Kind of true :) Hawaii ones are great!! I spent 3 years there and miss it everyday. As a outsider without any family its difficult to survive 80% or more of my paycheck went to rent, but the trade off is you get to live in Hawaii 🤷‍♀ I just never saw myself getting ahead there or being able to feel secure. To be fair on the mainland maybe its a false sense of security. If things go south are you better off on a island where you're self-sustained thru community or on the mainland where you have easier access to things but also 50x the population and a lot of potentially bad apples.

@@000000000BABY I've been out to Halawa a few times as well. When I worry about 1m people learning about the Halawa Valley, I try to remember that the plane heading into MKK is a 9-seater, there are no more short term rental permits on the island, and the residents literally chased a small cruise tour off the island. It is a hard place to get to, and not an easy place to visit with the wrong mindset - most people, if they figure out how to get there at all, will be one and done. OTOH, I worry more about what happens to the ranch; the valley has some natural protections, as you know.

The land doesn't actually belong to him. It would be like you finding a forest and calling it your own. The entity of which it belongs will one day make it clear and he will find himself in the same shoes as the rest of us. He will then hate himself, the way he hates us, for having to work for his land and home. He says in this video he "just walks his land every day to cherish the stories his elders have told." That's the scope of his contributions and work. His little "elder" speel he repeats over and over has only worked because the actual land owner is being patient. Did you notice he really did not want to answer the question about where he sleeps when Peter was seeking clarity if he sleeps in the bed he claimed was "his wife's". He lies and still tells people he sleeps in the tent, but that hasn't been the case. He is a fake and one day the entity that actually owns that land will take it back on record.

    • @raez7155

@@xiapong6277I would imagine his family has kuleana rights to the land. If they have maintained constant occupancy and continued to caretake and farm, they have real rights to the access, the land, the water just as the person who holds the deed. And if so it is "their" land legally just as much as the deed holder's. This explains why he would separate from his wife and move from Oahu to the valley prior to his father's death, to assume the kuleana. Hawai'i is a unique place with a unique history, and some unique quirks of land and tenancy law because of it.

Very selfless. I remember always helping neighbors and friends. Whether it be with their yards or giving salt or sugar for their cooking. Giving them a ride somewhere. Rural Hawaiians love people with good angels. They all do but because of haoles with demons the urban Hawaiians have some barriers. Find a local bar. They all have food and they bring the kids and when they loosen up they start to hula for each other. Hula is ONLY performative. They are taught young and they do it for each other for life.

Secrets die, sacred is shared. Peter you have the perfect personality, honesty, and humility to interview each and every personal cultural experience from an individual's perspective. You don't just showcase each person, you let us experience their lives, their hopes, their realities, their families, and neighbors. You can draw so much from one person that it makes me want to go there and live exactly as they do instead of take a vacation to a resort, whether it is in Appalachia, south side Chicago, deep desert Texas ranch, the reservations, or Moloka'i. The talent you have, and your wife in editing each episode so perfectly, is truly amazing! Saturday mornings are my mini vacation every week.

I highly recommend anyone who's visiting Hawaii look into Eco Tourism, as a way of giving back a little while also learning a lot about the plants, culture, and ecology of the island. When we were on Oahu we volunteered at the Botanical Gardens on the north shore for a day helping to root out invasive plant species while preserving the medicinal and native plants. It's also a great way to see parts of the island you normally wouldn't be able to get to as a normal tourist.

I love this guy and what he’s says is truth , just think how much happier we could be if we didn’t have to rely on money for everything and actually talked and traded even the little things in life .

Yes, but his wife does work & it sounds like he makes a living possibly with private tours & working with the university?

Bartering is still around. There was even a show on it back in the 2000s

@@lindylou3519And uses disposable plates and plastic utensils. Also saw some plastic water bottles (maybe the kids aren’t so keen to drink stream water). Regardless, interesting video.

Greetings from rural Romania, need to stop after 10 min or so because there is a lot of gardening to do, will definetely fully watch it in one of the next evenings, really felt to say thank you , Peter, for your entire work, you are doing a wonderful service to human kind through these videos, as far as Peter is concerned, i have no words to describe the gratitude, depth, reverence, respect i" ve felt in only a few minutes of watching him and this paradisiac place, in my heart that is the way for humanity to attain harmony, by nassively returning to nature, it is my offgrid family's greatest dream and responsability in this part of the world where we live in, so , as we do it with our visitors here on the hill, we would like to take this written opporunity and invite our brothers and sisters worldwide to come back to a healthier life in nature, repopulate villages, reconnect with our Mother❤

Having been stationed in Hawaii for 3 years, these videos brings me back all the memories the island has to offer! Mahalo Nui Loa for doing this!

This guy 💗. So much insight. So full of knowledge. So positive, his hearty laughter. How he tells how it is, how things are and why is so true. Thank you so much Peter Santenello for letting us take part of his wisdom and his life together with you 🙏.

This is the Hawaii I've always dreamed of visiting. Not all of the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas. I can sit for hours in one place and enjoy the quiet scenery and all that it offers. Greg, you are a gift.
