I love how simple this actually is. I don't like automatically expanding snippets, but following your tutorial I just kind of set up a abbrev table file, bound expand-abbrev to my leader, (and removed expand-abbrev from evil-insert-state-exit-hook), and now everything seems work exactly how I want it to.

Is there any advantages to using this over a package like Yasnippet?

i prefer abbrev. mainly because, yasnippet forces cursor movement to fields. i prefer free form. I did mention it at 7:30.

They are very similar. If you prefer free movement, you can define your snippets in yasnippet. IMO, yasnippet has better snippets management.
