- In this video we cover a super fast method on how to cut off doors while they are still hanging in place. I'll show you how to accomplish this using the Festool TSC 55 track saw along with the Festool Rapid Clamp. I also cover why its important to cut off the doors to the proper height and the industry standards for door height above different types of flooring. If you're a trim carpenter this is important information to know when trimming new homes.

Unfortunately the saw is currently not available
For some reason festool is out of stock on many of their saws on amazon. I’m not sure why. 🤷♂️
Actually it is available on Amazon here at this link.

cool method Spencer! Thanks for sharing this. Now I just need to find those clamps for my Makita track saw.....
I did this about 10 years ago at my friend's house. People used to make fun of me when I told them how much the saw was with all the different clamps. Then I started getting calls..."Hey can you come over here with that saw and do this or that?" Then a few years later it was....."why do you need that cordless version now?" Once in a while back then I would break down sheets if I was picking them up with my car, and the cuts din't waste any material because they were so accurate. I also made a vacuum adaptor for the Festool rail before I knew about the Mafell vacuum rail about 6 years ago. I love my TSC55 it has more power than the TS55 corded version I used to have, but you have to have extra batteries with you on the road.
32 years as a trim carpenter. Never did it this way, but I will from now on. Good video!
My TSC 55 is also one of all time best purchases. I can't believe how well it works and how much of a massive timesaver it has been.
This guy is by far the best trim carpenter and teacher on CZcams
You told me i was the best
@@charlesdefreitas8699 you are a very close second my friend!
Not to take anything away from this great channel....check out Next level Carpentry, he is a pro as well but with grey hairs.
@@charlesdefreitas8699 LOL cheating bastard
He’s great for sure. Especially for being a nice guy. Hopefully I’ll have the kind of following he has. It is nice to see someone who cares about quality. It’s few and far between.
You sold me for sure, but at 72 I'm retired now. Had an EZ Track system twenty years ago, but it was nothing like the Festool macines today and could never do door as you demo here. You are all Aces buddy, love watching your vids learn alot from you. Keep on it, and thanks!
I never would have thought of doing it this way. I've always just remove the door use sawhorses etc... I do however use my TS55 to cut the doors down. Great video. Excellent method! Love your work.
Your mention of predictability (or unpredictability) in the final flooring material was priceless. Things can always change. Cut once. And have it in writing what flooring type is final, so the cost is “on them” for door compatibility when flooring changes occur. Great tips.
That’s a really efficient method for doing the bottoms. I’ve been looking at my methods for many things I do recently after I heard you say again about efficiency of motion. I really think it’s important for so many reasons. Thanks!
Great video. For anyone looking to cut doors this way but not yet purchased a track saw, look at the Makita because it has a tab that slides out and locks into the track. This will hold the saw without tilting.
The Makita is also hella cheaper than any other track saw while being just as good.
Mind blown with those clamps. I've had the Festool track saw for around 10 years and I all but quit using it because the clamping system. Now that I've ordered these I'll use it all the time!
Wow this takes me back, I remember posting up a review of the Rapid clamps and using them to trim doors on the Festool owners group 10 years ago 😳
Love it! Wish you lived in Atlanta, so I could apprentice under you. I don’t think I’ll ever be as efficient as you, but you’ve helped me ton in thinking about how I’m using my steps! Keep up the great work.
That is so much faster & more direct than taking the door off the hinges - great idea!
I've just come from a future video of yours doing this with a normal circular saw. I'm blown away thanks for this. It's going to save me loads of time
Great, it is really great to see when someone thinks out of the box! :)
Unfortunately not always it's appreciated by the crew, sometimes others like to keep you on the same lower level as they are.
I love my ts75, every house I find another way to utilize this saw.
Can't believe you cut 1/16th inch off that door! 4:55... This is by far the safest system for cutting doors I've ever seen! Especially those glass pane french doors...
Good tip, i have been using festool over 20 years but i never think how easy the way you cut. Time saving!
Thanks
Great tip Spencer ! I have the same clamp for my Festool rails and use it to cut tapered extension jambs and really long shims. I added 120 grit adhesive backed sandpaper to the ends of the stop and clamp to prevent slippage cutting tapers. Also, try repositioning the cam lever on the sticky clamp. I had to do it my mine.
I think that is thee perfect example of what carpenters do best?
Solve problems & make it happen!
I am a finish/custom guy that does 80% of my work in the shop. The I install or work on site here & there.
So power, cords all that on site hassle is not one for me. I still use 90% corded tools & buy corded tools.
However; for you guys Spencer just solved a huge problem and made you money!
Everyone of you’s better send him a $100 Bill!
Sold!!! Impressed with that festool track saw. In fact, I’m gonna have to upgrade from my dewalt tracksaw. Thank you once again for sharing!!! Great job! Love it!!
I remember seeing this method advertised years ago with a dewalt commercial for their track saw. But I never knew how to do it, I own the Makita track saw and those clamps! I'll be trying soon. I just cut down a handful of wood commercial doors really wish I didn't have to take them down they are super heavy... thanks for the video!
I don't own any festool, but the more cool stuff I see you doing with the track saw, the more I want one! Problem is my woodworking business is a very small part time (less than 20k a year) hobby, and the other half of the board of directors doesn't seem to understand my need for more tools lol. Thanks for another great technique!
Great idea! I will be buying a cordless track saw for my trailer for just this purpose. You do a great job with your videos. Keep up the good work!
you sold me on the clamp when you mentioned it rotates!🤯 i will definitely be giving this method a go next time i get the opportunity
another great video. at $60, these clamps must be the cheapest thing festool manufactures lol. If they fit my makita tracks, I will definitely be trying this method out. Thanks Spencer
Ya it fits my Makita tracks , as well as Makita track saw, even better.
Great idea! So much quicker than pulling hinge pins, setting on sawhorse, cut, and repeat in reverse order. That has got to be a money making trick for you. All I can say is this, enjoy being able to get up and down off the floor like you do. As you get older you will find gravity harder and harder to overcome.
Great tip. Wish I had a track saw back in my prime.
always wondered, i read you could do that but never could figure out how to mount track. got to get some clamps now!
Btw Spencer, thanks for the inspiration and tutorial on this one. Has made my work flow on a multi-family development a breeze with no deficiencies in doors! It's a money making move for me, thanks to you!
The plunge saw is a fun tool to have. I love working with it. Love all your explanations. thank you:)
Great job on the Vid. Love seeing the newer methods and tools.
They do work with the Makita guide rail and plunge saw system. I have one and it is excellent saves so much time.
Spencer, I'm sold on this method!!!!!
Such an annoying issue with many of my jobs. I'm buying this set up as soon as the wood shop opens. I absolutely hate taking doors off to cut them down. Thanks!
I didn’t even know Festool had that cam clamp. 👍🏻
Thanks for showing this. I've got this system although dewalt and have heard about it but never seen it ti dare trying it myself so always remove hinges. As they don't come as a system in UK as they do over there. So cheers buddy
Great video! I just ❤️ my festool track saw but I never thought of using it this way. Thanks a lot !
Great tools. I love the quality of them
I love that clamping system! Nice vid mate!
Pretty slick idea. Thanks for sharing
Love it man. Great tip. I occasionally have to crosscut plywood in rough lengths and this clamp method would help me to stay on one side and not have to walk around the plywood and clamp the other side. Save me some time and my money all at once. Thanks Spencer!
You shouldn't have to use a clamp for cutting plywood. Just setting the track on the plywood should be fine.
Sold on the method for sure! Now I just gotta sell my boat or one of my pick ups to buy that festool track saw!! 🤣🤣.. honestly I've been going back and forth about buying a track saw but after this video I do believe I'll be getting the model used here. Another great video brother!
Hey Spencer,
Great video, as always 👍,
I'm in Australia and used sell flooring installation tools & supplies, and one of the tools that I supplied was from the U.S.A Crain Door and Skirting saws...
There were 2 models...
Crain 835 & Crain 812...
Super tools...
Keep up the good work...
This method is really good! You are pioneer with this idea.
Great idea! I work in finished homes so not so many doors to replace. Would need dust control as well. Might intice me into a track saw yet!
Like this method of cutting. Fast and less risky for the reasons you note.
Never can move doors down but you can cut them up (a bit). Would always opt for lower/tighter gaps given the choice. Few things piss off homeowners more than having huge gap under the doors. "But you have central hvac system" isn't going to be an excuse/justification that makes them ok with it.
Awesome video! Thanks for taking the time to share your tricks & short cuts of the trade.
I love this but I would be scared of the saw coming off my track during cut. I will keep on taking the door off and cutting flat. You're a better man than me.
Brilliant. Trimming heavy doors is such a drag. I have a TS55 and the rail clamps. I got a dewalt track saw for jobsite work and I’m hoping it will work as well
DUDE this is the best way to cut doors ;-) That is thinking out of the box very very very clever
we use it on fences, but using the screw holes in there track to hold the track....clever people, those Germans..
Great video. I have this whole setup but seem to always take off doors before cutting them...I will give this a try next time.
Awesome! I just hope the painters know to prime the bottoms of cut doors (something about keeping the door warranty, I believe). Please keep these vidoes coming!
Sorry but no one paints under the doors
@@Nest2309 moisture will get in from the exposed bottom wood.
@@Nest2309 I've always painted top and bottom of doors
I can say from experience that it will void any warranty if the door is not finished on all sides. Had a $1700. custom white oak door warp. Supplier came out to check, first thing he did was look for paint on top and bottom. No paint, no warranty.
@@thedge7 I had the same issue in the UK with an oak door supplier came out and said the doors had to have a finish applied to them within 48 hrs of delivery or warranty is void
Here is a tip:
A=size required to be cut from bottom of door,
B=size of the track from where the blade plunges to opposite parallel edge(ie. older Festool track used to be 161mm if I remember correctly, the new track are wider.)
A+B= your markings on the door are higher so you don't need to bend down and kiss the floor to check if you are on the line.
No more popping hinges I love it! 👍
Cmon ! I bought my spring loaded nail countersink / hinge pop up and love when I make them fly 😂
Wow man I have never done carpentry before and I am learning alot from your videos!
Beautiful! Great work!
Brilliant idea
Great vid spence,
Been cutting my doors like this for about a year now, so much easier slightly different set up though as I don’t have those clamps. I will be buying them straight away.
Keep up he excellent work.
From across the pond.
Clean Cut Carpenter can you use it on carpet
R C yes I use mine with carpet laid, just take longer to vacuum up the saw dust.
awesome as usual
Also, if you use a block on both sides of the track screwed to the floor, the door won’t swing away as you press the saw tight to the track - alternately you can use a 2x4 between the wall and door to push into for the same reason
Done similar thing last week but I cut the 1/5 of the upper part of the door and used a circular saw and I drove couple of 18g brad to hold one straight board .
Fist time I have seen that.great tip.
As an 🇦🇺 finishing Carpenter, we hand our own doors from scratch ( as in cutting and nailing and gluing our jams) so door height is not a problem. Also i has thw dewalt track saw and dont think dewalt have clamps that will get behind the hinge side.
Awesome as usual. One issue....whenever I cut a door I seal it with some primer or polyurethane before reinstalling. Also, if I’m hanging all the doors I can usually cut them (to the correct height) and seal them as I go.
Thanks for sharing bruh
Funny. I just got my track saw and the manual specifically noted not to use it in this orientation. Of course, this is a great idea and good to know for future reference.
Love your videos. Thanks
Now I want to go buy those tools. Just have to get my wife to agree. 🤣
Didn't know the clamp rotated, very usfull thanks. 👍
Great videos man.
I'll try that with the makita! The anti-tipping feature will be really handy there!!
Ah there cool clamps, save me some time, thanks again pal
hi from the UK i always leave the lining long so no door trimming if opening to small reduce thickness of head
Top notch content.. thanks.
Really cool idea, makes it easy on the carpenter. Only issue is the doors have to be at least primed on all sides to help prevent warping. I good builder will remove, cut prime, reinstall
They r going to get removed when the painter comes in never seen a trim Carpenter do much painting but great point 👍
No not sold on doing doors that way, but it does look fast. Love those clamps on the back of the track.
What gets me frustrated is, I have those tools and been in that same situation and never thought to do that. Thanks Spencer for these great tips.
I was a little skeptical at the beginning. But by the end I was sold. Perhaps not on stain grade doors, but those jobs here in Oregon are few and far between. Thanks!
Sold! Off to get the cam clamp!
great idea, I have the rapid clamp but forget to use it more.
I love it. I just watched you save 2 hours.
I would agree with that. Saves quite a bit of time.
You sold me!! I just need a good track saw.. Thanks
Great tip! Thanks
I was taught years and years ago by my dad, if there is a doubt in the thickness of the flooring. Glue and nail 1/2" blocks of wood to the bottom of the jamb legs and set it on the floor.
@@cmmartti I use 23 gauge pins and the is the purpose of the blocks are to keep all the tops at the same height. One room may have carpet the door right next to it has 3.5mm vinyl plank.
Cool tip I'll have to try this. Thanks 👍
Good demo.👍 By the way, you can improve the dust collection by about 10% if you duct tape over the blade change access window.😀👍
That is a good idea. I will definitely be using it in the future. but most of the time i have to take the doors out for the painters, so i rather do it on the sawhorse, than on my knees. But only if i don't have to take the doors out, it will be worth it
Great idea!
Nicely Done 👍
I love your videos. Great presentation. I think a battery operated circular saw is in my future, especially since I almost always use it as a panel saw. So this very thing might be on my list.
Very cool thanks for sharing
I use the same set up. Your very talented
Nifty way to save time. Well done👍
Great asset clamping mechanism.
I got to admit the cordless festool plunge saw was my favourite as I also had the contractor and a corded plunge saw.
I was going to give my corded plunge saw away as I used the cordless plunge saw.
Someone decided they wanted all my tools and helped themselves to all my tools. I woke up and found my tool boxes empty.
One minute you are totally set up the next minute you are cleaned up. So it was exciting times to restock and replenish my supplies over s period of years.
Mafel don't sell in Australia although you can buy online from USA to import to Australia.
I think I would still go for another cordless festool plunge saw. I bought a 6.2 amp hour battery. I was hoping festool would bring out 36 volt batteries like the competitors do. I guess festool are satisfied with the power of units they bring out and always wait a bit longer for their new products to come out. When they do, my goodness like their new cordless angle grinders and now cordless multi tool. Great video and really good. My only concern when you had the door open and cutting I was concerned you may have nicked the skirting as it seemed to come awfully close. I know you set the saw at the right depth. I might want to make a little blocker to keep sufficiently away from the skirting and rebate or even clamp to the end of the door above the track so it ensures not hitting the skirting.
Great work well done.
Sorry to hear about the theft. That is a carpenters worst nightmare. One thing I do is carry an "inland marine" insurance policy on my tools so that they are always covered by theft regardless of where they are.
Insider Carpentry I have a mate who was insured. Had his whole van stolen and insurance didn't cover it because of fine print need to be home at the time if burgularry.
It's good you have the insurance to cover no matter where you are.
It's when work gets quiet and you still have insurance premiums.
If you use a door block behind the floor trim or a clamp it will stabilise the door and prevent you giving those shallow cuts . Maybe a small piece of wood on an angle to pinch under door or a foot stop that holds that door from swinging back and forth and gives you back your hands for the saw
That's pretty freaking AWESOME! 👍🇺🇸👍🇺🇸
Great tip--thanks
Amazing!!!

Must be a young man to use properly.

Mansard Manor you got that shit right!! Old man here and I don’t do ‘low’.
Yep....knees ouch....back ouch.
I’m 58 and I’m still getting on the knees to go low good kneepads help a lot
“Stuck in lower position”.... friend I can’t GET into lower position!!!
Its way better than breaking your back moving doors. That clamp is in the shopping cart. It will work fine for my corded 75. No power problem.
