Superman on Atari 2600 review!
Classic Game Room reviews SUPERMAN for Atari 2600 from 1979! It's the man of steel on your game system of wood. Superman saves the world by catching criminals, building bridges and smooching Louis Lane. Oh yeah. CGR Superman review features Superman video game gameplay on Atari 2600! - Hry
I used to play this all the time as a kid. Idk why but I loved it!
Lord Karnage re-upload this video since he misstakenly said, "Daily Bugle", instead of "Planet".
man, I will miss the regular Classic Game Room uploads here. I've been watching since 2011 and it's a bummer to see the show being scaled down a bit, but at least it's not going away completely, so I'm happy about that! At least it will still continue to exist. :) I think we all have something to be grateful for. Classic Game Room is my favorite video series out of all that exists on CZcams, let alone the entire internet, and it is truly legendary. Mark Bussler is a man of inspiration to me.
+RetroMegabyte I like turtles.
This needs more rings to fly through
Holy nostalgia, dude! I remember having this game when I was a kid. And I just remember it being a huge pain in the neck, LOL.
This might just be the most Super review you've ever done!
Thanks for explaining this. I never could figure out that damn game as a kid.
I used to play this game with my dad on my Ateri2600 when I was 5!!! Great memories!!
This game was the TITS back in the day! I loved it so very much. Of course, I was 6...
But, nevertheless, this game will always have immeasurable nostalgic value to me.
Wait.... Is Clark Kent, Superman????
+BENDROWNED33 SPOILERS
+thejackal007 !MEGA SPOILER ALERT! Bruce Wayne is Batman! Also, Jesus dies in the end of Passion of the christ.
cannibal151 Fuck, why did you give those spoilers?
+BENDROWNED33
Don't be foolish. Lois Lane would have discovered that pretty fast. His secret identity is called Dick Grayson, living along with his sugar daddy Bruce Wayne.
No silly Clark Kent needs glasses to see, but Superman has perfect eyesight.
This was my first adventure game when I was a kid. I had it ages before I had Adventure. I was all over this game! My record is 1:05! It has a glitch - maybe the first video game glitch ever! I've never heard anyone talk about it...I may be the only one who knows about it. I should do a video!
Please dont stop man. Your style is one of a kind.
Loved this game, Still have it
Christopher Lambert was in Highlander.
Highlander also starred Clancy Brown.
Clancy Brown is best known for playing Lex Luthor in Superman: The animated series.
I win!!!
Kyle Pittman One of his most well know roles?
+WeirdoTZero
Yeah, but don't forget that Duran Duran got their name from the awesome movie Barbarella from 1968 (which honestly didn't age too well), which is Superman's 30th birthday, as he first appeared in Action Comics 1938, exactly 10 years after Roger Vadim was born, who would go on to marry someone from Hanoi ;-) called Jane Fonda and make a movie with her called Barbarella. 10 years was by the way also the age of Christopher Lambert, when Barbarella was shot (shot 1967, released 1968), who would later become an undead sword-wielding, skirt-wearing scottish zombie from unknown high lands.
+WeirdoTZero There can be only one!!

Truxton !!
Frank Schneider I've seen CGR's video of Truxton before to get the joke. By the way, do you wanna se my videos? Go to my channel! And while you're at it, subscribe to my channel.
Lord karnage will be missed
+ace andrew His regular upload schedule will be missed. He's not leaving.
+Floydthefuckbag If he only uploads like once or twice a month I'll definitely miss him, but it will be a nice surprise when there's a new Mark video if that happens.
+ace andrew I only discovered his channel a few months back
Love the ending music. I had this one, but didn't know how to play it either. Fun to fly around as Superman though. How about Zod vs Darth Vader?
Oh yay it's back! :D
Thanks Mark! I was aware of this game back then but never played. This is a lot like Raiders of the Lost Ark where you have to wander around and do things without anything in the way of instruction. I never could figure out Raiders!
+Stash Merkin
Actually I'd compare it rather to Adventure, not as intuitive, but somewhat similar, which as also from 1979 iirc. Main difference here is that you play against time, so memorization of the city and location of the subway stations is the prime task to get the best scores.
Frank Schneider
Thanks man! Now that you mention it, yes rather like Adventure. I could finish that one but Raiders just confuzzeled me.
Mark, I love you more every time you mention Duran Duran!
I had this game when I was a kid & couldn't figure out what the do. 33 years later & this video tells me how to play the game.
Best review yet.
I owned and played it on my Atari 2600 back then. Ha. :D
The helicopter picks up pieces of the bridge & scatters them around to different areas to make putting it back together more challenging..Don't see how you beat this but never ran across it while it was doing that lol
Lol such a lame simple game but I love it. Got an Atari for Christmas in either 79 or 80 and it was such a fun system back then, the games were simple but tough for my little 6 year old brain. When I finally got Superman I was excited of course simply because it was a Super Hero game. Took me a while to beat it but once I did I was so happy. Lol I broke it out the other day and played through it, funny how it only takes a few minutes to complete it. That was such a cool time period to grow up.
Wait Clark Kent just went inside that Telephone boot during this attack. Wow out came Superman, HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE??
Damn, phone booths are fucking magical
They sure are. It's the magic of Santa Claus. I just now it!!
So esoteric!
6:06 You can hear the static noise LOL!
Is there any game play difference in the different label superman games?
I've always thoroughly enjoyed this game. It's a shame the the bridge pieces always are placed in the same spots but the game can still be a challenge with both difficulty setting on A.
Superman was pretty good game considering it one of the earliest Atari 2600 games produced, in fact it was much better than many of their later games. Superman and Adventure were the only two early games that had something approaching a plot and and a true endgame.
So is this the best bridge building simulator for the Atari 2600?
did the a - b difficulty switches do anything on this game?
+nexgenhippy not sure but the Select switch pauses the game....and its 2 players if you wish.. Left Controller controls back and forth and the right is up and down
+nexgenhippy Yes they do. The right difficulty setting affects the speed of your adversaries. In the A position the bad guys and the kryptonite satellites move twice as fast as they do when it's in the B position. On the Left player side the A difficulty switch effects Lois Lane. In the B position she will automatically appear after you get in incapacitated from getting zapped by kryptonite. In the A position you have to walk about looking for her in order to get your flying ability back.
+Ken Wheeler ahhh thank you
nexgenhippy Glad to help.
I played the shit out of this game... and never had any clue if I was doing anything right.
Awesome👻
Back in the day I could finish this game in a minute or so.
Fortress (1) remains the movie I Went to see most times at the cinema. 5 times in one week. I loved it.
Much better IMO than the sequel.
This was the game that invented epilepsy warnings for video games.
My aunt, who is still to this day constantly full of shit, told me you could put the helicopter in jail when I was a kid & I can still remember trying it over & over one day & wondering what I was doing wrong lol....fast forward about 30 years later, I recently played it with her 6 year old grandson & he thought the whole stick figure Superman flying around & kissing Lois Lane with the repetitive beep was the funniest thing ever =P
The MOST COMPLEX Atari 2600 game has 21 screens to the left or right, when you go up or down out of any screen it goes to different parts of the city, when you go into a phone booth you go into different parts of the subway & when you exit the subway to the left, right or down you go to different parts of the city, if you keep going up you stay in the subway that's 4 to 5 different parts of the subway. you need to put all the robbers in jail & complete a 3 piece bridge while the helicopter picks up parts of the bridge & puts them in different parts of the city while kryptonite satellites are moving around through out the city & subway. if a satellite touches you when you are Super Man you lose your power to fly until you kiss Louis lane. when you put all robbers (Lex Luther is the only robber that has a hella pack on his back & flies around) in jail & complete the 3 piece bridge at the bridge sight part of the city. you must go to the phone booth with a phone on it to change from Superman to Clark Kent so you can walk across the Bridge then into the phone both with a diamond on it because that is the daily Planet building, X-Ray vision is when you push the button down & move the joystick in any direction to see up, down, right or left screens before you walk or fly to those screens. This is by FAR the MOST COMPLEX Atari 2600 game EVER made (I mean its so complex most people have NO idea how to play it so they think & say bad things about the GREATEST game EVER made for the Atari 2600 it was one of the FIRST releases after the system was released) but it can be one of fastest games to complete: I seen it completed in 38 seconds. I completed it in less then a minute. The Atari 2600 SuperMan is by far THE BEST GAME FOR THE Atari 2600 it sells for under $5 most the time. it beats the crap out ALL these 1 screen games for sure. today is 12-27-23
Did you play the game with a Sega Master System controller?
looks more like a spiderman with a cape than a superman lol
Shit got crazy with the Fortress 2 refrence.
I don't remember photh booths smelling like pee. Maybe just New York? I went up in a elevator once and it smelled like pee. Now San Francissco is a big toilet -- a hoplessly clogged one.
0:04 XD
i got some videos that are pretty chill.
Christopher Lambert was Lord Raiden.... need I say more?
watch my videos on Atari 2600 superman for a map & how to play the game
ok I Will :)
The helicopter spawns the kryptonite.
Nice, I've been playing this again recently and still didn't have a clue what to do like back in the back in the day, so thanks for this! Stil an utterly appaling game, but now I have closure.
I want to watch this video but sadly can't because of that high ping sound. gah my ears x.x
+Iacon Dawnshire lmfao i feel bad for the man playing it
I just have sensitive ears to some high pitched sounds. The price checker in the aisles at Walmart hurts my ears
no idea how I beat this game as a kid
DMCA flag? I can't watch this video, it keeps saying an error connecting to server. I'm able to watch your other videos, and I'm able to watch any other video on youtube but this one continues to say error. the last time I saw this, someone had it issued a DMCA against the video
and never mind, after 8 attempts to load this video and going to other videos in between it loaded. CZcams's app has been screwing up a lot lately since they pushed updates to pitch their stupid CZcams red, I wonder if that was the issue
Quite difficult game. I once completed it in 2,5 minutes!
I've always liked this game, other than the annoying sound effects
The Fairchild channel f has competition for the worst sounding thing ever.
I figured I'd ask since this channel is about to be way less active. Who was the guy who did reviews with Mark WAY back in the day? He's in the dino crisis review and thought he was funny.
I think Atari games should be captured @60FPS...
+allluckyseven I doubt Atari games have 60 frames total, let alone per second.
+jcrowley1985 To eliminate the interlacing issue.
jcrowley1985 Actually, it's to eliminate some of the flickering.
Sooo........Sooo...BAD GAME :D But i love it!
Ding! WAWAWAWAWAWAWAWAWAWAWAWA......
I don't like pancakes.
What an odd premise for a game
Without a manual you could play some of these old games for years and never have a clue.
+kao ko
When bought cartridges came in a box with a printed manual. :-)
+Frank Schneider Yeah I know I'm old dude
I wonder... Is Atari 2600 a 8 bit console?
+Viktor Von fuling Yes. The Atari uses a 6507 processor which is basically an ultra-shitty version of the 6502 used in the NES. There's almost no computers that are less than 8-bit. 8-bit just means that it can use numbers between 0 and 255.
It doesn't make much sense to say that the 2600 didn't have 8-bit graphics but the NES did. For one, the Atari had a palette of 128 colors which, if we're using that for our definition would mean it was 7-bit. But, NES games had a palette of 64 colors, which would mean it was a 6-bit only, worse than the 2600.
The main difference between the NES and Atari's graphics hardware is that it exists on the NES. The NES had special hardware to handle graphics, the 8-bit Picture Processing Unit which was a dedicated co-processor just for graphics that had its own RAM. The Atari used the Television Interface Unit which was RAMless and basically designed to just take data given to it from the CPU and draw it on screen.
The Atari looked like shit because dedicated graphics hardware was too expensive.
+Logical Phallusy Good info. I was wondering why they stopped talking about bits. I'm still waiting for the Nintendo 128.
Funnily, the Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox, Wii, and Wii U all used 32-bit CPUs. The Dreamcast's was a beefed up, more advanced version of the one in the Saturn (SH4). Xbox had a pretty crappy PC processor in it (A Pentium-3 based Celeron ), and every Nintendo system since the Gamecube has used iterations of a 32-bit PPC processor.
Sega really messed up people's ideas about processors back in the day. The difference between 8 and 16 bit is pretty huge because a 16-bit machine could process numbers between 0 and 65535 in the one clock-cycle whereas an 8-bit machine can only process numbers between 0 and 255 in one cycle. All numbers outside of that require a lot of tricks and take a lot more effort. After 32 and 64-bit there's diminishing returns because nobody outside of science and engineering really needs that level of precision.
Graphics cards today are still mostly optimized for 32-bit because human perception can't tell the difference. Only recently does it make sense for more than that due to memory increases and the scientific community using GPUs for other purposes. I program on GPUs and it's a pain in the ass how numbers larger than 64-bit are handled.
The future isn't really in bits, it's in optimized instruction sets and parallelization. The Cell processor in the PS3 was built around this. It's a 64-bit PowerPC architecture that's somewhere between a normal CPU and a GPU. This is one of the reasons that it was more difficult to develop for. I hope future consoles move back to it because an advanced Cell machine could be a monster but I fear that developers would rather use off-the-shelf components to build what is essentially a stripped down PC like with the Xbone and PS4. Maybe the NX? That would be rad.
That's correct but there's also an advantage of being able to process a 64-bit number in one cycle. A 32-bit floating point number is only accurate to about 6 digits. A 32-bit floating point can't really tell the difference between 1.1234567 and 1.23457. A 64-bit double precision number is accurate to about 16 digits. That's why scientists used Unices and Macs because their processors were designed for that. I doubt we'll see any games that require that amount of accuracy or the amount of RAM you can address with a 128-bit processor for a while. My lab bought 1 TB of RAM recently and it cost thousands. When Petabytes become affordable it will be a completely different world.
Better than Robotron
35 seconds before a Superman 64 reference.... to much.
So this was the first ever licensed game?
70s licensed games are better than taday's.
Sorry mark but...... I don't like pancakes
I used to play this game, and it was too boring. This game was released a year after "Superman: The Movie" came out, and it was the first "Superman" game from 1979. The cartridge you see here is a text label version which was the original pressing. The second release had a picture label with Superman on the illustration, and that was from 1981 along with re-releases on older Atari games from that era. Atari started to used text label cartridges beginning in 1977 through 1980 as "Game Program", and then by 1981 through 1982, Atari used picture labels for all of the older titles including the first one which was "Pac-Man", the worst port of an arcade classic.
This review gave me a seizure.

+Daric Soldar hey dad!
***** If it's wet and warm, that's all that matters. Just close your eyes. You might need a paper bag...or two...or 5.
***** Can't be any more germ-infested than any of the Kardashian clan.
hey dad Daric
I played this game yesterday, I stopped playing after 20 seconds.
Who came up with this crappy excuse to give the players a headache.
This game looks seizurific.
WARNING: This video may cause seizures and headaches.
Enjoy the video
Feels moe like a beta game with an incomplete corrupting engine, whose not getting annoyed by the constant flashing screen? Because i do.
game can give you a seizure
That game looks like it fucking sucks.
This is as bad as E.T to me.
