Can confirm that the Jetstream SXR-200 refills fit perfectly in this pen.
There is also a Hi-Tec-C refill called the LHRF-20C4 (available on jetpens) that fits. It is a 0.4mm refill and the tip is superb just like other Hi-Tec-C pens.

  • @cytherians
    @cytherians Před 4 lety +9

A lot of references to the rOtring Trio prior to this multi-pen, but there was a rOtring 600 even before that which looks nearly exactly like this with knurled grip. It's definitely less "engineered" than it was before. They definitely took a cheaper route with construction, although it still looks to be a pretty solid multi-pen. But one major disappointment for me: the "3" is "2+1"... 2 ballpoints plus 1 pencil. Why force this restriction? They should make each slot capable of housing a pencil. This way it would be possible if someone wants to install a 0.3 mm, 0.5 mm, and 0.7 mm instead of D1 ballpoint refills.

Good review. Ironically I understand why they chose not to have a blue in there as you in the German-speaking building/construction industry rarely use blue. Black and red are for marking up drawings or for note-making at meetings and the pencil is for sketching. I have to date not used the eraser in my Rotring pencils as it freaks me out how little eraser there is space for. The only pencil I think has enough eraser in it is the Faber castell grip plus. If you use a Rotring daily, you would not use its tiny eraser at the end. It would last a day max.
This one goes straight onto my wishlist for Christmas :)

I just got a rOtring 600 3-in-1 and the mechanism feels _significantly_ stiffer than the 800. Somewhat unpleasant to use. Is that just the way it is or does yours have a relatively smooth action?

  • @aTillasSister

I have an old Rotring Trio, and discovered that getting refills for it was pretty hard. Some would just fall out due to being too narrow. Others would not retract back into the pen due to the tip being slightly too wide. Even newly purchased rOtring own brand refills were not a great fit. I tried a Zebra gel D1 as a last resort and that was actually the best fit. However I wanted to try an Ohto needlepoint.
It turns out you can cheat and nobody will know! Put the refill into the tube holder and then tape over it with scotch tape.
The other downsides of the old Trio design are, it's very smooth and slippery due to absence of knurling, and the grip unscrews all the time.
This new rOtring 600 3 in 1 looks like it will adress both of these issues with its glued on knurled grip. Thanks for the review!

Jiminy no eraser for $50. Was excited about this but it woulnt replace my beloved edc Skilcraft B3 Aviator with no eraser. It does look solidly built though. So I imagine it would hold up to some hard use like as a construction work pen/pencil, which is what my B3 gets used for a bunch. If you could put a .07mm pencil insert in it, it might just be worth it for the extra assumed durability of the pen body and the more durable lead thickness for an all around hearty edc multipen.

This will depend on condition and the version you have. Typical prices are $100 to $400 I’d say, with $400 being mint w box and materials.

It's a cool pen and I love the Rotring 600 series.....bit I think it's a shame they didn't leave the mechanism the same as the old Newton/600 Trio
I just watched a video on it and its gravity deployment and then twist to retract mechanism is way cooler than this
Feels like they cheaped out with this version when they could have revived a legend

This 3 in 2 pen is really great! and amazing! but I still wander why that great german pen company decided to release such a good pen in Japan first! in that very hard and though japanese market! rather than on the really huge and more flexible american market! but americans could still get this very good and fine pen from some American internet special sellers! though!

That twist mechanism is probably a Japanese patent so Rring is paying a license fee for the technology.

    • @unsharpen

Maybe. My guess was the the gravity mechanism was expensive or just prone to breaking, but I have no idea on the true answer!

I’m used to single pens instead of a multifunctional pen for EDC. So this would be better.
But I’ve tried to use Rotring Rapid Pro once, I think it’s better that the iconic Rotring 600. But in Thailand, it has been sold out in every stores now. There are just Rotring Tikky and Rotring 600 3 in 1 and pencils. 🥲

I would definitely discourage anyone from spending large sums of money on the original 600 Multipen or Newton Trio. My 600 Multipen (knurled) locked up and would no longer function shortly after I purchased it. rOtring offered to repair it and after several weeks in Germany, they notified me it couldn't be repaired and sent me the Newton Trio as a replacement. It worked for a little while (I don't recall how long, this was in 1997) the release cylinder ceased to work and to this day I have to push in and twist the plunger cap over and over and over again until I manage to get purchase with it and release the extended D1.
That pen was my worst experience with rOtring (fortunately/unfortunately). The next most disappointing was the Quatro Data Pen, I believe I purchased it in 2001. It still functions properly, but not well. It was never as smooth or easy to use as the original rOtring Trio (the smooth cylindrical gravity assisted model).
Now, that Trio has been with me since October, 1996 and aside from the slight difficulty of finding true rOtring D1 refills, still works like a champ!

Worst mechanical pencil I have ever owned. Twist mechanism jams, because spring in mechanical pencil doesn't stay in place.
