I'm all for morally grey characters, John Stape is my all time favorite soap character, by the way but morally grey characters need 3 dimensions to work. Phelan is pure evil, and nothing but, and his plotlines are repetitive as hell. John Stape did bad things because he cared deeply about Fiz, Hope and even Rosie. He was also given time to be pathetic and vulnerable. If we saw a weaker side to Phelan, I might be able to feel a bit more sympathy and therefore I to may want him to stick around. In the end it's just a waste of a good actor, it's insulting to Connor McIntyre's abilities.
