Giant water bug attacks and kills a snake

- A 3cm giant water bug (Belostomatid, probably genus Lethocerus) stabbed its mouthpart into a 10cm garter snake (genus Thamnophis) I apparently startled into jumping incautiously into a rock pool, then hung on for dear life - and was rewarded with a real feast. I captured this video in the Rincon Mountains of Saguaro National Park in Arizona on September 14, 2013, just after midday. More photos and thoughts on the biology of this incident are at www.biodiversitytheblog.wordpress.com.
As a retired entomologist, I have been fortunate and seen many unusual insect interactions. This is a wonderful video that I particularly enjoyed. This is a giant water bug in the Family Belostomatidae. They are the largest of the Hemiptera and attack and feed on animals much larger than themselves. They have a piercing sucking mouthpart. Should be shown in Ent. 101 class.
I want to be an entomologist, i like Lepidoptera
Same I also want to become a entomologist
psycho
How do you differentiate belostomatidea and lethorocus ?
animal crossing was not kidding when they said these things could kill snakes

For the first time, I fall in love with the random commentary.
Thats good and all but why dont you have a seat right over there for me please

I was very pleasantly surprised by the knowledge and speaking style of the young commentator. Very pleasantly surprised. Additionally, the person did a great job of getting and keeping the camera largely focused on the subject.
This video should be a "how to" for other would-be posters. Thank you
GG WP
right! great kid! knows what's going on!
Matt Williams absolutely right. I loved you comment it.
Yeah.....it's stark departure from, "WOW...look it what I done seen!?!?!" Very well documented, kid!!!
Your stomach?? You eat too much chili or what??
water beetles are OP, plz nerf
The technical name for the water bug is the m203
+Recon WB This water beetle is wall hax through the water...
+Nippledozer id prefer to use a old crank type telephone shock it to death. I hate water bug they bite like a horse fly. Kill them every time.

When you started using the scientific names for the genera I immediately fell in love with you.
Haha this is relatable

Finally an amateur recorded video that is actually good quality. Not blurry or shaky or cutting away from the action. And a commentary that is actually informative and interesting rather than just stupid chit chat. Good job
Daniel Claybourne too bad the comments didn't improve
Daniel Claybourne Shut up.
Is this sarcasm?
Now we just need to get them to film bigfoot.
Fabulous commentary. Girl really knows her taxonomy.
ETA: Yeah she was in her late 20s apparently lol. Nice soft voice.
lol wut
AirplaneRandy lmfao
I didn't know it was called Taxonomy but she sure knows her stuff
That impressed me most about the video....so much different from all the retards that usually get to go viral....made me smile

this kid seems to be raised well and very passionate about his interest!
4zap7 the comentator in this video is a girl not a boy.
could be a girl who identifies as a boy
Edward Brink save the sjw stuff for another day.
Edward Brink could be.
RaxisESP why put it off for another day? Are you having some feelings that you cant explain? Its ok if you want to wear your mom's dresses and high heels, we wont judge u and you shouldnt judge yourself
Great catch, by you and the water bug!! I'm a Master Naturalist instructor in Florida and this is the first I've seen or even heard of giant water bugs taking such large prey. Thank you!

The girl sounds like Chloe Moretz and Ellie from The Last Of Us.
She really does
I thought the same thing! Haha.
holy shit she does sound like ellie

it's Ashley Johnson actually. but good that you know the game. looking forward to the last of us 2
It's hard to imagine a snake losing to a bug...
Thats a toe biter it poison will litteraly turn the snakes insides to mush and drink it like soup

niccolom actually happens quite often in places where bugs are fairly large, such as in deserts or rainforests, but giant water bugs are exceptions sense they feed on anything they can catch anywhere in the world. Arthropods don't care if you have a backbone or not, if you can be overpowered, you are food.
some insects can kill snakes like mantis and centipedes
Isnt that diving beetle?
"Imagine being taken down by an insect like that"
The commentary was actually very pleasing and educating to listen to
Ellie, stop filming bugs and let's go. They're clickers coming
LOL
Jfc it does sound like Ellie.
+HydraWolf1 it's sounds like her man, it's exactly what i was thinking, her "oh man" just did it for me.
+Gwyn's Last Knight Oh my god, I love you!
+Meltdowner legit
Is this girl some type of biology major?
That'll be a no from me dawg
Justin Y. First response!
Justin Y. Lel
Hi
Bruh why do I see you EVERYWHERE????
Ha
This is the first time ive ever seen a candid vid like this where the commentary actually enhanced the vid, great job!
future national geographic photographer/cameraperson/entomologist!
Shes actually a grown adult and already a scientist lol

Very interesting hearing this young ladies commentary. If she had a wildlife show I would watch just to hear her graphic description of the encounter. Well spoken. Very smart she is.
.
Holy crap this kid is smart
Shes not a kid.
The kid filming, sounds like this is a kid with his mother, and he is smart.
Ramius Z its a grown women speaking, she owns the channel, and is/has completed some degree in biology
Tom P.
So.
The girl filming this is extremely intelligent and extremely adorable
Just now got this in my recommended 4 years later
This one is a must-see in my classes when I get to aquatic insects unit. I'm so glad this video exists!
Hmmm, I didn't speak that well or have that much knowledge as a youngster!
I did, it's awful. A real nightmare. 90% of Adults are freaked out by you and kids your age are basically as if a 30yo man was put in a classroom of 10yo'ds.
It almost killed me.
/r/iamverysmart
Maybe because there is absolutely no use for knowing stuff like that, unless you have figured out by that age that you are going to work as a biologist or something like that.
123TauruZ321 I suppose that there's no use for knowing anything at all then I'm surprised you were able to put that comment together, must've had your mom come and type it up for you
Yeah well, that is going a little too far the other way ^^ Learning to write, speak and simple math is not a bad idea. But when parents freak out over their own children not knowing exactly some kind of stupid general knowledge like what kind of bird that is, or who was the president in that exact year, i just cringe at them. Poor kids. I wish they knew how to make good money instead.
good job. I am happy to see and hear youth speaking intelligently. not all hope is lost.
Stay half heartedly cynical, my old dude.
Friz Gaming Don't you mean "first off" fucking neet.
88xironman Rosser I what I was thinking😃😃😃😃😂😂😂😂
The youth are more clever than most adults....
88xironman Rosser only 85% hope lost
So many things I love about you and this video.
The commentary was perfect. Clearly you have a deep love for nature.
And you know and understand what’s happening.
Passion, intelligence, knowledge of what you are seeing.
Thank you so much for sharing this with the world.
Looking forward to more of your work!
You know when someone says "imagine what that would feel like" they want you to feel uncomfortable
well i have been bitten by a toe bitter before and i feel for that snake R.I.P ekans!
nroLachiem
Ekans vs Anorith?
Dude you sound mad young but you know your biology!
Human Abstract it's a girl
Trav think you could not be such a sensitive bitch? Omg he assumed somebody's gender, call 911! I'd kill myself if words hurt my feelings that much.
Adalyn B he wouldn't know what to do with it if he got it.
Manan Kukreti dude goes both ways for both females and males
Trav bitch you was serious as a heart attack until people started bashing your sensitive ass. It will be ok there snowflake, we all know your the type that everything offends you
The beauty about this video is that it is so natural without preparation and filming an unexpected situation. The commentary is excellent and it is off the cuff as the lady does know what is happening. What is so good about CZcams is that while we are at home because of different reasons including old age and we cannot go out to such adventures, here we are at home viewing what these intelligent youths are experiencing. Also what is intelligent about these ladies is that they accepted nature as it is and they never commented on its cruelty.
This video makes me happy in so many ways. Keep enjoying being a kid and outside!! Awesome job!
the snake hates you, so fk you idiot
@@Imozep4Live??

Jack Black go get your diaper and meds...nurse ratchet has been looking for you
Whoa! That was pretty amazing! I've never seen a battle to the death between a Water Bug & Snake before. I didn't even know that COULD happen. Lol. Great video! 😁
Vikki's MUKBANG'S and more
Neither have I but I'm more impressed with the cameraperson.
Terrance Turner Oh I totally agree that the person behind the camera was very impressive on video skills as well as knowledge of the bugs. I was just in shock about the bug taking down the snake cuz I didn't even know that could happen. I wouldn't of believed it if I hadn't seen it. Lol 😂
Vikki's MUKBANG'S and more
Neither did but I should have known better. Water bugs are pretty big (saw one at my job) and I saw footage of one take out a frog.
there's a lot of creepy comments about the voice in the video.
I like that she knows what she's saying, and making educated guesses, instead of spewing nonsense out of their mouths.
You should go work for the Discovery Channel!
Those giant water bugs can actually fly. That must be a sight. LOL
What, you think we invented anti-aircraft missiles to shoot down PLANES? AHAHAHAHAH!!! You naive fool...
Bill B. I saw a video of some idiot messing with one and it flew at their face
Gotta throw the whole earth away
I was walking on a path with my grandma and one flew out of no where and started attacking my leg it hurt like a motherfucker ;-;
This fucker just bit me literally the worst bite I ever received
Never thought I'd see a bug take down a snake before in my life
I wanted to thank the parents and the school of this kid, its hard to fine a well mannered and a well spoken kids now a days. Fantastic video , sum thing never seen before.
Thank the kid
Your commentary was so good! You should be an animal commentator.
+taydesune
What a stupid irresponsible thing to say to someone just because they paid a compliment!
What goes on in that tiny brain of yours?
+Gateways Learning I would love for her to have a commentary on Planet Earth. "Oh my god look at that, holy crap I don't think it's gonna make it."
+Clive Bindley its sad because they look like they would be friends ..
Wow kid sounds like she knows a lot! Bravo!
That's gotta be one of the best unexpected "capture" videos I think I've seen yet!!! Great Job you guys!!!
Normally I don't comment on these videos, but I would like to say that I absolutely loved your intelligent commentary and thank you for uploading and teaching me something about giant water bugs. Keep up the great work!
This video is a great example of what strong, mighty predators the giant water bugs are. This small insect is able to take down a garter snake much larger than itself, and this is a small species. Water bugs are known to feed on fish, frogs, snakes, and even baby turtles.
Once I found the carcass of a baby turtle that had been killed by one. There was a large hole in the turtle's neck and it was completely hollow of organs or fluids.
Once I found the carcass of a baby turtle that had been killed by one. There was a large hole in the turtle's neck and it was completely hollow of organs or fluids.
a bug killing a snake...hard to believe.
NOT REALLY IF THE SNAKE DIDN'T SEE OR SENSE THE ATTACK FROM THE GIANT WATER BUG COMING . I SAW ON YOU TUBE A PRAYING MANTIS WATCH , CATCH AND EAT A SNAKE IN THE WOODS OR FOREST . ENUFF SAID .
WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING!
RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE! LOUD NOISES!
The snake was probably alive for a while, the water bug has a potent venom that paralyze its prey. So not only was the snek killed by a bug, but also sucked alive.
This video featured wayyyy more scientific analysis than i was expecting.
Giant Water Bug Attacks And Kills A Snake! (Gone Sexual) (Gone Wrong) (In The Hood)
I blindly stuck my hand into a net while netting for tadpoles and got bitten by a smaller water beetle once... I've been bitten and stung by many things, but this was some next level pain, it doubled me right over and I saw stars. Cant imagine what a bite from this beast would be like.
Whoever the commentator is, You have a future in this.
That voice saying "...down into the depths of its (evil) lair!" - - - -
Insufficiently dark and menacing and no 'Mwah-ha-haaa'.
This video is so awesome!!! You did really good at holding the camera still and focusing on the carnage Lol! I punched the Like button in the face!! :D

great commentary. Thumbs up
FYI if you'd like a more specific ID on the garter, it's Thamnophis cyrtopsis, black-necked garter snake.
No wonder it hurts like hell when these things "bite" you.
im more amazed at how this kid knows his stuff. good job kiddo great video. thumbs up
Sharif Johnson not a kid
His... really... his?
Blackest Hole hypocrisy cause you think you know everything about muslims it seems
Blackest Hole
Bro are you ok? Is this what I can expect from anti-Muslim people? You really have no knowledge.
Any chance u get u try to attack Islam, such messed up people.
+Blackest Hole Since when is kiddo linked to a gender. Last time I checked kiddo was used for both boys and girls of young age. But nah you gotta somehow link it to religion. You're probably going to call me a "libtard." now since thats the only good comeback to be fair.
All while watching the surrounding scenery reminded me of Romero Canyon in Catalina State Park, where I've seen a number of those things. Thanks for posting the scientific name, it confirmed that we're dealing with what is commonly called a "Toe Biter", so called for reasons seen in this flick. They'll even attack a small stick, when playing it in front of them.
Man, that's definitely the first time I've ever seen anything like that.
She should be a commentator for nature films! Awesome job!
you are a good commentator ,lady .
°_° I'm not worried about the snake I'm worried because those things live in my pond
the shiny umbreon dip your toe on pond , and see what happens next
Move away
This video solves a 20 year mystery for me. I found one of those bugs dead in a pond I used to swim in. I had no idea WTH it was until now. But, I never swam there again.
This is so soothing! Her voice, the giant roach, the snake, and the death!
giant water bug, toe biter, electric tick*
You sound young to me, but have impressive knowledge on something that seems like such a random event. I'm just kinda glad to know this can happen lol.
MOM GET THE CAMERA
where was this filmed approximately? curious to try and name the garter species. looks like a pretty large belostomatid too. they have a lot of those bugs and a nice diversity of garter snakes in southern New Mexico.
One of the most interesting and neatest videos I ever saw and your commentary was awesome too.
Who is this girl and where can I marry her.
Pedobear Aproves
Alex Pizano Old enough to count old enough to mount.
P O P culture Your mom obviously can't count, she had 1 too many kids, by that I mean you. Maybe one day you'll have a daughter of your own, and as soon as she starts counting... you'll be a proud father right?
How do you know it couldnt be a boy with a girlish voice cause hes young
Justin Hodge Well, because I have eyes and am also not mentally retarded. Also the fact that I doubt any young kids know the proper scientific name of a species of water scorpion
This is awesome. I love the commentary!
“Imagine How Bad It Would Be To Be That Snake” Is My Favorite Line
When they busted out the proper genus/ species I suddenly felt really really dumb
The hot girl at the end made the whole video worth it, blurs and all.
+OldeFreedom You crazy or what?
For acknowledging a beauty at the end? What are you, asexual?
You can barely see her face, her hair or anything...it's blurry and she has a brimmed hat on casting a shadow...how would you know if she's "hot?" lol.
Erin Vandalay
You realize you can use something called the "Pause" feature found within the video and look at her closer? Preferably on a big screen TV for maximized effect. Have fun with the new knowledge.
OldeFreedom thats just doing the most.. brb buying 60" monitor
that is so awesome hearing you guys geek out over this bug and snake. pure awesome!! love it.
Great video. Good job catching and documenting a rare event. Interesting to see!
“The bug has its butt out of the water, it’s probably taking in air bubbles or something” 🤣 like a reverse fart
Would have smashed the bug and maded the snake my slave.
at least you were honest saying "slave" instead of "pet". that's what it means to take an animal from it's natural habitat and tame it.
RaxisESP well not really. A slave does anything for you without question and a pet....is just for companionship.
Brandon C smash it with your bare foot
"Friday"
You are playing RPG so much.
Snake be like, whuuut? Bug be like, mmhmmmm. =]
10/10 commentary. Congrats on your directorial debut, better than National Geographic.
I had to watch that 2x, it was so cool. great job recording.
Wow, the narrator rocks! Great video of a very cool event!
Excellent commentary and camera work....Well Done You ! 😃💪🏼🌅🌈🐬✨
“Imagine how much it would suck to be that snake” about sums this up perfectly!
Greetings from a fellow Zonie. Love this vid, especially the running commentary complete with taxonomic identifications.
the beginning of the next nature tv host
just watch out for stingrays :(
Ugh I'm gagging, but morbidly fascinated.
I used to play at a Pond as a kid and a relative of this bug bit me. Was like just 1/2 inch long but hurt so bad. I really feel with this snake. Ouch.
My cousin had one of those giant water bugs on his porch when we were kids. Probably the nastiest bug I've seen man.
This kid is going places, at that age I was still suckling my thumb and could barely form a sentence.
Very different video.
Beautiful Voice. I wish you record more such events.
CZcams recommended really wants me to see animals today
