- Loreena McKennitt's Bonny Portmore with lyrics. I do not own this song, only the creation of the video. Loreena McKennitt owns this song.

Beautiful song, but negative comments are also welcome. - Hudba
"I hope you found peace my friend."
RIP Connor MacLeod
Iconic - The original Highlander!
Aye. Duncan truly did see this man, Connor, as both his brother and best friend. Taking him home to be with Heather was act of love that only another immortal could even begin to understand.
I'm getting sensitive in my old age. I'm tearing up over a fallen tree here.
There's, er, more to it than a tree.......
Signifies sooo much more
I understand what you mean. I have a 43 yr. old oak that a fungus killed and we had to cut it down, we only cut the top dead portion and kept the other half to put bird houses and petches for a feral kitty family. I named the tree Bonny Portmore😭😭
@@marylyons9257 Nice of you to leave something for the animals. The line that gets me is "all the birds n the forest, they bitterly weep. It makes me think of the consequences of deforestation and those who suffer because of it.
@@iamnoone6118 yeah, that verse about the birds weeping and questioning got to me, 😢
"Bonny Portmore" is an Irish traditional folk song which laments the demise of Ireland's old oak forests, specifically The Great Oak of Portmore, which fell in a windstorm in 1760 and was subsequently used for shipbuilding and other purposes.
thank you for this info. I was wondering what the song was about.
Thank You for adding this bit of info, I was going to do it if no one else had. It is such a poignant song that even those who don’t know the history of the song should at least pick up on the sadness of the event. Unfortunately, humans didn’t learn from “this woeful destruction”, we continue to destroy indiscriminately. 😪
Thank you for this man. Trully.
@@paigemoore3798 Thank you.
@marcellusTheGreen Thank you for your explanation without which i woudn't understand the song. Hope people learn to leave trees and animals live in peace and stop destruction of nature.
As being just human, this song and its music calls to my very soul. I wouldn't just limit it to its origin but to all on this Earth to hold it to their hearts.
“There can be only one”, this is exactly the kind of song I want to play at my funeral. If I’ll remember that is
Well on the plus side you're not the one that would have to remember
The best thing to come from Highlander 3. Such a great song.
I have loved this song since I first heard it but was unclear on certain lyrics. Thank you for them. Even without understanding all the lyrics the song is powerful and soulful and this was absolutely breathtaking
This song is beautiful and it was used brilliantly in highlander, when the series ended this song was used when we saw many points if Duncan's life from 400 years to the present. Great way if not sad way to end the series. Forever highlander.
what a great show that was
It was much better used in the 1986 film with christopher Lambert as Conner MacLeod, the tv series has nothing on the films, if you have never watched I would advise watching
@@darklydevine2983 ,
In the first film, you had a Frenchman play a Scots ( Lambert as Conor MacLeod ) and a Scotsman play a Spaniard ( Sean Connery as Ramirez ) !
The series was a far better improvement with Adrian Paul who:
1) Is actually Scots
And
2) Is a bona fide martial artist in the art of Choy Li Fit as well as Hung Gar.
Plus studied for many years prior to taking the role as a personal interest of his various sword fighting styles.
With that to say....even the writing had a chance to be consistent with character development.
By far...
The series was way BETTER.
So he did all his fight scenes
@@gavinst.clairthedefiningmo9985 nope, original was better by far, the emotion and the character play was brilliant, so what if they had people play roles that were not of their country of origin, thats called acting!!! its a period actiom film, it didnt matter it does have to be accurate. secondly just because the people had skill in martial arts it definetly doesnt make the quality of the proformance better. also, if you actual follow the fact they are immortals from a different world fighting a battle on earth the characters niether of them are meant to be of earthly decent, they just were sent to earths to particular places, by the way the celts which highlander is based on are a race from austria, where they departed and took up regions in anatolia, britain, i.e. insular celts, gaul in france and boheimia meaning poland, so a french celt highlander would be possible
This song gives me chills. Such emotion.
I absolutely love this song! The history on Bonny Portmore is very sad.
Highlander brought me here
How could anyone not feel something down on the inside when listening to this song it moves my very soul😢
I still sob when I listen to this..
Outstanding!
This my favourite songs, very thanks for sharing
A hauntingly beautiful and powerful classic.
So soulful, deep, haunting and temporal. It's hard to describe the feelings that it stirs.
This song makes me long for Scotland. My heritage is from there. I have never been but some how this song makes me miss a place I have never been. It also hints at if I were finally there I could find peace. Just amazing how a song can do all that. Especially in world where peace seems to be disappearing. I long for a world where we all live in peace. We take care of our families and live our lives free of hatred and discourse. When you hear this song it is almost like if you close your eyes you go to that place where there is no hatred and that feeling of peace over takes you.
I am completely undone by this song, every single time.
OH MY GOSH THANK YOU! Liked. Clearly the 1 person who did not like this doesn't have a soul.
The single greatest piece of music I've ever heard-I weep
Love the music. Great music. Thanks for sharing the beautiful music.
Love this touches the depths of your soul
💖💖💖💖💖
I think this is one of her most beautiful songs. Thanks... :-)
This song is so beautiful I love how it hits the depths of my soul
This is so beautiful. Its one of those songs i could fall asleep to. BEAUTIFUL!!!
Thank you for these lyrics. I've loved this song since it was featured in one of the Highlander films but was a little unsure of some of the words. I cant imagine anyone but Loreena singing this, she has such a pure bell-like clarity to her voice.
I've always loves this beautiful song
just so powerful reaching to spirit and heart of every highlander for what was lost and may never be regained
+grioghair macgrioghair For every tree and habitat we have destroyed.
Shows poor environmental stewardship isn't just a modern phenoinon Scott. The use of anthropomorphism to give the birds a human voice was an effective literary device. I have always loved birds and this song tugged at my heart. What a sweet voice and mournful tune.
Beautiful song , I've always loved it, for some reason it make feel at peace and some what sad at the same time.
But I do love this song and your voice is so beautiful.
The use of this song in highlander was well placed.
Hauntingly beautiful. Thank you for this.
Such a beautiful voice and a wonderfully authentic traditional song - Rodge - a former Sugawn Folk.
One of the most BEAUTIFUL songs EVER written. . .
Back in 1995, Lise Beaule (from Montreal) introduced me to this song. I bought the CD and still have the CD and I still listen to this song (date: June 2020).
This song is so deep and beautiful
Linda música, linda voz.
There can be only one!
Was having a dispute w a fellow highlander fan on a couple of the words in this song. Glad someone posted it w Lyrics so I had backup..lol Thanks ;-) This was used both in the orig movie and the series. It's a lovely song and was very appropriate for the Highlanders, both Connor and Duncan!
I found the works of this singer after I did a search for the songs of the TV show Highlander. Boy did the makers of the movies sure screwed up the second movie. The show was fantastic and Worth watching if only to find out about Loreena Mckenitt. Per CelticPrincess11's note Loreena sure does own this song. It's so hauntingly beautiful that it's hard to believe it could be connected or inspired by the deforesting of Scotland.
Absolutely Beautiful...❤️...As Always
Bonnie Portmore did make the scene in Highlander.
I don't know why but I feel that this folk song, this melody connects me with some forgotten history. It is so familiar but yet so distant... hm... I don't know.
SAME HERE , SAME HERE !!!
Same here guy's.
15 dislikes? How could you not love this?
Ireland...I love you...
Not Scotland? It's about Scotland and what the English did to the forests there. Ok, I'm wrong, sort of. It's a mix of both lands depending on the lyrics used.
This is from Hong Kong ; every time I hear this song. I cry.
So beautiful, what a timeless song.
love Love LOVE this song!!!! Thank you 💜
an extremely moving song i first heard this on highlander . my favourite film
Beautiful..best voice feminine since Enya !!
There just had to be one moron who thumbed this beautiful song down. Loreena Mckennitt you have a voice like an angel
what a voice on this woman..brava!
This music talks to world's soul, any country, any person. It evokes something whitin us, something lost . I alwasy liked Loreena's musics.
Thanks Celtic Princess i have been searching for this song for a long while and you just made my day
Thank you, lass.
My Grandfather bought the rights to this song from Loreena in 1983 for £83000 he said this should be shared with the world for many century's
Amazing song, very touching :)
An absolutely beautiful song by a fantastic lady - I have wanted to find the lyrics, and putting on this video was a great idea. Thank you. Clay
i like the song its sad but true. wish they still had the woods.
Thank you for doing a lyric video. It helps understand the song better. I've heard Loreena talk about it a bit
Thanks for the lyrics, there were some parts I was never sure about. :-)
It's a totally awesome song I love it loads
Hi nice video let's stay connected keep up the good work..
And in the end, Duncan brought Connor's body home and buried him next to his bonny Heather even after all those centuries. 😭
I love celticmusic and the beautyfull Ireland
Beautiful Music Beautiful Voice,,This Is Very Special Music TO ME
Beautiful
Thank you SO MUCH for that! I couldn't make a single word!!! ;)
Nice job! ;)
Cuando escucho ésta canción...cierro los ojos...y me imagino que soy un águila sobrevolando las cumbres de las montañas...es una sensación de paz total.
My god this has touched me so very much it’s like my assisters are talking to me....
Very nice Song
Loved it! Thank You. :) Reminds me of The Highlander: Conner McLeod Going though his paces reforging his sword again!
beautiful song
Oh god so amazing
Loved the song from the first time I heard it watching Highlander I thought who is this beautiful angelic voice that I could not get out of my head and such a beautiful song.
Maravilloso!!!! Celestial...
What is true then is true today. This brings sorrow to my mind. We bring great suffering to others and don't realize our blame. Nothing will last into eternity, but what we have today should benefit others as a sign of who we once were.
Loreena is Canadian and she and the birds are mourning the cutting of all the large old trees from Portmore to be sold for ship building. The birds homes are gone now, it says just exactly what she means.
Beautiful song. It's about Ireland.
If wanted to find this song since i heard it in a highlander episode. Awsome to finally know who sang it and what it's called!
I like it! Some times remeber me to be in a church.
she does say sighing instead of saying in the song !!!! But still a big thumbs up from me !!
We sang this song for choir one year
Loreena can transport you to a different time and place in a matter of notes.
soooo schöön
Even though the film left much to be desired, Highlander: The Final Dimension had several really great moments that keep me coming back to watch it time and time again. The montage of McCloud training in the mountains while this song plays is one of them. I hear this song was in the series too. Anyone know the episode?
The series finale " Not to Be ".
The song was used a a backdrop to the montage of clips showing Duncan's life throughout the centuries.
From HIS very own first death to the present.
Is that Highlander 6?
I mean "the source" was so god awful that I thought for sure they were done
It's probably the worst thing I've ever seen because it didn't just ruin a movie that I loved. It ruined an entire series
It was so fake and stupid that I knew they were going to kill Joe Dawson before they did because I knew they had to do something to make the audience emote and the horrible film itself was never going to do that
I think the only thing I've ever seen that came so close to disappointing me was Star Trek Percard and I believe they were actually trying to insult me with that show.
Yet somehow Highlander the source was just a little bit worse
My children are from The Clan McBride and they have red hair .l love this song her voice is very lovely💞 In the end there can only be one# Connor McCloud
Nae mi wee mauverneen !
Let it be....
Duncan MacLeod ! ! !
Aye
My Grandmother was a McCloud. The loss is tragic. We could replant them but it would never be the same.
Danke dir. Irische Eiche. 💖
Who came here from IP MAN?
I used to do karate when I saw the movie and listened to this for the first time ...100% calm pure soul from martial arts
This song is exceptional for all of ours friends and family who died in an epic battle and was assassinated by heartless inhuman beings.
"strong people as they say "
I've seen lyrics with both "saying' and 'sighing'. Either way, it's still a beautiful song.
You will be missed. R.I.P Sir Sean Connery a.k.a Juan Sanchez Villa Lobos Ramirez a.k.a the Spanish peacock
I loved this song in Highlander. I'm pretty sure Loreena McKennit wasn't the person that sung it there, but I could be wrong. Still, an awesome, awesome song.
песня красивая
yes it is sighing
This song is so deep and 😞!
She doesn't "own" the lyrics, they are from the seventeenth century.
Oh bah humbug. She "Owned" them like Connor "owned" The Kurgen. I simply can't imagine anyone being able to sing this song so beautifully as Loreena M.
Love
This song is also played throughout the movie Highlander 3 and is listed in the credits.
Watch the movie Highlander III when Conner forges his blade. THAT WILL tear you up from the scenery alone👍
I wonder if there is a small but significant mistake where you write about the birds 'Saying, "Where shall we shelter?"'. Listening creafully it sounds like Loreena is singing 'Sighing, "Where shall we shelter?"'. If that isn't what she is singing it should be - much more poetic.
That aside thanks very much for doing the text which brings out the sorrowful lyrics.
Pat
wheres the tissue, its been so long since i cried!
7 with heart.
There can be only one, Conner MacLeod, 1986 film with christopher Lambert, Highlander ( the original )
