      I've certainly heard of it and I've parked my car near Barden Bridge in the past when I used to live fairly near there, don't think I ever saw the waters of the Strid. The Yorkshire Dales are beautiful, nothing but good memories from there, hope to return sometime next year.

    There was another video by a young fella I’ve seen and he had an instrument measure The Strids depth at various points.
    The deepest measurement he registered was 70 metres,I mean that’s over 200ft for a stretch of river that in places is only 2 metres wide.
    Very scary.

    • @cptawesome11
      @cptawesome11 Před 11 měsíci

      Those results were far from accurate. A couple issues with it. The extremely aerated water messes with sonar. Sonar works by measuring how long it takes for sound to travel and reflect back from an object. This is based on the known speed of sound in calm water. With aerated water, that speed is different. Also, the device he used was being pulled by the current so the sensor on the bottom of the sphere was not pointing perpendicular to the river. It was pointing parallel to the river so it was essentially reading the horizontal "depth". This explains the significant depth difference between the calm and more turbulent sections.

    • @Rroff2
      @Rroff2 Před 10 měsíci +1

      True depth is probably more like 9 metres give or take - though once as a child we visited during a very dry year and it was several metres lower than normal and you could still see rock going down quite some way into the darkness with no hint of the bottom.
      Kids used to regularly jump over it at one point (I believe they removed/blew up a bit of rock to stop it) once one fell in and a couple of people grabbed them - they were probably pretty lucky but it certainly isn't true no one who has fallen in has ever made it out.
      My sister and I used to sit on one of the rocks with our feet in the main bit - I look back with horror now knowing what I do now - there is a tremendous amount of power just under the surface - not nearly enough to "suck you in" as some claim but if you were at the mercy of it no amount of strength or skill would save you - if you did go under the overhang you'd be pretty much done for.

    There's a shorter strid in Niagara falls park, Oregon. I was there a few decades ago it was maybe 3' wide at the narrows point. It goes into a serious of three pools that spawning salmon frequently died trying to navigate. The signs stated that death or injury WOULD occur, not could occur. When a river does that, it's some scary water.

  • @4faxache935
    @4faxache935 Před rokem +3

    There is so much folklore written about this place, the more that people repeat the stories the more the myth is perpetuated.
    There is no written record of how many people actually died after falling in to the Strid, just as there is no written record of how many people have fallen in and survived but there are some.
    People love to embelish stories which then creates a mysticism about a place which in turn then makes people want to visit and see/feel the "malevolent" presence they feel it exudes.
    Stay safe and enjoy your travels.

    I don't live too far from Bolton Abbey (lucky me). I walk there often. At 4:07 it isn't a bridge, It's actually an aqueduct. The Estate stretches from Barden Bridge all the way down to Devonshire Arms Hotel downstream near the roundabout, crossing the A59 road. I can never find a decent composition when photographing The Strid. The Mandarin Duck can often be seen on the river throughout the year, usually in pairs, and on the odd occasion, the elusive otter.

    I read somewhere that every single person that has either slipped into or willingly gone into this river, has died. Every... single... one. That's mental.

    • @HayandKyle
      @HayandKyle  Před rokem

      The history of people falling in is as murky as the water. It's a fairly scary place if you know what it's capable of. Even scarier if you don't and you try to jump across it like people have in the past 😱 Thanks for watching, stay safe ✌️

    • @Rroff2
      @Rroff2 Před 10 měsíci

      I was there as a kid when someone fell in and survived so not every single one - it is extremely and deceptively dangerous however - if you are at the mercy of the currents under the surface it is dumb luck if you survive or not.

    • @HayandKyle
      @HayandKyle  Před rokem +1

      Hi Phillip it's been quite a nice coat to be fair, has zips along the sides to make it breathable and it zips all the way up to the top of my neck so keeps the wind out 👍 😊 impressed with it 👍

      @Hay and Kyle I have one aswell but a burnt orange colour, love the flexibility of it and I can zip it right up to my nose to keep warm and the inside collar is soft to feel against my cheeks.
