mechanism though!
Small paint pellets and make abstract art that sells for pennies.
Oooh I like the idea of paint pellets
Where did you get your pneumatic pieces? I can’t seem to find any at a decent price.
Yeah pneumatic components are just ridiculous, especially the tanks. This tank is about 25 years old though, so it's free! Otherwise bricklink is likely your best bet. The hosing I'm using is just standard 2x4mm silicone food hosing, which is super cheap on amazon
What is the code of the Blue bottle of air ??
in my headcanon, this is called the LMR
the Lego Marksman Rifle
And now it is for me too 😁
You could use it to carbonate a drink if you use co2 instead of air 😂
hehe, I know that guy with the goggles, blue sleeves, and blue pants. Chopper Force!
Haha how right you are, well spotted 😁
@@JamiesBrickJams He is sitting in my power puller right now.
You mean the projectile is the aglet?
I’m pretty sure people have said it before, but this guy is literally living our childhood dreams of making whatever we wanted out of Lego. We used to think as kids that we could build a time machine out of Lego and just ended up with some weird blob 😂
Hey if it brings you back to your childhood that's a sort of time machine 😉
WHY DOES THIS NOT HAVE 1 MILLION VIEWS 😭😭😭
Haha well that's a hell of a compliment, cheers 😁
Question: is it possible to add a magazine without leaking problems?
Good question! I've been playing with various mechanisms, and it's really challenging. It's definitely doable, but the rounds tend to get stuck when trying to put them into the tube. Sealing it (loosely) is ok with the rubber piece I'm using in this build. So I think it's possible, but it's gonna take a while 😅
And next that you know is LEGO being forbidden from boarding on to a plane. Thank you!
You're welcome 😁
To be honest, you'd need alcohol combustion (basically do an alcohol gun) to make this the best it can, as lego air pressure is really minimal
That's a cool idea.. I've never heard of an alcohol gun, though I'd imagine it's like a spud gun using butane? I do have another similar idea that vaporizes aluminium foil using high voltage to produce propellant.. will see what's possible
@@JamiesBrickJams You'd be creating hydrogen if you vaporize aluminum, which is highly explosive
@@giovannicesaramorim9adigan961 Sounds like it'd do the trick
@@JamiesBrickJams hydrogen is very dangerous to use, and I do not reccomend using lego for encapsulating the explosion

You gotta make the pump battery operated, add a magazine and j
Make the trigger self reset.
Damn straight 😉 I've got an onboard compressor, pressure gauge, laser sight, and dual tanks working so far. Magazine and loading is a real pain, but we'll see!

Hey, bro, where can I buy lego pneumatics parts
There are a few technic sets with pneumatic parts out right now - like the Technic heavy duty tow truck! Most of mine just come from various sets over the years
@@JamiesBrickJamsAnd can you please tell me the numbers of the sets. It's just that maybe they don't exist not only in my city, but also in the country in principle
Will it work with airsoft bb?
Good question ... With the right bore, I'm sure it would! Worth trying for v2
I see you use mold king bricks besides lego
A few pieces I suspect might be yeah (can't remember the brand). But for the most part I try to stick to pure Lego
Without the needles, obviously.
😂
Can someone give me a list of all the parts he used? Im interested in making something like that
To be honest, you'd be better off building your own and layering on your own improvements - this one is pretty basic. Main things you need are just pipe, a tank, and the rubber piece that holds the pipe. The rest is all just support that I'm sure you could tweak to suit your pieces
@@JamiesBrickJams haha j just need a general idea to what I'm dealing with! I like building the thing then taking the key components and then applying to what I want to build!
That's a great approach to it! I'm afraid I don't keep a record of what parts I use and I've already disassembled this thing. But wish you happy engineering for your own 😁
There is a leather couch behind your shooting nooo
I tryed to build something like this, but it was much slower...
That's awesome, hope you give it another try! The 3 things that made the biggest difference were crimping the pipe, using the rubber holder to make a seal, and using Teflon tape to wrap around the axle. Getting a perfect fit with the Teflon tape makes a massive difference!
fun :D
Thanks 😁 V2 should be even more fun (once I get around to it)
@@JamiesBrickJams maybe you can use a flywheel system for fully automatic?
Unfortunately it requires quite a significant burst of air for each shot, so I'd still run into issues compressing the tank between shots. Though I do think semi-auto with a brief pause for compression should be possible!
@@JamiesBrickJams ah nice! maybe semi auto with a magazine that uses air pressure to reload too!
