The Toyota Fortuner 2025: Challenges on the Highway
Powering the Fortuner and its predecessor, the Hilux, are mild hybrid turbo diesels, which greatly enhance both cars. With the use of a 48-volt battery and an electric motor generator, this innovative approach seeks to cut fuel usage by as much as 5%. This feature was first implemented in South Africa, but it is not yet known if it will be available in Australia. The South African-made Fortuner 48V has a 2.8-liter 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine that produces 150 kW of power and 500 Nm of torque, in conjunction with a mild hybrid system.
Coming soon to Australia, the Toyota Hilux GR-Sport and the Land Cruiser Prado 250 series will take a comparable tack. A mild hybrid vehicle, the Fortuner from Toyota comes with a six-speed automatic gearbox and intermittent four-wheel drive. The new Prado has an 8-speed automatic gearbox that might improve fuel economy because to its extra gears, but this one isn't available.
Though it's more technologically advanced, the Fortuner's light hybrid system is more expensive than its predecessors. Australia has a pricing range of $59,000 to $77,000 for the Hilux GR-Sport, which is $900 more than in South Africa, or over 11,000 Rand. The Fortuner and the Hilux are two of Thailand's most popular exports to Australia. Unfortunately, the country's modest electric infrastructure isn't ready to handle both vehicles just yet. This begs the question of whether or not future versions offered to Australian purchasers will incorporate this fuel-saving technology.
The Fortuner made its debut in Australia in 2015 and will get a midlife makeover and more digital features in 2020. But this version is different from the one in South Africa in terms of design. Compared to rivals such as the Ford Everest and Prado, which were taking their place last year, the 3,619 sales of Toyota Fortuners in Australia were quite low.
As the debut date of the mild hybrid Fortuner approaches, interest among Toyota fans and prospective purchasers in Australia grows. Everyone is waiting impatiently for this SUV to hit the market because of the promises of improved technology and lower fuel consumption. We promise to tell you as soon as we hear anything new about this fascinating trend in SUVs.
