Suzuki Vitara (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Suzuki Vitara debuted back in 1988 as a small SUV. This was before anyone knew what a crossover is. Since 2005 Vitara got bigger, it had the word Grand before its name, and remained mostly unchanged for ten years. Meanwhile Suzuki launched the SX4 and slightly bigger S-Cross. And then Suzuki decided to shrink the Vitara.

    Nice work Marek, appreciate it.
    I'd like to learn more details usually not presented in product literature though.
    Such as that the 1.6 aspirated petrol engine for this car is NOT a Suzuki one, but a FIAT one. And even the FIAT guys are referring to this engine as being "THE engine with problems". This is one of the reasons why the 6th gear is missing - I could be wrong but I never heard about a six speed gearbox on a FIAT 1.6 aspirated petrol... The S grade model will have a six speed gearbox but with an 1.4 turbo petrol engine with better power and better torque. The questions are: would it be also a FIAT engine (which a VERY nice one, a little bit thirsty though) and in that case how long it's life will be with such a high torque on it...
    Another example about what should I appreciate to find inside a review: at motorway speed the new Vitara has a light and somehow vague steering which makes a lot of people feel a little bit insecure. Suzuki says that this issue is solved on the S grade version. I wonder if they really did it. Did you had the chance to try a S Grade Vitara yet?
    Thanks a lot
    Horatio

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives Před 8 lety +1

      +Horatio Beceriu The 1.6 petrol is a Suzuki motor. The 1.6 diesel is sourced from Fiat (Multijet). We don't have it here in Poland. The S model will come in early 2016. It's a 1.4 turbo, 140 hp, 220 Nm, so it could be a Fiat Multiair engine.

    Hello Marek. Love your videos as they both entertaining and informative. I have a question: What do you think about the new 1.0 boosterjet engine from Suzuki. In Bosnian market there is now a super affordable suzuki vitara offered with it. From what I was able to find out about that engine it should have better (lower) fuel consumption (compared to previously offered benzine engines in vitara) and higher torque (170 Nm I think) at very low revs so it's pretty similar in characteristics to a diesel engine. What do you think regarding longevity of such 3 cylinder motor and potential problems with it? Best regards and keep up the good work

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives Před 5 lety +1

      As far as the engine is concerned, I think I've driven a Swift with this engine, and it was OK. czcams.com/video/GfdmJu-y2BM/video.html
      As far as reliability is concerned, it's a fairly new engine, so I didn't hear any negative reports. However putting a small engine in a relatively big car means it's not going to be economical.

    great review! so basically, there is no point in buying it if looking for off-roader - did they change permanent 4x4 with electronic system? Would you suggest me to buy older model and if yes which year (between 2006 - 2014)?

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives Před 9 lety

      +Jerry Jernej Kelih It's got the same AllGrip AWD system from the SX4 S-Cross. The older Vitara was not exactly a pleasant car to drive on the road. I don't know what you want to do with it, where you want to drive it. The new one should be fine to drive to the beach.

    • @JernejKelih
      @JernejKelih Před 9 lety

      +Marek Drives i live in Norway now and for summer any car would do, but in the winter things become more complicated :) even just a daily comute includes gravel roads, and if i add that i want to reach mountains when its snowing like crazy ill need good grip. was looking into Forester but Vitara seems better deal (and looks nicer ;)

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives Před 9 lety

      ***** It didn't get stuck, which is always a good sign, and as I said in the review, I felt where its limits were. The Vitara has a permanent AWD lock, so with proper tires it might cope better, than with what I had here. But there is no diff lock, low range and such. I guess you'd have to ask your local dealer for a rougher test drive.

      Are you sure that's right? Here in Hungary, prices start from 17000 SGD with a dealer discount. Admittedly, the car is made here and Suzuki Hungary is basically like Proton in Malaysia or Maruti in India, considered the main "Hungarian" local car manufacturer. I'm actually considering buying a mid-specced version with red-black dual paint. Ironically I will be buying it from the money I made working in Singapore a few years back. When seats are folded you have at least a 15 to 20 degree rise, unsuitable if you do need a flat bed

      I guess so Marek, very frustrating trying to buy a new crossover or SUV that does have rear seats that fold flat.
      Only one I have found that is almost perfect in that respect is Subaru Outback and New Mondeo Wagon, though obviously the Mondeo is a long way short of a crossover or SUV, which is a pity as it goes rather well.
      Where I live one needs a vehicle with plenty of ground clearance, as the roads are rubbish. Due to the load I need to carry, I need a flat floor cargo bay, at least 1.75 m in length, but don't want a van or light truck. Thanks for your Vitara review, pity they have made it smaller and given little thought to the angle of rake of the rear seat backs when folded.
