Giant water bug attacks and kills a snake

  • A 3cm giant water bug (Belostomatid, probably genus Lethocerus) stabbed its mouthpart into a 10cm garter snake (genus Thamnophis) I apparently startled into jumping incautiously into a rock pool, then hung on for dear life - and was rewarded with a real feast. I captured this video in the Rincon Mountains of Saguaro National Park in Arizona on September 14, 2013, just after midday. More photos and thoughts on the biology of this incident are at www.biodiversitytheblog.wordpress.com.

As a retired entomologist, I have been fortunate and seen many unusual insect interactions. This is a wonderful video that I particularly enjoyed. This is a giant water bug in the Family Belostomatidae. They are the largest of the Hemiptera and attack and feed on animals much larger than themselves. They have a piercing sucking mouthpart. Should be shown in Ent. 101 class.

niccolom actually happens quite often in places where bugs are fairly large, such as in deserts or rainforests, but giant water bugs are exceptions sense they feed on anything they can catch anywhere in the world. Arthropods don't care if you have a backbone or not, if you can be overpowered, you are food.

The beauty about this video is that it is so natural without preparation and filming an unexpected situation. The commentary is excellent and it is off the cuff as the lady does know what is happening. What is so good about CZcams is that while we are at home because of different reasons including old age and we cannot go out to such adventures, here we are at home viewing what these intelligent youths are experiencing. Also what is intelligent about these ladies is that they accepted nature as it is and they never commented on its cruelty.

All while watching the surrounding scenery reminded me of Romero Canyon in Catalina State Park, where I've seen a number of those things. Thanks for posting the scientific name, it confirmed that we're dealing with what is commonly called a "Toe Biter", so called for reasons seen in this flick. They'll even attack a small stick, when playing it in front of them.
