  • Clear cutting an area on your property sounds like a big task, and can seem visually unpleasant. But, a few buddies with chainsaws can cover some ground quickly. Following up in the area with prescribed fire and herbicide can help transform closed canopy forest into incredible habitat for deer and other wildlife! Using prescribed fire will help consume the debris in the site over time, and keep it in early successional habitat. Herbicide can also be used in conjunction with prescribed fire to get rid of undesired species on the site.

How do you stop them from growing back

As a public land hunter, I can say they're great for deer! Especially here where it's solid hardwood stands for miles around.

I have an area on my property that was mostly Poplar, I opened up a roughly two acre field with nothing but a chainsaw, and I have taken many bucks on this tiny clearcut. The Deer absolutely love browsing on the poplar saplings that are shooting up trying to reclaim the field.

Nice work!! Maintain it with some fire and you’ll have a great spot for years to come!

Southern Tioga county and we got a Hydro-ax this fall to try and make some clear cuts for wildlife and feed the outside wood stoves on the farm. Hopefully it will freeze up good soon to get some done

So I did a burn last year and doing a 5 acre clearcut this very soon would it be better to burn it this year or wait till next year

If you're referring to the clear cut you intent on cutting this year, we would say wait a year or two. Let the sunlight into the area and see what the seed bank will do. You should have a good flush of growth. You may want to wait a few years to burn it, depending on your objectives for the site. Best of luck!

    A chainsaw is a deer's best friend.

Are you saying Autumn Olive? The text narrative says Autumn Island. I recently discovered Autumn Olive and understand deer like it.

Yes autumn olive. Sorry, our captions are auto generated and sometimes miss interpret a few things. Deer will browse it and some other wildlife species and song birds will eat the berries. But it is an invasive and not something we want to dominate a site.
