Motorcycle Handlebar Weight Removal for Mods, Honda NC700X

- If your installing handguards, hand warmers or cruise control on the NC700/750X you may have to remove the external and internal handlebar weight. While installing Barkbuster Handguards I had an issue finding information on how to remove them so I made a video for the next guy. Hope it helps.

I have just set the Barkbusters handguard on my NC750X. Although I watched this video It took a while I was able to remove the right side bar weight. The keyword was that to twist the screw driver.

I was having trouble putting the clip back onto the rubber grommet while reinstalling the bar end. This video helped me figure out the correct orientation for the clip. Thanks!

Wow man, I'm glad it was that easy for you. I tried that method and got nowhere with it! I had to move the gripped further up the bars until I could see the two holes revealing the pins. Then through the holes, compress the pin at the same time to free the weight and allow it to slide out. Maybe it was harder for me because my bike is older and already had heated grips installed.
Great informational video mate, I'm sure it'll come in useful for many.
I tried to roll the grip back to expose the hole for the cilp but never found one. Maybe it's the year of the bike? This was the only way I could figure to get it done after looking at NC forums for different ideas. I figured having a video to look at might help someone. Thanks Rob!

Video was a huge help. I was struggling for hours trying to figure it out. Looking for information on google and CZcams when finally I ran across your video. And within 5 minutes I had the internal weights out and my Crg lane splitter mirrors installed. Helped so much. Thanks.

Worked for me on my Bandit 650 (2005), a bit tricky and needs little elbow grease, but it works just by pulling.

Pancheesy are you referring to the long weight that inserts back into the handlebar? My understanding is it helps reduce vibration to your body and hands created by the vibration on the forks and handlebars. I hope this helps, thanks for the question. ATB

Wanted to know if removing these weights would cause any imbalances in the front end of the bike when steering and cornering?
I have ridden my cb600f 2011 without them and at acceleration I did notice the front getting a bit shaky on hard acceleration,
compared to the weights being in the handlebar. It could be just me but I would really appreciate some answers! :)
P.S I have inserted new Rizoma bar end mirrors, unfortunately with the weights, they seemed abit wobbly and wouldn't grip hard enough to the inner bar
thus making them shake out of position so I removed the weights and installed the mirrors without them. Maybe a steering stabilizer would solve the issue?

What about using a weighted slide hammer to pound it out? I understand the clip will be damaged and cannot be used again, but my new end has an expanding metal rod that will grip inside the handlebar. Will that be enough, or do I need to put the weights back in? I'm very close to having a shop do it for me for fear that removing all that weight will change my handlebar's feel and possibly give me vibration. My bike is a 2003 Yamaha R1 with 10k miles on it and the previous owner only had bar ends that screwed into the weights. They were once red but have since turned pink 😢, so it is time to put in fresh red 😜.
Is it absolutely necessary to remove this to install? Can't you just attach the bark buster without this step? Surely it would work?

Barry Keaveney I have considered that because I like the style and it would give a wider view. My main concern was getting it in and out of my storage unit which has a pretty narrow door. It would probably work really well though. Thanks for the comment.

Julio Gonzalez thanks for the comment. I used the barkbuster 7/8. My NC is a 2014 manual (non dct) and it has 7/8 handlebars. I think the size may vary by year and wether or not it's a manual or dct. I hope this helps.

Julio Gonzalez I've been looking online and called Honda powersports by me and both say the stock bars are 7/8. There could be information in the user manual too but If the barkbusters you order don't fit im sure they could be returned too, but it seems they should be 7/8. Fingers crossed for you!

My understanding of the weights that are inside the handlebars, they’re used to reduce vibration while riding. I removed mine and honestly never noticed a difference and I ride off-road sometimes. I hope this helps. Cheers and ride safe!
Thanks for the video. The little clip edge broke when I tried to pry it out, so I had to resort to brute force... What I did was to insert a screw sufficiently long in and then rest one flat edge of a large nut to the bar edge and then used a hammer that rested on the opposite flat end of the nut for support and could then pull out the rod using the hammers leverage on the screw, with support from the nut/bar. Was that understandable...? :)🙂
Bengt Olsson that is actually a pretty ingenious way to do it. Sorry to hear the clip broke, I honestly kept waiting for mine to break as well. Hopefully whatever your installing goes much more smooth. Ride safe and ATB!

Hi, I have a vfr800f 2017, and I beleave that the handlebar of the vfr, is the same as the NC700-750. Now , I just bought a KAOKO cruise control.
Do you thing that I have to remove the bar too, or the kaoko cruise contro attached to the weight bar? Thank you
Fens N I’m not familiar with that cruise control but the reason the weights had to be removed for the handguards was because they came with a piece that inserted into the hollow sections of the bad. Some aftermarket items attach to the existing weight, but it should come with directions. Sorry I couldn’t give a better answer and good luck!

Fens N I did some research on I and it looks like you just remove the outer part which is like a slide bar and replace it with the friction ride and adjuster. I’d be curious how well it works. Good luck!

Can i buy the weights you removed?
How in the hell are you able to roll back the grips?
I cant even get the weight to stop spinning with a set of vice grips on so tight i have to use a set of multi grips to do them up... It looks like they are done up with lock tight, i tried heating the bolts with a soldering iron for hald a damn hour and still nothing, have managed to get them out maybe 2 turns on the left side but no further.
I had to use a heat gun on the screw head to finally loosen it up. Also used a ratchet with a screwdriver bit for torque.
I ended up wrapping a rag around them and just pulling the fuckers out. idk how heating the screw would work that makes the screw expand.
Hello, I have cb500x 2019, bike is brand new with less than 200km on it, today i found out that my bar ends on left and right side are spinning inside the tube..Is this norma or should l contact honda dealership? Sry im beginner rider with no mechanical background

I'm going to purchase a NC and I want to know how does this motorcycle at around 80mph? does the handlebars vibrate?
harsha806 I would suggest getting the 750 for a bit more power. As far as handling this is the smoothest I've ever had to be honest. The engine is very low to the ground and the gas tank is in the back under the seat so it is balanced really well. Hope this helps. Good luck and ride safe!

What's the actual point of doing this?? Just curious.. I may be wrong but if you drop your bike by a mistake your bars are gonna fold up like aluminum foil without the weight. And to me it helps make my bike come back upright while in a deep lean
There are a lot of different purposes for installing these, but for me it was a means of keeping my hands protected when riding. When I first got this bike, even though it is a street bike, I took it off road and on trails and the guards helped keep my hands from coming into contact with a lot of branches and stuff. I have since wised up and ended up getting a second bike for this, but at first I couldn't afford it. Moto camping is one of my favorite things and I would do it regardless of the kind of bike I have. I appreciate the question, and especially the way it was presented in a cool and kind way. You forget gum ring inside. Two rings on clip one on other side.
Anybody have anything on installing the inner weights???????? It's really hard to get them in the clip-on.
I didn't' put the inner weights back in after installing the guards. It didn't change the ride or control, or contribute to any vibrations. I hope this helps.
@@fireballmalone1 oh okay, I just wound up using a screw from an old chinese bar end and the bar end from that and a rubber mallot and dinged it until it seated right then I could screw in the bar ends I got. It wound up working well. I am that crazy and go through the trouble of ordering OEM and trying to fit it exactly as they have it, but a lot of the time I'll just order on ebay or find a parts bike.
