Former Justice minister Sacky Shanghala says he had so much hope and expectation that President Hage Geingob’s health would improve following his treatment in the U.S.
Shanghala, who landed his first job as Geingob’s senior special assistant in 1999 while studying law at the University of Namibia, says he wrote a letter to Geingob, whom he fondly calls ‘Omes’ when he left for the U.S., but never sent it to him.
Shanghala and former minister fisheries and marine resources, Bernhardt Esau, who are both detained at the Windhoek Correctional Facility in connection with the Fishrot scandal following their arrest in 2019, shared many memories of the late Geingob.
Shanghala recalled Geingob's outstanding work ethic and his ability to tell stories. He says Geingob was a father figure and a man who taught him about dressing elegantly. He says Geingob commanded respect locally and among international leaders. In addition, Shanghala says that Geingob will be remembered for his contribution to the country’s Constitution.
An ambitious Shanghala shared that it was in 1999 when he showed up unannounced at Geingob’s office, the country’s Prime Minister then. Shanghala then proceeded to Geingob’s home at Casa Rosalia after failing to meet him at his office. There, he invited Geingob to Unam, where he and other students intended to set up a Swapo party youth league structure.
A day after their engagement and having made an impression on Geingob, Shanghala was appointed as personal assistant.
A few days later, Shanghala was on a trip to the U.S. with Geingob. There, Shanghala was tasked with organising a meeting with Bill Gates. At first, Geingob didn’t believe when Shanghala had secured the meeting.
“Then Bill Gates security comes and tells him (Geingob) that there is a meeting at Bill Gates’ house”.
In addition, Shanghala narrated the unpleasant encounters with Geingob. This was when Geingob decided to address the masses in Zambezi region without reading his prepared speech.
Later, while flying back to Windhoek, Geingob questioned Shanghala how the address went, to which Shanghala replied: "Prime Minister, this was the most horrible experience I ever had of you speaking. Why are you barking, why didn't you say this and that? Yoh, the man was livid”, Shanghala reminisced.
In addition,Esau, says he first met Geingob in 1991 and engaged in various projects over the years. Esau recalls having lunch together with Geingob and the newly sworn-in President Nangolo Mbumba as they were all working in the same building. As a result, they gathered in Geingob’s office.
“I had a dream yesterday, where he embraced me in Independence Avenue, maybe it was a farewell,” Esau commented about Geingob’s passing.
Shanghala and Esau, served in Geingob’s administration and their friendship with the late President extended beyond official duties. The duo are currently awaiting trial in connection with the Fishrot scandal following their arrest in 2019. They have been detained at the Windhoek Correctional facility since their arrest, with no bail being granted.
