  • A Tarp and Bivy camp on the Border wall in Northumberland,
A great walk in, with some great views,
    A very windy wild camp,
I suffered yet again from mad condensation, can only think I produce so much heat when wrapped up, and then it hits the cold spots.
Moving forwards, for one night camps it’s not a problem.
A great camp with some good company

I put my gore tex jacket on top of my sleeping bag at the foot end. It helps insulate the bag from the cold material of the Bivy. Sleeping mat on the outside gives more room for the sleeping bag to loft and for the damp air to move to the head and out. I made a little tent pole to lift the foot up as well, but you know what? You always get some condensation in the winter and especially if the Bivy gets wet. Even Goretex won’t breathe once the water is lying on it. Good video. 👍🏻

@northumberlandmountainhopper I also had bad condensation under a tarp throughout my sleeping bag, so today I did some research and it seems that being in a bivy bag is akin to being in a plastic bag. The solution is a thinner sleeping bag and a bivi that lets heat and condensation escape. One that breaths, so that’s my next quest.

Just as a matter of interest, I have two Alpkit bivi Hunka bags and a Elan hooped bivi. I have only used the bags within my Alpkit Tarpstar 1, but neither the tarp tent or the bags have had condensation in either cold or warm conditions. I’ve used the Elan twice in both freezing and near freezing conditions. I wonder if it’s because I’m a cold sleeper. I do always have a small gap under the outer fly or tarp. Maybe this stream of air at at low level prevents a back eddy causing a tumble drier like air zone into which I breath moist air. Looking back I never had anything other than very minor condensation on the inside of the fly in my Alpkit soloist which I have since sold. It’s a mystery why you experience so much condensation. Maybe your a bit of a furnace Adrian? 🤣 We must continue to experiment!

12:24 - I’m not a big fan of Alpkit stuff. Is that bivvy a copy of the Snugpak one?

Hi and thanks for watching, similar I suppose but aren’t most bits of kit, it’s nice and light, but due to condensation issues it’s only any good (for me)on a warm dry night !!! Well that’s my experience of my Alpkit Hunka bivy, it was the first and last time in the Elan !! gortex and three layer fabrics on the army bivy’s well worth the extra weight
      Cheers

@@northumberlandmountainhopper I've been using his.kit a long time now and I swear by it, he's a local lad to me, he's very good to work with, may I suggest you get one of his stoves to go with the shield I've got the 60 ml one for a long burn time. And you just blow them out and get the simmer ring to ATB Daz
