Berlinski: Why Humans Are Unique in the World of Matter

  • Eminent paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould has argued that humans differ only in degree, not kind, from other organisms, and to think otherwise betrays an ancient and outdated prejudice. But does this match up with what science has revealed in the last century? On this ID The Future, we are pleased to share the first half of an engaging conversation between Dr. David Berlinski and host Eric Metaxas on the subject of Berlinski's recent book Human Nature. Some argue that humans are growing more peaceful, enlightened, and improved by the year, and that a coming technological singularity may well usher in utopia. Berlinski isn't buying it. "There is no society without its underlying ideology," he writes in Human Nature. A universal civilization requires a universal theory, and the prevailing grand narrative preferred by most materialist scientists today is fueled largely by Darwin's theory of evolution. But is the world of matter the only world that matters? In this conversation and in his book, Berlinski argues that human beings have a fundamental essence that is radically different from the essence of other organisms and that cannot be changed at will. It's a view that is supported by the latest evidence about life and the universe in biology, chemistry, physics, and even cosmology. And it represents a fatal flaw in the Darwinian story. This is Part 1 of a 2-part conversation. This interview originally aired as a Socrates in the City event in 2022. We are grateful to Eric Metaxas for permission to share it. Watch the conversation in video form on CZcams.

Mankind is the only species of which God said at our creation we are made in God's image.

Yes but we need scientific data for this modern age that worships science

I think Eric diminishes the importance of the interview by acting the comic too much.

1 John 5:10 Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. v11 And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. v12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Somewhat disappointed… I was expecting to gain some insight into human nature instead of elaborate detours into shortfalls of Darwinism. Not impressed with the whippings of a dead horse. Rather, as Christians we should focus on positive contributions like the following two questions: 1/ Has a Christian, or an atheist, ever attempted to define a human being holistically and put the definition to a scientific, empirical and experiential test? 2/ Does Christianity have a working definition of the image of God?
Here is my little contribution, beginning with the second question. Moral image of God is a ‘knowing good and evil likeness that is impervious to evil’. As for the fundamental essence of human nature, defined holistically: a human is ‘a spirit, soul and body being, consisting of eight distinct, fundamental dimensions that fully define all aspects of human life’. I will use two or three single word terms to identify each of the eight unique entities of human life.
    SOUL:
    1/ Cosciousness / Identity / Volition
    2/ Reason / Intellect / Logos
    3/ Feelings / Emotions /Habits
    BODY:
    4/ Anatomy / Body / Proprioception
    5/ Senses / Perception
    SPIRIT:
    6/ Values / Ethical / Moral
    7/ Awe / Wonder / Worship
    8/ Intuition / Instinct / Guidance

I don't know if Berlinski knows what he is saying. It's too much form and hardly any substance. Eric had to pull him back from the ledge by quoting a passage from his own (Berlinski's) book. The interview isn't very clear for the most part because Berlinski is out to spin and bamboozle Eric and his audience, IMHO. It's probably because Eric took too long for the intro and made some jokes about Berlinski.

Eric is an awful interviewer ... trying to hard to be a comedian, not asking questions of profundity ... Berlinski is on another plane, thankfully.
