    some one may have said this but you could cut the brand name sticky notes in half to use them horizontally with the sticky note on the side. (1.5 x 3 inches) I added a 4th goal to my kaban for setting an AM/PM routines and meal plan for each week in the quarter. (not doing it and I'm floundering.) 1st goal is writing based, 2nd is decluttering, 3rd is online presence, & now 4 health/wellness.

    I found your kanban board videos last year, and I've found them so helpful. I'm an actor, and making things (whether goals or anything else, really) visible is key, so I don't ignore those things. Like you, things have been really tough during isolation, but this is inspiring me to dig out my kanban board and get it into action again. Also, I've been following your readings on the other channel, and it's been wonderful having something to look forward to every day! Thank you so much for that, it's been much appreciated right now.

Letting you know I don't even use post its. all of my stuff is color -coded with specific washi tape so I use white pieces of paper (I have an abundance of extra notepad sheets from a promo) and tape them up with a piece of the coordinating washi tape. Also, this channel deserves more subscribers and more of these motivational videos, especially in writing themes specifically like you used to do in the beginning. Partly inspired by you i finally uploaded my book TODAY. It is non-fictional, a bit experimental and under a pseudonym but a milestone to me! Sarra, thank you so much for being willing to be vulnerable and show us how you're having to adapt to the unexpected things that crop up in life. So often, online teachers seem to either have incredibly uncomplicated lives or to pretend everything always goes smoothly all the time, as long as you follow their advice. I love that you're so real. It makes me feel like I can do this too! And you give great ideas for how to switch things up. So appreciated.
    Also, I wish 3M would make more colors of stickies in more sizes too. (For example, I'd love a collection of earth tones in the small size.) I've been queen of the sticky notes ever since my stroke a few years back because they help me stay on track with so many things. Just having a visible, tangible iteration of my intentions is so helpful. But the limitations on available colors make me sad. and sometimes I, too, escape to the off-brands just to switch things up a bit, and sometimes their adhesive really does let me down. Pro tip I've discovered: Elmer's repositionable glue sticks are great for reinforcing the stick when those off brands aren't so great. And it's quicker and easier to run a glue stick over the back than it is to rewrite the notes. Just make sure you get the repositionable kind.

    Who’s awesome? Sarra is! Love the video.
    I use the GTD methodology by David Allen, and the system you’ve created Sarra is foundational. One of the reasons I love it is because it doesn’t matter what “tools” are used, results are based on the concept of the system.
    I set my system similar. I have my quarterly goals in a 8.5 x 11 binder. I use a notebook to plan my week, and a folded piece of graph paper on my desk to work through my daily tasks.
    My kanban board is a manila file folder for each goal that gets filed away. I put the 1st 30 days of post its on the month calendar of my goals binder, and pull them off weekly to add to my weekly notebook.
    When the task is complete, I put it on the “done” side of the manila folder. The ones that I don’t get done, go back on the monthly calendar and I plan them into “buffer” days. . . unless it’s a sequential task, then I make sure it gets planned for ASAP.
    Side note - I run a piece of washi tape the length of the folder, over top the post its, to help secure them down.
    The bottom, I’m getting things done that are advancing me toward my life vision. Thank you!

    Fantastic, much needed video. I kept backing it up to listen again to things that resonated. Video plus planning out my week on Sunday meant when I looked at the "What deadlines do I have coming up?" question, instead of thinking None, like I usually do - because deadlines are for nonfiction articles and ghostwriting, neither of which are the dream and therefore not part of the Quarterly goals - and the writing and marketing just get done, I thought Why not set some? Really, that shouldn't have been a revelation. But with quarantine messing with productivity and making me feel like I'm floating in fog? It's major! Thank you!

    • @monetruby
      @monetruby Před 4 lety +1

      Pamela, in case this might help-when I haven't had room for a larger kanban board, I've used cardstock to make one. I started with a package of cardstock from the Dollar Store, and it was on the smaller size-maybe just a little larger than an 8.5 x 11 inch piece of paper. Craft stores will also have larger sizes on hand, if you need something bigger. It's kind of nice using a smaller piece-less pressure to make big or complicated goals! Plus, it's pretty cheap, so you can experiment with how you want to set it up without breaking the bank. Hope this helps!

    • @HeartBreathings
      @HeartBreathings  Před 4 lety +6

      Some people have done theirs on those tri-fold presentation boards where you can pull it out when you're working and fold it up and put it behind or under a piece of furniture or in the closet when you aren't using it! You could also do one in a notebook where you have one page that has all the "to do" stickies that you move to a "doing" page and then finally to a "done" page in the notebook. Another idea is to split your goals to where they each have their own smaller boards.

I was on a medication that was helping me with postpartum (it's been over a year so I don't know if it's still postpartum but I started the meds to help with it), but the side effects were really bad for planning. This video is honestly SO relevant to me right now. I did almost nothing that I planned in April and was feeling really down about the board since it's my first time trying it and I was like should I even continue? But the idea to have goals on monthly basis and not add new ones might actually help with it a lot! I was prioritizing my mental health a lot this month. Nothing got done but I have managed to stay in a very healthy mindset and actually got pretty good at stoping downward spirals which is a first for me so I don't think April was a total failure. Hey Sarra! Thank you for this video, it's really helpful and inspiring to see how different people are planning differently during COVID-19. As a fellow extrovert and fellow creative, I did want to request...could you do a video about coping as a creative extrovert during this - n other words, how do you stay inspired and stay creative when you're an extrovert stuck inside??? I'm struggling so much! I WANT to be creative, but without the ability to see friends or go sit at a cafe or bookstore, I'm finding it difficult to get myself fired up about my projects... I'd love to hear your thoughts on that at some point.

    Could you use the big purple post-it notes and cut them in half? Or would that be too small?

    Since nano camp is almost over (although I’m still going to be working on my book since I decided on a doable word count of 30K), during your Q&A could you address how long you usually wait before going back to edit your book. I know the Witches Key was done immediately. Also I’m already planning on a book 2. Should that draft wait until book 1 edits are done since things can change? Thanks!

    Quick question, is there a certain way you set up your Amazon ads for your books? Like a certain daily budget? Really struggling with my Amazon ads

    Is it just me or is anyone else noticing that Sarra's "go away I'm reading sign" is the wrong way (backwards) in the beginning of the video?

    Is it *reasonable* to KanBan in monthly, 6-week, or 2-month sets instead of three months? I keep getting slammed by life events which are totally out of my control, and failing at achieving the last half to third of my goals.

      You're not failing. You didn't neglect your goals, even if not 1 task you planned to do got completed. You tried and have a vision. You CAN make it happen!
      And yes, it's reasonable, and no it's not. You get to determine how long a sprint runs for. This quarter, I planned for 3 months, but honestly, I'm taking it 1 week at a time. That's how far I can reasonable plan for and keep focus on without feeling overwhelmed.

      Yes!! I think you can make it with for whatever increment if time feels good to you right now. Sometimes the best way to learn what works is to give it a try and see. Tweak it again until it feels good or clicks for you. It's hard when you don't feel like you're moving forward, but sometimes we need to just let go and embrace the season of life we are in. If you need to be flexible, just plan a week or two at a time and start there!

      Oh, I didn't realize I sounded like I had short breathing. If I do, it's from being overweight, I guess.
