Just FYI, according to Joe Lstiburek (Building Science), we should be careful about insulating _too_ much. e.g. My crawlspace foundation is 32 inches tall plus footings, with the top 12 inches above grade... the frost depth here is 46 inches. If heat loss to the exterior ground is reduced too much, and the ground freezes, the foundation could heave.
Have a 1979 rancher with crawlspace. No barrier and has vents. Just had a company come and look at quoting new floor insulation and vapor barrier. He suggested removing the old floor insulation, putting insulation on the walls and sealing the vents and using 10 mil up to the termite board. Recommended adding a dehumidifier later if needed and leaving the floor joist uninsulated. This sounds correct?

So I fell prey to a salesman who did not suggest insulating our crawlspace. They only encapsulated with (I believe 6 mil) poly. Overall, they did a decent job. My question is, can I still insulate the space myself over the poly and in the rim joists or does the insulation have to be installed first with the vapor barrier over that? Do I also insulate the over the poly on the floor?
You can insulate over the plastic on the foundation walls and the rim joists after the plastic is installed. Usually insulating the ground is not done. Here is a great product to install on walls: diy.crawlspaceninja.com/insulation-vapor-barrier/
so i'm looking at a house to buy just north of Raleigh NC. that is encapsulated but no floor insulation. The walls are totally covered with thick insulation foam board and the vents are covered. Should it still be insulated between the floor joists? Thank you, just a little confused on this one. Oh, it is conditioned with a dehumidifier also.
Subfloor insulation is not required when foundation walls are insulated but you can if you want more insulation.
I really wish you were in my area. Just can't seem to find someone who seems reliable and knowledgeable.
