I learned a packing trick just now. The big trash bags with the drawstrings around your clothes is a great idea. I am 71 and not planning to go off to college any time soon - but who knows.
Everyone will tell you college is the "best 4 years of your life" but who knows. For me it was just hard work and worries - about money, and getting thru the classes. But I graduated with an engineering degree, and it set up the rest of my life for me. And so, even if it becomes just hard work and worries, try to hang in there and see it thru. You will never regret it
Get night lights and wifi sockets to turn off and on lights in your room so you don't have to get up to turn off/on. Get a melt wax warmer so you can have nice fragrance of your choice in your room very safe. No flames. Use wifi socket to turn of/on with your phone. It can also be set with a timer so it will auto turn off. Very handy. You can get wifi sockets at QVC or Amazon..also. you can control whatever is plugged into the sockets from your phone no matter where you are. So before you go into your room. You can turn on a light in your room before you open the door. Safety hint.
Keep a flashlight with you at all times in your purse.

Enjoy college! You did a very efficient job of packing. A little motherly advice - I sent 3 kids off to college just before cell phones were available and I about went crazy waiting to hear from them. Give your mom a call frequently but also between calls, send her a text even if it only says hi I'm fine. It will make a world of difference to the worry level on mom and dad! Okay, off the soap box! Another mom here - with a son in his senior year of college this year! I can echo the comments about a text or photo. The ones my son likes the best, are photos and texts from our dogs🤣 (one is a talkative old girl, the other a goofy silly dork of a boy) because they really do miss Their Boy!
Jess, I'm so happy that you going to college and stretching your horizons to new life. If I may offer a suggestion, when packing bedding pillows, towels, soft stuff; use a zip lock vacuum storage bags. Once zipped shut you vacuum out the air and it gives more room for packing. I recently moved and they are wonderful. When empty they fold up and can be stuff in corner in our dorm closet. Best of luck with your college life.

So excited for you. Okay, it was 50 years ago that I was leaving for college but since things never leave you. I had a Jeep Wranger sport in the 90s, then a 4 door Sahara, and now that I am old, a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4. You just can't take the jeep out of the girl. Enjoy this next chapter in your life.
I feel sad ! Do not forget to pack a flashlight , and spare battery's just in case of a black out. Got a feeling it going to be a rough and early winter.

Since Guelph is a "college town", getting fresh supplies should be easy!

Jess I graduated from OAC even before your parents, so that makes me an old guy but if I can offer any thing it would be keep your circle of friends as big as possible. People from far away will value going for a drive to see the area or home with you for the weekend and your insight into what to expect. Most of all enjoy. Best wishes.

Girl..buy some press n pack.. Or vacuum pack bags. Pillows n bedding suck down into tiny bags. So do clothes. So excited for you.
Hey Jess the big adventure is getting ready to start! Advice I can give you some, you're going to meet a lot of people this first year and they're all going to have some kinds of stories to tell. And listen to it smile remember it and by the third and fourth year you will know 90% bull 💩 you don't have to call them out on it but you will be looking at it a few years down the line. Stay goal-oriented have you priority set and don't waver. We've all seen you do so much it's time to dominate! I know not much of a pep talk but that's kind of how I think of college.

I remember helping my sister, years ago. we just filled up the back of the bronco II and a lot was from the one chair, that is without the rear seats down. My brother just had a few bags and his computer stuff that did not even fill up the back of the escort. Then when we got there there were some people with an entire bed of a pick up with bins, bags and furniture for the dorm rooms. I always thought it was interesting seeing how much stuff people took to college. Then one of my friends when she went, it was by bus and just two bags, but that was in the early 1990s when you really did not need a computer.

Get a set of Blink cameras to put in your room as security. 3 cameras. You can get them on QVC. Just as a precaution. To be secure..

My Mom was just like your Mom, happy and sad at the same time. Keeping in touch, which is definitely easier now than when I left for college 40 years ago this month, is so important for both of you. I have met both Charisma Carpenter and Emma Caulfield from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Emma is nice.

Pro - Tip. This is the time to buy beach towels. Why you say- not time of year. Beach towels dry fast and give you plenty of length for wrapping.

Best wishes for a great university experience! As a mom who has sent her sons and daughters off it's kind of heart breaking. 10 years ago we sent our youngest daughter off to a University 2 hours away. When she graduated
I was looking forward to having her move back home but she met someone, got married and just had her first baby 2 weeks ago. Time goes by so fast. You' re such a sweet daughter to your mom and dad. Be sure to give your mom some extra hugs. She's going to need it.
It's exciting to see you get ready for this new chapter in your life. I hope you have a great experience at University. Back in the mid-1980's, I moved about 400 miles from home to work on my business computer systems degree, so not too many trips back home except for longer holidays. The first month was challenging with a lot of adjustments figuring out how to settle into a completely new routine. You're way ahead of where I was as far as life skills with all the work and experience you've had on the farm, so I think this will be a smoother transition than most! Have fun and it will be great to see what you like (or don't like) about your new academic and social environment.

You should have a pair of rubber gloves and some kind of spray disinfectant. Room deodorizer and over the counter medicine. All shopping in a collage town is more expensive here in the states so beware! Good luck!!

I thought your mom would be helping you, you know spending every minute with you. Oh I forgot she's probably up to her elbows in lambing.
Jess what are you taking in school?what did your parents take? You are a beautiful, caring and very smart. Your going to be fine. This is one of the most important thing you can do for yourself. I think you enjoy the field work but not so much being a sheep farmer. I think I remember you saying once about not liking sheep? I'll be anxious to hear how it's going but I already know.

Loved the packing.
We did not travel by car(no one drove), so I traveled by train and use grey bags (large nylon bags which folded down to nothing). I got expert in stacking every thing when I move so much so that when I started pulling everything on people were amazed where things came from!!
I lved the clothes packed on hangers, you get vacuum bags that do the same but you vacum out the air!!!

As a tip for your pillow cases. I recommend in investing in satin pillow cases. They will help prevent frizz and knots on your hair. Also will help your face not dry out or get any break outs!! Hope you have a fun time at school!! College is so much fun!!

Jessica, excellent idea using garbage bags for your hanging clothes! 6 years of back and forth for my university kiddos, and I never thought of that method once. Darn! LOL Congrats on the next chapter. Study hard, call home often, and if mom knows how to use SNAP MAP and she's anything like I was with my kiddos, she'll always know where you are 😉

Did you take a 12” fan in case room gets hot? Wastebasket, scissors, tape, stapler/staples, a floor lamp is handy by the bed or desk, fun stuff for when you’re bored?
