- On my fourth birthday I was lucky enough to get a hand made present from my father. I remember opening it and that was 29 years ago now. The engine Is Henry the Green Engine from the well known series 'Thomas The Tank Engine' I was in love with all of the characters when I was little and with the rediscovery of the hobby all these years later It was great to get him working. I had tried to use him a few weeks ago but he didn't move and just made some electrical smells so I felt a service was in order and after doing the diesels on the last video I had some confidence.
So have a watch I hope you enjoy the process and If you have any old Locos that this gives you the confidence to have a go.

Good sir I do not know if you will read this comment but anyway why does Henry have Gordon’s face
Hello Rori, This engine is 30 years old and Henry didnt exhist in model form. My Father who kindly made it for my 5 year old self used what he could to make me this wonderful loco. I hope that helps
@@OONeal thank you for answering my question and sorry if it seemed rude
@Darío Nicolás Bermudez Luna hello, as I’ve explained to many others my Father made for me 30 years ago and I won’t be changing it at all as it’s how he gave it to me. If I make my own version then I will do something more towards how Henry looks.
also its have an old shape of henry
The show made the same mistake plenty of times don't worry
Any dad that makes their son an old shape henry is the best dad.
He is indeed :) Thanks for watching
Agreed
Any dad that makes their son both old shape and new shape Henry is the ultimate dad.
My dad gave me one but I lost it sadly in the 2000s or late 90s
I know right!
To call this a professionally constructed custom would be a massive understatement. Your father managed to create a model that looks better most almost any other Henry I’ve seen!
You truly have a treasure.
Thank you, Thats a great comment 😊
Your father's Henry is much better than any official Henry model i've seen, im impressed.
Wow your dad did a very good job on making Henry. He even looks like the original Henry from the television series. Spot on
Thank you, I will let him know
Not entirely, but considering Henry’s backstory this works well as an Old Shape Henry model, before he got his rebuild.
Watching this while working on my Bachmann Percy. That Henry model does have very lovely green paint and red stripes. It's so cool that your father made that for you.
Thats great and thats right he does have a lovely green paint and red stripes 😊
I won't spoil my lovely green paint with red stripes
7:09 "Oh I'm stiff, I'm stiff!"
I love it!
All of my stock on the layout, I could never bring my self to sell two of my engines. My dad got me them as Christmas present 40 years ago. So I totally get the thing with Henry and your Pug loco.
Thank you Corin, yes I will never part with any of them as there is history with them all. Thanks for watching
I know this an old recording but I couldn’t help myself from necro posting, do some people just not watch the video before making some crass comments 🙄 . I think it’s a wonderful model and you have a wonderful father, I’ve still got things my father gave to me at least 50 years ago as gifts and I would never change or part with them. 👍🏻
That is an impressive S1 Pre-Rebuild Henry that your father had build! Quite professional I might add!
It also looks like you gave him some good ol' Welsh Coal after your restoration.
Thank you, Its wonderful and carries alot of memories for me. Thank you commenting and your kind words
We need to see this running again. Bet Henry would look epic with the 4 wheel coaches. What a model. So cool!
Your layout, your rules Tris.
What a great, great present - and still grinding along!
What a great dad.
Keep well - be kind.
Thank you 😊 Yes he was great then and even greater now to have running on the layout.
I love the nostalgia that comes with homemade models parents made for their kids. There is so much love put into them! Even the bits that some would see as wrong, like Gordons face, add to the charm that is homemade engines.
Once there was an oo gauge engine named henry, he was built for a son who loved him, he was really useful, long time passes, Henry was feeling sick, he didn’t feel really useful, so the son helped henry get better, and Henry was really useful again.
Your Dad did a great job of this..Great to see your restoration and thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you I will pass on your kind words
Lovely to see Henry going again
Its a pleasure Dad
For a 29 year old custom model, your father did great!
Henry was my favorite engine growing up.....your father did such an amazing job making Henry for you and you have done an amazing job taking care of it. 29 years and still running strong.
Very nice to see people made thomas customs even back in the day! I'm assuming this model was made using season 1 as reference. Henry is in his old shape before the Flying Kipper accident!
Thats right and its my favorite shape if im honest but that might be because of playing with this one through my childhood. Thank you for watching.
wow very nice to repair something old
Wonderful loco - made by your dad that is priceless.
Its great to see Henry running you must be delighted to get something from your childhood running on the layout...Cheers Kev
Hi Kev, It was a delight for me too to run Henry around. He was my favorite engine and always has been. Thank for watching.
Your dad did and amazing job that Henry looks amazing
HAND MADE? HAND MADE?!
He looks Amazing!
Thank you! 😊
@@OONeal :)
Why do I find this video only now, this custom Henry is so well made considering it may be from the early 90s
I'm glad you like it :)
Good little video, I like the idea of using a 9v batt to test run.(I will use that going forward)
My lad liked the slow mo of Henry going round the track, I may have to try and get him one to keep Thomas company!
Stay safe.
Hi Ron, Thanks It was fun to make. The 9v Battery was a nice solution so I could do it down stairs. I think I will get some more equipment one day but for now its enough. I think I will need to another character to keep Henry company too. Stay safe too.
OO Neal are you planning to get a Hornby or bachmann locomotive or are you going to make your own if i have to recomend someone i say eather gordon or Edward or both
Your dad did a good job at making a old shape Henry
Thats amazing
In scene 11:18 i do not no if this was meant to be but it looks exactly like that episode were Henry wasn’t feeling well because of his fire box. Once he had welsh coal he sprung to life. Like the scene I mention
I use sandpaper to clean my Hornby engines
Very good job just needs a dom
WAIT I'M JUST REALIZING THAT THIS IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE OLDEST IF NOT THE OLDEST OLD SHAPE HENRY MODEL OUT THERE WHAT
You maybe correct on that one 😊
The fact that someone built this is what suprised me the most, do you know what engine or things he used?
Notification squad!! Hows it going!? I just bought my 5th and final locomotive for a while, just got my self a br green princess class 'Margaret rose' i spent £39 on it absolute steal, seller assures its running and from pictures no physical damage but im excited to get it!!!
You had the best dad
Cool
One remarkable little loco.
Your father’s an excellent craftsman! That’s a very very nice looking Henry!
Thank you very much!
O wow
Growly old fella, nice to see a model with some age and a bit of history running. I've got a couple of old Hornby/triang locos that sound the same, have you checked out Oscar Paisley on CZcams? Loads of old triang locos. Thanks for sharing, much appreciated.
Hello Kevin, I havn't but I will after you recommendation. Thank you for the suggestion. Its a pleasure to share.
Could be the wheel flange are shorting on the points on track two tripping the controller, cheers
Looks stunning!
"One an engine who went through some pain was rebuilt and restored again, he went for a run and had such great fun and everyone yelled hooray"
What’s a model train layout without your favorite Thomas character.
Very true!
There is no Old shape henry merch wxcept for a push along Toy, so this is pog AF
Your dad is a master
He is the best
Wow
So this is what happened in Crewe.
I guess you could say that 😁
A fine Old Shape Henry! How was it made?
My Dad made it using a Tri-ang chassis and the rest he used an old body which he modified it using plasticard and modeling puttey. for the tender he made the top half from scratch and used an exhisting tender chassis. Maybe I'll do another video about it oneday.
You got the best dad Henry has a Gordon face
He is the best 😊 Thank you for watching and commenting
Henry looks great did you demagnetise the motor magnet, that will help with the running quality.
What chassis does Henry use? It looks like it’s from a GWR loco
It is an old Triang Chassis on this model.
@@OONeal I meant which triang model was the chassis from
@@SaltyVan I will ask my father for you
your father is what i call a god
Ur dad is a talented modeler and u also are
Thank you!
Lovely engine! The grinding sound when it's running is slightly worrying though!
Don’t worry about that my model trains do that too it is just when they haven’t had a good run in
Love the model but why didn't your dad just buy you an actual hornby henry, was it not released yet?
That’s right it was before he was produced I had all my other characters and it finished it off very nicely when I was a tiny boy.
@@OONeal I know this comment is old, but frankly, your father's Henry is far better than Hornby's in my opinion!!:D
Its funny how henry had Gordon's happy face
It's so nice but just the face but anyways it still looks great
Cool as f@&k ☺️☺️☺️
I have a idea go get the Hornsby Henry mother and put it in that Henry moter
I have a 47 old one my dad gave me
Thats wonderful!
I just use nail polish remover
my dad when he was younger had a 1985 Hormby Thomas , sadly last year it started to smoke then suddenly the motor just blew . The rest of the model was fine and now has a brand new motor and runny once again
You slide the triang bodies forward after you've removed the Rear screw
Thank you for letting me know
@@OONeal no worries my friend
3 in 1 oil will help but be frugal with it.
Over 30 years old now
Henry Mk1 looks a nice model! How was it made, what chassis/body/model was used and how can I make my own one?
Thank you. My dad used a Triang chassis but after that he used plasti card and the tender was made using copper clad board soldered together.
@@OONeal Have you thought about adding pick-ups on the tender for improved running power?
Have you ever considered getting a new face for henry?
Hello, I wouldn’t want to on this model as it has a lot of centimental meaning to me as my Fatter man him for me. There’s part of me that would like to make my own models and would do it that way. I would regret changing something that is very precious to me.
Nice! Also it seems that Henry has no dome.
What locomotive did you use
It was something my father made for me. I believe its a Tri-ang chassis the rest of it was made by my father.
what loco was it made from
Idk why u'd read this 3 years later but do u know how henry (and his tender) was built, and if so care to explain
We going to see Henry in more videos?
I wonder if you could do a remake of a failed episode of "sad story of henry" by BBC of 1953 with this model (if you feel like making it, its ok, this is only of you feel like doing so or not)
Edit: strange part of the engine is that it has a gordon's face, not saying is bad i just think is weird having gordon's face istead of henry's face :/
You have NERLY HAVE A 30 YEAR OLD HENRY!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
That is right, its getting old and possibly one of the oldest oo gauge Henry Models in the world.
IS THAT AN OLD SHAPE HENY!?THOSE ARE SO RARE WHAT BRANDD THERES BARLEY ANY OF THESE THERE WOTH 10S OF THOUSNDS!!!!
Very loud but nice model!
I want to restore/repair my Class 67 Wrexham & Shropshire, it needs a new bogie and things like buffers :)
So I think you were using hybrid Henry (original henry before the accident)
Thats right, My father made me my favorite shape!
HORNBY MADE A OLD SHAPE HENRY
Hornby didnt make an old shape only his black 5 shape. This model was made by my father.
@@OONeal Oh, Well he did an amazing job considering I thought it was an official product.
Heneh
Shouldn't he be a 4-6-2 since he was a dysfunctional A1 prototype.
How did you get that model?
Hello, my father made it for me 30 years ago I have explained it in the video. At the time you henry did not exhist as a model so this was the best I could have. I will keep it this way as it is special to me and I don’t want to change it
Its A Poor Runner Like The Henry V1 Its Based Off
Just How
I haven’t watch the full video yet but why does Henry’s Motor sound like it’s going to die.
The engine is 30 years old and had an old motor and gearbox in it when it was given to me as it wasn’t new then.
You need more electric lube
You need to electrify the electric lube
Quick question uhh henry is wearing gordons face
Thats right, back then my father didn't have any option and I wouldn't expect him to sculpt one for me. Also I am happy with this 😊
Henry look like gordon
Thats because he is based off the old shape version, watch the first season and you'll understand
Why did you cover the face?
Ah never mind it was because it was Gordon
It wasn’t covered up just how I did the shot. I’m proud of this engine being that it’s over 30 years old and that my dad made it for me when I was a little boy so there is no need to be like that.
@@OONeal ok
@@OONeal sorry
@@OONeal about that
@@OONeal it was meant as a joke
Why is henry in this old shape?
This is my favorite shape, with some welsh coal he runs just fine.
@@OONeal well the “welsh coal” running on is clearly messing with his motor i mean listen to that motor! Its as loud as a car engine
@@yemmel9761 thats because its an 30 year old engine they where loud back then
@@yemmel9761 you do realise its 30 years old
Can you make a new face he has Gordon’s face
It’s Henry with Gordon’s face. Doesn’t he look impressive.
Thats right, its all my dad could do all those years ago.
