- In this video on pokemon card investing I go over a bunch of frustrations I have in the pokemon card world at the moment, including another lacklustre set of twilight masquerade.

The other possible positive is taking this period as a breather, enjoying the collecting side getting one of every booster box and letting cash build up. Buffet welcomed these potentially long periods, while other managed funds felt they had to deploy their cash to keep their investors happy. Another bonus with cash here is that it then actually earns an income!

Twilight Masquerade is exactly the kind of set people say is mid until it’s out of print.
I get that people are burned out. And I’m by no means trying to say that people should “buy buy buy”. But TWM feels similar to a mid-SM where the top cards were trainers, except this set has Art Rares that people will eventually fall in love with. Anyone’s who’s pacing themselves will find value in TWM and all these other sets people think are mid.
Yeah it's not a bad set. People were disappointed with the Ogerpon SIR's but take them out and there's still tons of cool cards. I quite like how it doesn't feel like a traditional Pokemon card set, it's very unique in the look of some of the cards. You're right, it'll get there.
It really depends what surrounds it as well. I mean what's to say the following sets are all 'mid' too in collectors eyes. Then we could leave with temporal forces and paldea evolved being the top main sets from the era.
My wallet needed this SooOOOooooOoo bad!!! I basically have like 2-3 months to save up money or invest in other stuff!!

Scarlet and violet has definitely given some time to go harder into sword and shield!
S&V has some very good standard illustrations but they aren't rare enough. The SIRs have been rather poor. The fact that Magikarp is the top S&V chase card speaks volumes
Totally agree. Weird they departed so far from some of the amazing latter sword and shield sets..
151 still needs more time to appreciate both in value and collector interest. Everyone that joins the hobby over the next 4-5 years is going to be chasing 15-20 cards from 151 that they will want to add to their sets.

My thoughts on the latter half of SV - if they do chained scenes in the SIRs between sets it will drive the price/sentiment up drastically. Imagine an era where we are not just hunting hits to complete sets, but rather hunting hits over multiple consecutive sets in order to complete a 30+ card mosaic. They've dabbled in this but if they really make it epic and go all-in, I believe SV could be the greatest era to date. What u think?
I haven't been buying any of the new sets since 151. I have hope they are holding the heavy hitting big chase card sets for the final slots in the generation.

Wow! So dear hey.
The great thing about cheap, abundant product is that it will get into people's hands who will then become Pokemon fans forever and be buying our old product in the future years once they branch out of S&V. On top of that there are scalpers, flippers and investors leaving product alone which means even more supply. This is good for the hobby overall and good for investing long term, only scalpers and flippers suffer which I don't mind one bit as they add little value for the rest of us.

QC will only improve if demand suffers. Sportscards are the case study, prices have skyrocketed for sealed product and checklists have been super water down, so your EV is worse and worse each year post-2020 boom. No incentive to change if people keep buying / breaking. I also think people are hyper critical. The QC is disappointing (I agree 100%) but Scarlet and Violet has solid sets and their SIR’s beat out trainer gallery from sword and shield just not the alt arts. People were also hyper critical of sword and shield era sets now they are beloved…. (ES, fusion strike ect..) people love what goes up in value, so there is that bias. S & V hasn’t done that yet, but will.
Given enough time, and especially if some sets are short printed, they'll go up+
Very insightful. I agree 👍 this is the hamster wheel of ptcg. People bash most new sets (i believe this stems from our predisposition to be afraid of change) and then when they hit a certain scarcity people fawn over them. Grab your investment board and ride the waves 😊
I’m excited for the dragon set that is coming later this year, should be good. That have already announced Latias & Latios will be in the set

A key difference between the start of SWSH is that the Pokémon Company increased their manufacturing and printing capabilities in the US. With those now fully operational I would expect all of the SV sets to be reprinted or at least heavily printed to begin with…but we’ll see

I agree with most of what you said. Paradox is 266 cards - it’s very difficult to complete sets, if that’s your thing of course. As a fan of the games I’m torn as I like how they reflect/ celebrate the game. I do understand others want more early gen stuff. Perhaps it’s ok that these are not investment sets and are just for kids, collectors and players?
Kids would be loving opening Scarlet and Violet, I 100% agree. We also never know what time will do for a set, hey!

I do want a set that everyone can get excited about. The next one seems to be darkness based and is maybe a holiday set. Will it mean an umbreon card? I was trying to complete all the s and v sets - fates fixed that for me. 120 baby shinnies - out of my reach for sure

My attempt at a positive spin... Would a kid prefer a top chase card that has a 1/900 chance of a pull and 60% chance of a 10 or a 1/250 and 35% chance of a 10? Seems like the SV sets are going to be more fun to open even if the quality has taken a bit of a hit. For the collectors, getting a 10 is still a tough hit so the set still has a top hit with some value

This new set is for TCG players not collecting, that's the same reason there is more sets. The game was created to be played not make money off of. I see each side because I do both. But the pokemon company will always favor there player base first...
I see MTG as a purely player based TCG where as I see Pokemon as a hybrid for both collectors and players 👌
This is why I buy 99% vintage(yes, it can get pricey), but imo it's worth it. These newer sets have no life to them. Look at the vintage 3 pack blisters; different packs from different eras at times even. And the promos are fire. Like nowadays, pokemon is just releasing sets like it's on auto pilot.

I am looking at the cards in Twilight and there are a solid amount of sick cards that I want from it! I think it’s looking like a really solid set

If TPC stays on the same track for the second half, its possible temporal forces is our evolving skies and we just dont know it yet. But Id bet we see some more cool cards with non paldea pokemon and some higher pull rates with the megas.

I've only ever pulled 1 rainbow card, the Blastoise from Unbroken Bonds, and I loved it. I sold it for pre-fees $160.

There are some older Pokemon in this set. Zapdos, Lairon, JigglyPuff, Eevee, and some guest appearances from Snorlax, Bellsprout, etc. just gotta know where to look 😉

@@pokeoz91 There’s so many awesome cards in this set. Not too keen on the Masks but the some of the IR’s and SIR’s are beautiful. Pull rates aren’t the easiest. I opened 2 Booster boxes and the quality control is probably there worst I’ve seen in S&V sets so far.
Trainer Ryan thinks the set may be short printed at the moment due to poor allocation fulfilments. Think I’ll buy a case. Fingers crossed the sets move on up from here.

TWM as a whole is a bit disappointing, I will buy a booster box and a etb for the collection.
As for singles I like the Tatsugiri & Eevee illustration rares and that’s about it.

Brother it has always been like this. The first like 5 sets of an era featuring mostly the newer Pokémon until they notice nobody likes them and they start going back to older Pokémon like in Evolving Skies.
It does follow a similar trend, that's for sure!
I for sure agree with your sorta tier list of scarlet violet era sets, sv base and OBF just don’t have cards that excite me, and their prices are so low per card that unless you just wanna open that set to open it it’s kinda pointless, paradox rift and paldea evolved at least have cards that are exciting and cards that are valuable, to me a good set is all about the hits, I want my favorite pokemon with super quality artwork and of course cards with heavy value are always fun to pull

100% agree! As a Master Set Collector myself, there are too many sets and too many cards in each set. If there were fewer, larger sets... OK. If there were more smaller sets... OK. But by the time a get my teeth into one set, the leaks for the next set are already out. I mean, c'mon...

We are all just waiting for S & V's version of Evolving Skies to hit. I think we'll just know when we get a glimpse after sooooo many weaker character sets this far. A "Yep, take my money set".
Similar to 151 but a main set with a mix of different gen pokemon including paldean pokemon, that's what we need

Just so u know everyone thought chilling regin was a mid set and everyone thought that blazikian vmax alt art was a joke of a card and know one cared about it. I would agree that they are releasing to many to quickly but saying their isn’t a chase is crazy to me. Not everything has to be high price just so you know even evolving skies umbreom vmax used to be a 100£ and people said that expensive as well. I’m not hating but just so you know I think it’s a bit of exaggeration of what ur saying maybe just me who knows 🤷♂️
Where do you buy booster box cases for a good price ?
The guy I was getting them off is battling to get them now. I'm actually due to get some more and was about to suss out some options. Love the magnetic acrylic ultra pro cases.
To have memorable sets, there has to be lack lustre sets that put the good ones on a pedestal. If we only had great sets after great sets, nothing is great.

So far I think 151 has left the biggest impact on Pokemon enthusiasts since the S&V era has began. Having somewhat difficult pull rates with chase cards people actually want goes a long way.

It is honestly too much. To collect and invest every three months is a very quick turnaround. Plus I try to pick up a little bit Lorcana and they are on an every 3 month set drop as well. Hard to keep up at times.

You hit it over the head with this one. Agree 100% S&V is very lackluster compared to SWSH. I haven’t seen any nicely cut corners YET. Frankly idk how any “10’s” are true 10’s at this point.

Towards the end of the video when you said Pokémon should be trying to excite the consumers and pull them. Twilight mascarade is not that set. I couldn’t help but laugh. They need to stop giving us crap, improve the quality and delete Ogerpon from existence. I will say the print quality on temporal forces has been good for the most part. A lot of the art rares are not centered.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with TM.. is it worse than Forbidden Light (6th s&m set) No… is it worse than Chilling Reign & Roaring skies? Even go back to B&W and Dragons Exalted… the 6th set from all the previous eras.. And say it’s worse than all them? 😑😂😂
People will be sheep and follow the herd… it happened with Evolutions, Chilling Pain, Fusion Pain.. All were shit sets “not investable” and hated by the masses… Lone behold then 5 years later (for evolutions) and 2 ish years later for fusion and chilling and now look at the prices for “shit sets”.
The first 3 B&W era sets are four figure boxes. No one with a brain can say anything from SV so far is worse than those 3 B&W sets. People and content creators need to expand their horizon past the SWSH era and see SV is off to the best start to any era in history of the TCG and realize that sets having cards not worth more than the booster box is how it was for every era before all the money bros came in during SWSH 😮💨

It hasn't done anything for me. There is a few nice trainers and SIRs though.
It's coming in September good sir. Paradise Dragona will be the one that turns everyone into psychos. Chomping at the bit and fomo and price gouging and all that fun stuff the investors love to see. So don't worry your time in the sun is coming again soon.

A study of 31 stores reported a huge decline in the ability to shift product, with margins dropping significantly compared to S&S. Also, yes it's a players game, but it's also a collectors game. And the mass, rushed printing and huge increase in sets makes it harder for collectors to enjoy and find value.

@WeyHighDesigns I'm not sure I complained about any of those points? I never complained about sword and shield sky rocketing. My complaints were about set size, frequency, and the lack lustre nature of new sets, namely TWM. Just feels like it's been pushed out for the sake of another set being pushed out. And none of them were personal complaints, I'm fine with the state of the hobby and navigating it. It was more a voice for other / collectors wanting to complete sets or feel they're getting value. It's a nightmare!

They can’t just slow down the frequency for no reason. They have shareholders and investors. Maybe a few lackluster sets in there for sure but every block has some duds. There’s only so many pokemon that people get hyped for and if you over use the in every set people just complain about that also. I think Nintendo is doing a great job balancing everything. Collectors investors and players are all pretty happy right now from everything I’m seeing and hearing. I’m at tournament events and card conventions all the time. Hobby is in a great spot overall.

In my opinion, they augmented the quality of the common cards in Mask of change, lot of them are very beautiful, even better than the alternate full art.
I like needing more time to admire an “insignificant “ common, instead of actually ignoring them.
