It's too bad that General Motors doesn't sell the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing in Europe. I would love to see you review that! (You could get a grey market version of that car, though, as I have seen people do it for other Cadillac models with similar powertrains😈). That would really be a hoot. It's a real monster built on the same platform as the Chevrolet Corvette, with electro-magneto-rheological suspension that is matched with a 6.2 liter V8 with a 1.7 liter supercharger bolted onto it, along with a six speed manual or ten speed automatic (most American buyers chose the manual) and rear wheel drive, and Brembo Brakes. If you want performance, press the V-button, or else it will be quite a calm vehicle based on what other reviewers have said. But I think you would really enjoy that based on what I have seen of you so far, and based on what other reviewers have said so far. Or maybe if you ever come Stateside you would like to drive one then 😈! General Motors has said it is the last generation of gasoline Cadillacs that there will ever be, and it seems that they were trying to create a legacy, so bear that in mind, but people seem to really like that vehicle, although they don't review them the way you do. That would be something I would like to see.

Excellent review, not afraid to call out the shortcomings of this car. It looks very cool although because they didn't make a dedicated EV platform the use of space in this car is rather disappointing; cars of this size can have more practicality if they're designed to be electric from the start, not a compromise platform.

I’m in the market for another EV to go alongside my Tesla. It would be replacing my F30 330d and would be my 4th BMW, but…this is simply not good enough - especially when comparing Kia’s offering with their EV6. It’s a purpose/built platform (flat floor), cheaper, longer range, larger cabin (especially in the rear), faster charging, bigger boot/trunk, frunk, seven year warranty, non-overheating wireless phone charger, Vehicle2Load function… I *LOVE* my BMWs but I just can’t justify this i4, which makes me sad because it looks good (better than the EV6).

BMW could, and should, have done better. I’m literally a repeat customer and about to drop my hard-earned cash…their precise target audience. My opinion carries more weight than passing commentators. You know the Kia has double-layer glass (unlike the BMW) and check out the tinny sound when closing the Beemer’s doors. I think you’re very wrong on this one.

      1. That's fine, if you have 4 people or 5 and one of them is a kid. Do you know many cars where 5 people feel comfortable? I remember even Tahoe is not that comfy for 5 adults.
      2. I am 1.75 metes high, the rear sit is very convenient. It sort of hugs you and holds your back very well. Off-topic: Actually I thought the EV with this amount of power causes sickness, but my son was absolutely fine on the curvy road. In my SUV he's always sick, that's why we sits on the front seat
      3. Something, frunk is not really helpful, it's inconvenient to open in Tesla and overloading it affects the car behaviour. Nice feature, but not really essential. The trunk of i4 is very big, it's really enough!
Just go for the test drive, you will fall in love like me!

The most recent 530e also does this "conditional" regenerative braking based on the distance of a vehicle in front of the car in Hybrid mode. Personally, I do not like the feature since I find the unpredictability of it to be challenging to adopt into my driving style. I would prefer to have a singular, predicable braking feel so that I can adapt my driving dynamics to one specific expectation. That said, I *do not believe* the 530e does this conditional regenerative braking in full EV mode (Electric mode), which is what I drive it in I'd say well over 90% of the time I'm in the car.
Luckily though, the "B" mode appears to be the driving mode I'd personally prefer in a full-fledged EV (instead of my 530e PHEV), so there appears to be something for me to look forward to when I turn in my lease :)

I have an older 530i. When I take it in for service, I get a 3 series sedan or the comparable SUV as a loaner. They ride rough, particularly the SUV, and the steering is to the tight side. The 3 series is more fun to race around the curves that my 5 series doesn’t like but for cruising, my 5 series is just a better ride. And the 5 series interior looks and feels more luxurious. I’d have to drive the i4 but, if it still feels like a 3 series, then maybe I’d be better off with an i5 even though I like the look of the i4.

One cannot evaluate the quality of anything independent of the price dimension. In that sense the model 3 is simply a much more better deal, with a starting price difference of 20k there is no comparison. The good things of the I4 simply do not compensate for the extremely expensive price of this car. Only at the same price tag of the model 3 it might be worth considering it.

Great car, nice (but not your best) review. I think you are not clear in your remarks about suspension and driving feel. Your remarks about implementing v6 or v8 sounds instead of space ship sounds are spot on. However, what would be more fun testing the 60mph figures yourself. BMW tends to be moderate about those figures. Carwow measured 3.6s to 60Mph instead of 3.9s mentioned by BMW.

Appears this is a compromise until they verify demand/volume. Would expect that a few years down the road. Yes, sounds should mimic real engines, not "space ships."
