DISCUSSION | Calls for government to review decision not to renew Zim exemption permits

  • The government is vigorously defending its Zimbabwean permit decision.
But there are rising calls for home affairs to rethink its decision not to extend Zimbabwe Exemption Permits. South Africa has granted exemptions to Zimbabweans living here for more than 13 years under various schemes.
But now about 180 0000 Zimbabweans will have to find alternative ways to legitimize their stay or go home in December. The Helen Suzman Foundation is challenging the decision in court. And Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has hit back at the foundation saying it gives people false hope.
To discuss we're joined by Mercy Dube who is a Zimbabwean national who came to South Africa in 2018. And Dr Vusumuzi Sibanda is the Chair of the African Diaspora Forum.
