Pro Trials Rider Versus 40 Years of Ibis Bikes

  • In the early 1980s, a hippie from Northern California started building pretty blue and purple steel mountain bikes and young trials rider named Andy Grayson helped make them famous. After winning two consecutive National Observed Trials Championships, Grayson was asked to appear on both the Johnny Carson show and David Letterman show. The latter appearance may or may not have cost him a summer job at a bike shop.
During the appearances, producers asked Grayson to wear a plain T-shirt, but he insisted on wearing his race jersey. The video segment was broadcast to millions of homes across the world and helped launch the brand into the national spotlight.
To celebrate our 40th anniversary, we’ve partnered with POC to create a retro inspired version of Andy’s iconic jersey and socks. POC is a Swedish apparel and protection brand that has been a key sponsor of the Ibis Cycles Enduro World Series team for seven years.
“When we decided to develop performance apparel that paid homage to our racing and brand heritage, POC was our first call” said Tom Morgan, Ibis President. “Our customers have been asking to purchase the team issue POC jerseys for years and we’re happy to make them available for the first time ever.”
Oscar Huss, head of product at POC, added “Ibis have unquestionably led the way in mountain biking. To compare the bikes from forty years ago with what we now ride is incredible. Despite the change in bikes and the industry, Ibis’ focus on innovation and pioneering new ideas has remained constant. It has underpinned our partnership over the years and makes the launch of the anniversary kit even more meaningful and enjoyable.”
Naturally, we asked 11x Nationals MotoTrials Champion Pat Smage to reprise the role of Andy Grayson in this retrospective video. Special thanks to Grayson for lending us his trials bike for the video!
This limited edition jersey is available for purchase though your local Ibis or online at Ibiscycles.com, link below: store.ibiscycl...

The 90's Mountain Trials bike is such a cool concept. Way ahead of it's time. Definitely my favorite of the bunch, although it's hard to not like that shiny new Mojo! Got a Ripley AF in the family... I think the Mojo is next!

First bike was my favorite. Reminds me of my GF Big Sur with white tires. Those old bikes were so much harder to ride.
Currently riding a Ridley LS (no bar ends thankfully).

Pat is such an impressive rider. His skills across so many different bikes puts him up there with the like of Chris Akrigg and Danny Mac. Ibis sure has a great ambassador with how positive and approachable Pat seems to be. Great guy with some impressive skills and creativity on display here and all his other vids.

Such an awesome video! I love the trials MTB. I wish there was a modern equivalent. It'd be sweet to have a bike built for trials but with versatility of switchable gears and such. If I were going to get an IBIS available today, though, I'd definitely go for a Mojo like Pat's!
