Prince - Vocals, songwriting, stage presence, great concepts e.g. albums creating eras, fashion, looks, self recording/producing, and this is where Prince wins, Prince is a virtuoso plays basically all instruments available and more than beast at each instruments like Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums etc… more than Pro fissionable at each of those and master of his voice!!!

Idk. Some of the eq-ing on rince's music is downright bad. Really hard to listen to.
He was a better musician if you consider that being able to play a wide variety of instruments. Mike was in a whole nother league as a song writer though, not factoring in dancing and entertaining. Prince also benefitted more from pushing androgeny in a addition to racial ambiguity which they both benefitted from.
Where Mike wins to me a s musical mind is that his music stands the test of time far better where a small amount of Prince's music is even listenable to me as someone who didn't grow up in their prime eras.

For some reason, I believe they are both extremely talented. Sorry for my amateur knowledge about music, but I believe they are equal. One’s a child prodigy who learned to dance on his own, and grew up to be one of the most amazing singers ever, using lots and lots of emotion and a powerful voice. He also can beatbox, and help produce great songs. He also is awesome in military-styled costumes. Another grew up to be bold, but sexy, and grew up to do a lot by himself. He also became an amazing singer, and reaching his emotions into a crowd, grabbing many women’s hearts with his splits and brave style. He lets off an impressive vocal range, too. They both have beautiful powerful vocal ranges, full of emotions.
And what makes these artists both legendary, unlike today’s artists, they both don’t always sound emotionless, or weird.

Michael Jackson was better because people cared about him more. I adore Prince. He was a phenomenon. But he wasn't the King of Pop. He was a highly influential singer who will go down as a legend. But there has yet to be one pop singer who even approaches Michael's legacy. He had hit after hit after hit. Prince had plenty of hits but no where near Michael. I get it Anthony, you're approaching this question from the perspective of someone who lives and breathes music and from there I could see why you would choose Prince, he is the better musician. But music isn't simply about technical ability. Michael's skill was the ability to bring in everybody, no matter who they were, to groove to his music. I've talked to hardcore racists who couldn't help but sing along and dance to his music. It's so infectious, so joyous you can't help but like it.
Prince has a lot of great music but a lot of it sounds very dated. Michael's music sounds timeless.

There's a lot of stigma around MJ that still lingers today for people who are younger and didn't grow up with his music: the child molestation allegations, his feminine voice/characteristics, and the overall craziness. I'm 22 and all I knew about MJ growing up were the negatives up until his death, it's all you heard about and he was the butt of a lot jokes.
I'm not arguing whether he's better than Prince or not, but I think people should go out of their way to actually listen to MJ's music. Even Off the Wall, which was a huge album in its own right, gets overshadowed constantly and a lot of younger people who may have at least heard Thriller or Bad, probably haven't heard Off the Wall, which to me and a lot of other fans, think it's his best work, and he was only 20 at the time. And before that, his older music like with Forever, Michael, is great.

I saw both artists live a number of times over 15 to 20 years and this is what i thought about them. MJ was amazing live in the 80's both singing and dancing. I never liked his backing vocalists, They seemed weak to me. I saw him again in the 90's Dangerous tour and i thought i was watching the exact same show i watched years ago. Apart from some new songs it was the same dance routines and same postures. I saw Prince live in the 80's and thought he was incredible. His band and backing vocalists were so tight and great. His songs sounded different from the recording but actually better. I saw him again in the 90's and in 2014 and he would always rework his songs and they always sounded fresh. On top of that vocally live i always though Prince sounded much better and always more on the note than MJ. Prince didn't need to dance and yet captivated a crowd as much as MJ did dancing. MJ with recorded songs was obviously more successful and maybe more consistent, but i never thought of Prince as a chart artist like MJ was. I know it may sound like i'm biased towards Prince but for me the true test is what someone is like live and if i had a choice to watch 1 of them it would be Prince but on the record side i can't separate them. They were so different in content and style its crazy really to compare. I'm just glad i saw both in my lifetime!!

Great take Anthony, to me it's pretty easy.
    Prince > MJ
Prince wrote, played and produced the vast majority of his music, was extremely prolific (8 fantastic albums in 7 years) and was a stellar performer. Each album he stretched out further with his musical abilities (playing with Miles Davis and Madhouse etc). Not to mention the fact that he was an extremely underrated guitar player, could shift genres on a dime and was always stretching live in new exciting ways. I could easily see the argument for him being the most important pop musical artist of the last 35 years (I see his influence on artists from Janelle Monae to Muse).
MJ was an excellent live performer, very charismatic and had a string of awesome albums (the Quincy Jones produced era) but for sheer artistry and music that will live on, IMO it is unquestionably Prince.
Purple Rain, Sign O' The Times, 1999, Parade, Dirty Mind, Around The World In A Day, Controversy & Prince...all before he was 30.

Ehh I have to disagree, especially about whose sheer artistry and music will live on more, but I respect your opinion. I do believe Prince was a better musician in the technical stance as he could play a variety of instruments, but I don't think his music holds up as well. Michael's music was simpler, but it made a stronger impact. At the end of the day, people reference Beat It, Thriller, and Billie Jean far more than Purple Rain, 1999, and Sign O' the Times.
And people sleep on MJ's own ingenuity all the time and reduce him to just "another pop star" which may be because of so many recycled pop artists trying so hard to be like him that we forget what a pioneer Michael was in his day. There weren't many pop singers at the time writing songs about groupies (in a bittersweet but leaning towards a negative stance), gang violence, pressure from the media, or criminals inspired by 1930s gangsters.

This comparison always for me is the hardest to make a clear decision. Because I am a fan of both. And dug deeply into both artists music and personality by watching a lot of their interviews and reading their old write-ups. Prince was clearly more musical. When it comes to instrumentation and experimentation with different sounds, styles, and ETC. But what Michael Jackson couldn't do with instrumentation he did with his vocals and cleaned majority lyrics and simplified his style specifically so he could appeal globally; he touched on that in interviews. To people that didn't understand English but could understand rhythm. So with the understanding of both artists intentions. I think they were on different parallels going in a slightly different direction. Prince was more so into the art for the sake of the art. Michael Jackson had intentions to truly bring people to gather with his music. He knew he couldn't make it too artsy and too complex or it wouldn't translate effectively or as catchy, even though he had his artsy pieces. I do not think he was as artsy and complex as Prince could be. Cause Globally awareness and just numbers, Michael crushes Prince when it comes to just the pure reach (l know you acknowledged that earlier in the video.) But Prince's influence on actual artists and the music community is staggering as well. So I can see why you went with Prince.

Shadow So Prince was more musical, but it was MJ who communicated through music and rhythm...? Is it? Do you get you contradict yourself seriously? To create a musical language that reaches out to ppl regardless of culture, language, age, sex takes a VERY musical and VERY artistic person. MJs wisdom and knowledge on humanity in general obviously enormous. How many artists do you know, who created a global artistic language? Fantano went w/ Prince b/c he thinks MJ was weirder. As if he knew him, as if the media didn't creat a fake persoanlity around MJ (for obvious reasons), as if weirdness has anything to do w/ artistic imput, as if artists were "normal, average ppl" in general... And MJs influence isn't restricted to performing, either. His influence reaches beyond music. Just check the exhibition on MJs influence on visual arts.

I love both artists for different reasons. They both put out a lot of material I personally did not like as well as a lot of songs that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

    Michael Jackson > Prince
Prince as an individual was extremely talented as he played multiple instruments, wrote, produced and recorded virtually everything himself, but he made a lot of songs that I just never cared for. MJ on the other hand, both as a solo artist and with The Jackson 5 had so many quality songs that are memorable and easy to like. The songs Michael himself wrote were up to bar with the songs he didn't write + he's by far the best dancer of the two. In terms of vocal ability/range they are pretty even, but I prefer the sound of Michael's voice overall.

Ngl, people who tell MJ is better than Prince, just take the moment to at least watch a concert or a live performance of Prince. Maybe, if you feel it after that, you will take the courage to hear 3 or 4 Prince albums, and you will take in count how most of the work of Prince is incredible and perfection "on his own way". I respect and love both MJ and Prince's music, but MJ took way more consideration on how to promote his music than Prince ever did, that's why he has more recognition as an artist (and a little bit overrated as an "artist", he was a great singer and one of the best performance the world have ever seen, but it doesnt chance the fact that most of his 80's music was so great due to Quincy, Temperton and Toto's touch, not entirely because of MJ as the people think).

@brittany lee spencer and they both Paul and Prince were right, they both had the gusts to confront the biggest dictator in the system and they both paid for it. BTW I ask you to quote an music expert to back up your claims, you came back with recording artists names, some friends some colleges. If you don't know what your talking about, why lie?

@brittany lee spencer you see? nothing to proof your claims, like every MJ fanatic JUST INVADE YOU TUBE VIDEOS WITH MONEY COMMENTS, like if marketing and quality were related. It is easy to talk but not to debate, this is a channel of a music critic expert, not Billboard magazine, go back to Mj videos to praise blindly with numbers, stop harassing people who have opinions.

Prince was objectively the greatest of all time in modern popular music. Regardless of how much you personally like him. Quite simply, he could do everything all the other "greatests of all time" could do. But none of the other "greatests of all time" could everything he could do. Not The Beatles, not James Brown, not Bowie, not MJ. None of them. Whether you like how he did it is subjective, but his abilities surpassed everyone else's. So, there.

    • @SwingRiots
      @SwingRiots Před 3 lety +2

@@_PuppetMaster86 Nope. As I said in the post, Prince's singular abilities outstripped them all. He could do everything they could do to a world class standard, but absolutely nobody could do everything he could do. That's just a fact. That's not to take away from any of the other artists, and it doesn't mean he was necessarily the very best at each individual thing, and it doesn't mean he is to everyone's tastes, but the objective standard he did it all at is unprecedented. I'm happy to demonstrate specifics on the understanding that objectivity means that our personal like and dislike of individual projects is irrelevant. He did literally everything a modern artist could feasibly do.
(Also, Michael broke down MTV barriers because of pressure from the label. That doesn't take away from the achievement, but pointing that out implies he did it through sheer talent. He didn't. And even if he did, that doesn't impact on anything I said in the slightest.)
