When I was a kid my mate had a wax jacket that he was fanatical about. Obviously we thought this was hilarious and antiquated. We had synthetic jackets that were much lighter and more comfortable, and rightly assumed that technology had moved on. Now all these decades later I do camping and bush craft. Not only have I become a fan of waxed jackets, but I make my own recipe of Greenland wax, and Im about to make a set of tin pants and a tin jacket. I have literally come full circle. Synthetics are great for "ultralight hikers", tourists, and people trying to summit Everest. But if you actually need to do some WORK, and you need kit that will come with you, protect you, come back in one piece, and be ready to go right back out again, you cant beat good quality waxed canvas. Its waterproof, somewhat breathable, hardwearing and the waxing lubricates the fibres so the canvas itself last many times longer than its normal life expectancy. 200,000 lumberjacks cant be wrong.
waxed-cotton jackets are a true piece of tradition to wear, AND a waxed cotton garment is far better for the environment than the new outdoor products of nylon, which have lots of very dangerous chemicals!!!! This fact really DOES NOT fit with the idea of pristine nature, the outdoor equipment industry should seriously think about it. I got back to old canvas surplus bags... they are a better option, and carry a lot of history too less is more, simple is beautiful
this took me 1hr to wax jkt. put in hot room for about 6hrs jkt looked minted. wen jkt cooled down it became hard i thought no dramas it will sofen up. it sort of cracked showing white marks think i put far too much on but i was thinking the more the better. anyways back in hot room everything melted jkt looking minted again. same again white cracks but not as bad. put hairdryer over cracks then bk into hot room. Everythings perfect now no cracks wen bending arms jkts softened up & its as waterproof as a ducks arse. took a wile but really happy with results will try less next time.
I have the same problem with the "cracks" on my barbour and I was so happy when I found this comment from you. Hopefully I can save my jacket with some work with the hairdryer then :)
After using a hair dryer on it, it evened all out and looked great - a little bit of white around the back shoulder - where I put way too much LOL! But a little more of the hair dryer and it looks amazing - better still, it really does repel the water like a duck!
Always melt the wax for a good twenty minutes and make sure you’re in a dry warm area. Keeping the jacket warm is essential to relaxing the fibres so it takes in the wax. Never apply it in a gel like state, you’re not going to get an even coating that way.
The jar of Gold Standard will last MANY waxings - you don't use much. In the video, he puts it on by hand and I did the same - a little dab on fingertips, rubbing in all over in sections and used only about an 1/8th of the jar. Jacket looks amazing and is so waterproof! The water flows off it like water on a ducks back! :)
Don't throw the sponges away that've been used to wax the jackets. Just heat the sponges up and they can be used again. I've just rewaxed 2 Barbours this way and I think I can do more.
@@redlady935 so long ago I can’t remember. Sorry. But I can say that it’s better to have them do it than do it yourself. They result isn’t worth the amount you save
Is oilskin the same as wax? Or is that something different? I bought an oilskin duster a few years ago, and I'd like to reproof it ( it may or may not actually need it, but just to be safe ). I already have the wax ( which does require melting ), but I don't know anything beyond that.
+Angel Bowfinger I think oil cloth uses boiled linseed oil or something like that. It's different from wax cotton. I'm not sure whether oil cloth is the same as oilskin though. It looks like it's not a specific term judging by the Wikipedia article.
Gold Label- water proof wax www.viovet.co.uk/images/import_backups/image_import_1340701396.JPG used on Oilskin type jackets in England/ Australian/ NewZealand. This maintains its suppleness.
What's the name of the wax, please? Those of us outside the UK are not as familiar with these brands. It sounded like Gold-something. And the label on the tin is hard to read even if one uses a magnifying glass on the image.
We should keep a closer eye on these comments! You can order the wax direct from our website: londontradingpost.ca/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=11&products_id=44 Thanks for watching!
So, I reproofed my barbour coat with the genuine wax, and now its as stiff as a plank of wood :-( Followed all the instructions carefully....what did I do wrong?
Can I wax my jacket again after I put it in the washing machine 😭 the Barbour page says not but I want to know if someone tried and worked? I ruined my jacket :(
Hello Rich could youplease help me... I ignorantly put mine in the wash due to the unpleasant smell. I've read the jacket can no longer be rewaxed. What will happen if I apply this Barbour tin on the washed jacket? As I don't see there being any significant difference from it being like any normal wax touch up
You can wax any cotton. Take your time, small amounts hand rubbed in. It may take an hour or 2. Spread it out over several days if you must. I've waxed canvas that had never been waxed before, and turned out well.
I have seen an olive coloured Barbour jacket but I want a black/very dark green jacket - could I add black dye to the Barbour wax to give the jacket a much darker look? Thanks.
That wax is awful. Ruined my jacket. I’ve rewaxed Barbour and belstaff with their own wax with no issues but the gold label wax would disappear while using a hard drier but as soon as the jacket is worn white streaks and cracks….

Love using this wax for all my Barbour wax jackets, it's so much easier than Barbour's recommend wax! Thank you :-)
Fab straight to the point …. I can re wax my Barbour hat now 😊
Life saver recommending that wax. Thanks
Lovely video. Thank you very much! 🇬🇧

They are also far more durable than the new plastic clothes..
Thank you for posting this - my Merlin motorcycle jacket now looks better than the day I bought it !

Hi thanks for your video. What is the best thing to clear inside jacket. Thanks.
Thank you sir,now I know how to rewax my jacket.
Cool video thanks.could I use Gold standard wax to reproof a Barbour Tarras bag please?
thank you for this clip do you have any tipps for me when i made it with a waxspray?
💯🤝 thank you
what can of wax is used? Any website where it can be bought?
Does it not seep through and damage the lining? could never work that out
done it took an hour, half way through i thought,''maybe i should just buy a new one'' but no i perservered,.looks goodf
Well done John!
Hello, thank you very much for sharing this. Is a single tin of wax enough to reproof a classical Barobour jacket, like the one in the video?
yes, you won't use as much as you think, hope you still have the jacket after 7 years

How do you clean the inside ?
What color has this jacket? Olive, green olive, or sage green?
Is it a good idea to use a hairdryer to melt the wax further for the fabric to suck the wax in and leave an alternative finish?
A hairdryer is a good idea, it looks a lot better too
Cuando se arruga salen manchas blancas sale a la superficie la cera
Could i use this method to wax a non waxed cotton jacket? Or would it look terribe?
What kind of shop can I take it to, to have my new cotton Belstaff professionally waxed? Like, a shoe repair place or some old timey cleaners?
Jane Madison If you are in Asia. I recommend a store, they are great in cleaning and rewaxing BARBOUR and belstaff In Taiwan
How much dressing do I need? I have a 40ml tin, is that enough or do I need to buy the 200ml tin?
Did you find out? Thanks

I'd like to know that too.

The wax is Gold Label Reproofing wax, available on our website: londontradingpost.ca/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=11&products_id=44
WHICH WAX?
Can the quilted jackets also be waxed, or is the waxing just for the cotton jackets?

London Trading Post what about if you dirt / mud etc on it ??
Reprooofing belstaff
So, I reproofed my barbour coat with the genuine wax, and now its as stiff as a plank of wood :-(

sounds like you put to much on. Try soften it with a hair dryer and see if you have excess, if so, wipe off while it is still warm.
The hairdryer trick is really essential for a DIY job. It really is what makes the difference.

I heard your not suppossed to wash in machine at all, thats rhing with wax jackets cant wash them
How to clean a waxed jacket.
"Very well-used."
We now have to wipe off the dust..
I've used this wax with a hair dryer but when the jacket gets scuffed it leaves a white mark. I have white marks all over my jacket!
