My fly wheel is a little bit off so let me explain my t on the fly wheel is slightly off but the piston it at the top which means top dead center and the lil cam chain sprocket it good
Hey Jamie, sorry for the slow reply. We've got some longer videos on our channel which go into more detail czcams.com/video/R7H54iZfEBI/video.html Hopefully that'll help, but let us know if not!
If the cam sproket is off by a tooth would it cause the engine to run hot? Have a Thumpstar 125cc motor that runs good but running very hot. Has a new top end and valves in it.
I have an Orion 125cc 1p54fmi engine and it won’t start. I have spark, fuel and compression. My comp tester says I have 170psi. And it wouldn’t start after my chain snapped. So weird, I have looked everywhere and I don’t have any more to look for? Any suggestions?
Hey Potatis! Sounds like you've checked the most important bits, we have had it before where the spark wasn't strong enough and a new plug got us running again. The chain snapping can send a bit of a shock through the engine depending how violent it was. Have you removed the flywheel cover to check inside for damage? Whilst you've got that open we'd recommend checking the timing chain and sprocket are all aligned, could also go as far as to check the valve spacing as well. Hope that helps. Let us know if you have more questions!
There's a little bolt on the opposite side of the head to the cover. Make sure it's the one lined up center of the round cover! The cover will fall off so be ready to catch it, and be careful not to over tighten it when you put it back on! Good luck!
Sir, I got the head back on with a new carb and I can hear it knocking. I thought I had the marks lined up but the flywheel has two marks on it about an inch from each other. And when I turn it it kind of wants to fall back to a spot in between the two marks. Won’t hold at either one.
Hey Greeno! The flywheel sometimes has timing and firing marks, indicated by T and F respectively. T is the one you want to go for to get things lined up. It isn't unusual for the flywheel to not sit exactly on the mark by itself, the cam shaft will be pressing on the valves when you turn it by hand, and if you've got the spark plug in you'll also be feeling some compression from the piston.
You got it. Yup the two marks F and T. Yes I feel that compression. I will make sure the T is lined up. The dot on timing chain is just a link or two below at T. I will make sure the T is proper and give it a go. Thanks!
Do you know if you have good compression? If the engine is well used it might be worth checking all the bolts are tight and your gaskets aren't blowing, but if it's newer and you have ignition then it's possibly fuel/air mix so carb. Might need a strip and clean or if it's also nice and shiny then maybe not set up quite right.
Sorry for the slow reply James! Yes it could. If your valves aren't opening at the right times you can get backfiring. Can also be running rich as Ethan mentioned, lots of possible causes.
If the magneto is on the crank then yeah the plug sparks every 360°. The second spark would fire before the intake valve opens because ignition timing is set anywhere from 5° to 30° before tdc. So it would probably be firing while the exhaust valve is open (so no compression) hope this helped
Hey I just replaced my valves by some new on my 110cc (with spring seals and everything) and a new piston and it has a very good compression! But When I try to start it it does back fire and a lot of gas spit of my carburetor. I took around 30 hours working on it and now I need help haha thanks
Just some random guy here, but i personally experienced that they backfire and cough a lot when they are running lean (not enough fuel intaken) and I'm guessing you set the timing right because you probably watched this video to be in the comments section.
Sorry for the slow reply! Hopefully you've got it sorted by now, but if not a couple of things you could check: 1. Spacing on the valves, you'll need to know the spacing specs for your engine and have some accurate feeler gauges to set them right. We've got a video on that you could watch if you haven't already. 2. Carb setup, make sure it's clean and put together nice and tight so you're not getting excess fuel. Check the stock setup specs for your carb and work from there with air/fuel mixture and idle settings, hopefully you'll get her running sweet!
Thanks for helping out dude! We really appreciate the viewers giving their input in the comments! Also reminds us we haven't replied to other comments in ages! Ride safe fellow Shiner!
Hey Blake! When you say cam shaft, does it sound like it's coming from behind the flywheel? It could be the cam chain tensioner. They're sprung and sometimes catch a bit then make a tapping sound when they release.
Just done top end build, followed this video to set the timing, gave it a kick and it started for about 5mins! Now it won’t start lol tried everything. Need some help pleeease
Hi Bobby, it probably wouldn't have run well to begin with if you had the timing off so hopefully that's all good. Is there a chance anything has worked its way loose? Not just with timing but rest of cylinder bolts etc? Is the engine turning over?
Hey Beater! Cheers for the comment! OK, so you can't line up your timing sprocket with the head mark when your flywheel is lined up with the TDC mark? You may need to line the timing sprocket up, but loop the chain over a few links on the fly wheel so they both line up with their respective marks. Let us know how you get on!
@@Eli-tg5xz Great work buddy! Glad you got it sorted. Not quite sure what you mean on the adjusting bolt? But if your happy!! If you need any more help hit us up! You can send pictures, video etc to our insta, fb or tiktok
You might struggle to adjust the alignment of the flywheel itself as it should be in a set place on the crank shaft. Flywheel should have a top mark when the piston is at top dead center. Once you've lined that up you need to check the timing sprocket up at the valves, if that isn't aligned you'll be able to adjust there rather than at the flywheel, does that help/make sense?
Orite mate see today my bike cut and lost compression, got home and realise inlet tappet screw fell in head cylinder , but screw is damage , do I just need to replace this, doesn’t seem to be any damage to anything else And could this be reason I’ve lost compression? Cheers mate , bike only 4 week old so don’t think blown
Hey Connor! It sounds like the tightening nut on the adjustment screw worked itself loose. Did you find that in there as well as the screw? There is a possibility if the valve wasn't in the correct position that your piston face could be damaged from impacting the valve. Once the screw was bouncing around in the head it could have damaged the cam. Would be worth checking for any other scrapes, scratches or dents with a bright light, hopefully you'll be alright though. A loose valve will absolutely cause loss of compression. Fingers crossed a replacement screw solves it for you and you won't need to strip the top end! Let us know how you get on 👍
@@MoonshineNaughtyBoys thankfully yeah mate found both, and thankfully Only the screw was damaged , I also realised my clutch lwas too tight and I have some compression and air coming out exhaust, will replace tappet nut and screw, also I’m looking at piston now and all seems good still looks new , so that’s took worry away, I’m hoping it’ll be due to not having a tappet in atm Will replace and see what happens I’m hoping it was just a bad combination of tight clutch and no tappet screw will let u know , the piston slide is smooth and the piston looks good
The pit bike gods have been kind to you! 😂 Glad to hear the piston is ok and only minor damage! Not sure the clutch would have had much to do with it, but definitely worth sorting out. The adjuster locking nuts have come loose on ours a couple of times (usually after we'd been messing around with them!). Hopefully that'll be the only cause of your compression loss and a fairly easy fix 🤞
@@MoonshineNaughtyBoys well that’s why I’m sure it’s that mate , previous night I adjusted tappet and probably never tightened correctly , bike was running amazing until popped out and lost compression instantly , worse case I’ll replace engine

Hi man, great vid, one question for a new pit bike owner. I was retarding the pickup and spun the flywheel by hand a few times to check the distance. Does this mean I have messed the timing up? Best solution? Can I simply remove flywheel and replace it back on at tdc when sprocket is at 9pm? Then go through 2 full rotations checking after 1 rotation that it's at 3pm and after 2 that it's back at 9pm? I fear I have clocked the timing up completely by rotating the flywheel 😩 please tell me I haven't and that it's fine
Hi Jason, glad you enjoyed the video. We've got a longer up on the main channel going through timing which may be helpful. Were you trying to get more pops out your exhaust? 😁 I doubt you will have done any permanent or expensive damage. If the timing is off, just make sure you don't run it as you could smash the valves into the piston. The flywheel itself will generally only lock in one position on the shaft, the timing adjustments should be done with the timing chain on the sprocket on the side of the head. Does that make sense? As long as the timing marks on the flywheel and head sprocket line up at the same time and then again after two full rotations of the flywheel, you should be golden! Hope that helps bud! Let us know how you get on.
