  • Lagrasse, a beautiful medieval town in the South of France
Road trips in France are fun. You actually don’t spend much time in the car because villages are quite close to each other, and each one is unique. You can stop pretty much anywhere and have good food while taking some pictures of vineyards,… little shops, … or tree-lined roads - from the center of town all the way to the countryside. Those are amazing.
This is the small town of Lagrasse, a beautiful medieval town that was founded on farming and ranching, crafts, and trade, mostly textile, so, obviously, it had much to offer, but the first building erected was the abbey in the 8th century. Later, a wall was built around it for protection, followed by a moat, for extra protection, then a large tower, La Tour de Plaisance.
Also a beautiful market hall, and, of course, lots of narrow streets and little squares.
Lagrasse is actually officially classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France.
Not very far from Lagrasse is Saint Hilaire, which also started as an abbey, this one built in the 13th century, and consisting of a monastery with a church, a cloister, chapter house, and the commons. Beautiful sculptures dedicated to a Saint of the area, Saint Sernin. And I will let you enjoy the rest of the tour.
