Music Maestro Ilaiyaraaja at Radio Mirchi Chennai Studios!

- Mirchi Chennai celebrated 2013's "World Music Day" befitting its association with music by getting listeners to meet with the very evasive music maestro Isaignani Ilayaraja. The culmination of month long celebration of Maestro's music got triggered on June 2nd with his birthday to reach the penultimate on 21st with listeners getting to celebrate with Maestro himself. "Isai Rajavin Ilaya Rasigan" contest was conducted on air for the month to shortlist find the most ardent fan of Mr. Raja. The selected winners from Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Vijayawada, Vishakapatinam, Hyderabad and Thiruvananthapuram got to meet and interact with Raja sir on 21st of June 2013. This wonderful event was a dream come true for many listeners who revere the musician and his compositions.

As much as i love his music and his talent...i would like to criticise him on certain things too. Pity that girl who asked him just to say her name...what is stopping him in just to say her name? Just say Kannama or sing the first line of his song Kannama...that would made her happy . He is a legend but at times he has to understand how others feels too.
Hmm....YES, if he was your average celebrity! But he is not. He never answers any of the questions straight-forward because, in my opinion, he talks just LIKE the way he composes music. Straight from his heart, no sugar-coating, no mincing words, no flattery etc.....Hard to digest for several people who are used to listening to manipulated, well-prepared speeches or prepared answers. She, like many of us, loves his music. But that pestering him to sing her name was pretty childish and very fanatical.
@@BC999 It was a simple request. He could have accommodated. He didn't. He is an awesome composer. There is simply no parallel to his talent. His singing is divine, honest, simple, and humble. Yet, when he speaks, he somehow comes across as unnecessarily arrogant and self-focused for a person claiming to be spiritual. May be he is ticked off that the world is not trying hard enough to understand him, and therefore he feels it is worthless responding to its questions. But, this was missed opportunity in being human.
@Siva Pichay: I agree with you completely. I felt so bad for that lady who made a simple request. He could have given her a lifetime of joy by saying that one word, "kannamma". Without doubt, Sri Ilayaraja is one of the greatest composers of all time. But his capacity to empathize with his words and actions is sadly lacking. I do not know if he did not understand, or did not feel comfortable, or felt that he need not agree to a request. He will routinely not answer anything in a straight-forward manner. It is not obvious why that is so.

Addressing a woman (a total stranger) as "Kannamma" is a VERY personal thing, especially for a 60+ year old man hailing from a village. If you cannot understand something that very simple, any more comment from you is pointless.
@@BC999 Chill. No reason to get worked up. This is simply a forum for exchanging views, and we can do that in a civil manner, and be the better for it. The whole point of an exchange is that we see all see the world differently. So, it becomes pointless only if we all agree and parrot the same line! We can disagree, just that we do that in a dignified manner. I have made it amply clear in many of my posts that I am a fan of Sri Ilayaraja's immense talent and his immeasurable contribution to music in general. However, I am not a member of the Ilayaraja cult society. So, I have no trouble separating the musician from the person. That lady was making a simple request because she felt that his songs are a substitute for her mother, and that is why she requested him for that word. He could have accommodated, but did not. Having said that, I respect your view that he could have been uncomfortable. That could explain his non-action action.

With age one attains patience and humility .......but with all due respects to Raja Sir ...i am amazed why Raja sir considers himself as though no one is equal to him ...only he is great ....not good to have this much Headweight
I think ilayaraja is being too proud when somebody tells him that anybody can compose songs and few can match him in bgm.
AND he has the right and ample credentials to walk tall and proud with his BG scores alone (even if you set aside his 1000's of soul-brimming songs)!!!!!!
@@BC999 There is never a reason to be proud. Others should praise, but one should always keep in mind that there are many many people and circumstances that make one get the awards and accolades. Without the hundreds of film directors, producers, thousands of musicians, the composers before him, the singers, and people who gave him the breaks and the life-experiences, he would not be able to do what he was able to do. Does he have extraordinary talent? Yes indeed. But, he is not an island. Pride comes before fall. That is the reason for his downfall in film music. He is known to treat directors, singers, musicians and others not-so-well. So, when someone of the caliber of A R Rahman came along, the industry simply flipped the switch. The reason? Pride and anger.

@@BC999 I am huge fan of Raja sir. He is one of the greatest composers of all time (not just film music, not just Indian film). His musical talent is extraordinary beyond description or criticism. I don't just like his music, I absolutely love it. I did not grow up listening to ARR, and while I think he is very good and is an incredibly humble person for his achievements, my feelings for ARR sir's music is not quite the same as Raja sir's. My observation was not about the music. In any case, it is our privilege that we have a treasure like Raja Sir. Peace, brother/sister!

Rahman worked under Raja Sir as a key board player for over 400 movies.
I am a diehard of raja sir since 1980. But I find it puzzling that he does not like somebody pointing out that his BGM is superior and thinks that his songs scores are being looked down upon.
Unfortunately, that is his nature. Very proud, and very prickly.
IR questioned the National Award jury in 2009 as to WHY they bifurcated the award into 2 categories (1 for songs and 1 for Background score). As a result, he DID NOT GO to New Delhi to collect his 2009 & 2016 National Awards for Best Background score. That's ILAYARAJA. FEARLESS, non-budging, STRAIGHT-forward. NOT like your average FAKE-faced celebrity who would have told the lady "Kannammaaaa" (:-P) and gone to Delhi smiling with all their teeth, to collect whatever nonsense they give.
Ilaiyaraja is indeed a god...a god of arrogancy.....
