  • On the seventh anniversary of the release of "Spring Day" by BTS, Professor Donna Kwon breaks down the musical elements that make it such a compelling, moving, and enduring classic in the canon of K-Pop. This video is based on a special presentation that was commissioned by the BTS Utah Army for an event on February 10, 2024.

It's very interesting how playing a progression ending in IV and then suddenly changing it to iv can turn a major mode song into such a melancholic piece! I've seen this in other k-pop songs: Twice's 'What is Love?' and another one from BTS 'Life Goes on' as examples from very mainstream groups, but you can also find it in Mamamoo Moonbyul's highly melancholic song 'For me' and G-Friend's 'Night Drive'.
Loved the music analysis and would love to see more! There's not a lot of channels that actually discuss and analyse k-pop songs, and it's a shame because there are a lot of songs with very interesting use of tonality and modality out there! Thank you so much for sharing!
PD: I see you guys like I-DLE, so I would love if you analysed one of their songs! Singles or B-sides!
