Dad opens Christmas gift to find the best surprise ever.

- For various reasons, my Dad and I didn't have the opportunity to have Christmas together for 25 years. We've seen each other several times in the past decade, but living on opposite sides of the country from each other, I haven't been able to spend Christmas with him since I was four years old. I thought this would be a good way to make up for that. He thought I was back in my city on Christmas Eve. I even texted him a picture of "the view" from my apartment that day (it was outdated...luckily he didn't notice the snow missing from the mountains in the distance.) He had NO idea....
My Uncle is the one explaining that this special gift is for my Dad as a combination Christmas and 60th birthday present. My Uncle is a two-time cancer survivor and during his second fight for his life, a few years ago, he lost a great deal of his voice due to the radiation, so you'll need to listen carefully to understand what he is saying. Very special that he was able to be part of this moment.
For those of you wondering, I was in the box for what seemed like eternity, but was really about twenty minutes. My uncle, being the sweet man that he is, was very concerned I wouldn't have enough air in there. so kept slightly lifting the back of the box with his toe to let air in while we were waiting for my Dad to arrive.

Wow... I haven't attended a family holiday like this (lots of people, decorations, laughter) for...many years. When you have it all the time - you take it for granted. Don't. THIS is life.
This made me cry. To have an uncle who is a 2 time cancer survivor, lots of family,a "surprise" daughter and Santa is so magical and beautiful. Always treasure your loved ones and spend time with them.

Donna G ...that's OK as long as they want to 'treasure' and 'spend time' with you...sometimes, despite your best efforts, this just isn't the case....as I've learned to my own cost, over the years. They are all married..I never have been, they all have kids and grandkids...I have neither. I have tried so hard with them all, including my Mother and Father (when they were alive), but nothing seems to be good enough for them and I just don't know why. It doesn't bother any of them that I feel this way, even though people 'outside' of the family bear witness to the situation. So, for my own sanity and health, I 've stopped trying now...I'm blessed with terrific friends and for that I'm truly grateful. So, yes, cherish your 'family', but recognise that the fact that you don't always have to be related to them! Thanks for 'listening'!

@Sharon Eyre: I can so relate to your family issues. I am so upset about not having a close relationship with my family. I'm tired of trying now also but it still affects me badly. Happy for you having good friends and seems you must have experienced some healing which is great. Hope to be happy again someday myself.

Im watching this in Nov 2020. It makes my heart feel good to see this family celebrate Christmas the way it should be celebrated. This year will be a tough one for all of us. We have to limit our gatherings and we won't be able to console each other for the loved ones and friends that we lost this year to Covid-19. We will never be the same but we will appreciate the loved ones that we still have. Many blessings to all.

Amazing gift probably the best present some one could ever have is to have a person in your family that you haven't seen in 25 years you get to see her again... Amazing it touched my heart and made me cry
Now that's what the holidays are about! Family, friends, knowing that the best gifts don't have to cost a fortune. They just need to come from the heart. And to have all his loved ones come together to surprise him with his daughter is the perfect example of that, along with the real reason for the season

We can know it's a surprise when we can clearly see it on the face of the person supposed to receive it ,and your dad didi realy have a beautifull surprise .don't do that to him again and try to see him as much as you can ,I used to do it untill I lost my dad (May he RIP) and today I regret every familly event I missed because I was busy living my life and chasing my dreams.

I did something similar for my Dad in 2012. I moved 3,500km (just over 2,000miles I think) away from my family in August and thought I wouldn't be able to get back for Christmas as the job I had usually meant working Christmas Day. Found out that we weren't going to open that day and were closing for the season a little early so I set up a plan with my Mum that I would fly home Christmas Eve and surprise the family on Christmas Day. My Dad rang me at 6am (I'm not a morning person. Lol) on Christmas Day and I whined about why he was calling so early when I didn't start work til 9 and I could've been sleeping! The whole time I was at Mums place. Lol. I hid in another part of the house when he arrived and had a camera turned on to catch the moment. I only got 10 seconds of video but I got the important part. His reaction when he saw me. To this day it's one of my favourite vids. Even posted it here. :)
