- The oldest surviving form of Hindustani classical music, Dhrupad, originated from the chanting of scriptures from the Sama Veda. Primarily rendered as means of worship-service in temples, Dhrupad gradually flourished in the royal courts. Structured in a strict rhythmical pattern with precise elaboration of a Raag, different styles of Dhrupad evolved over the years, of which Dagar is the oldest. Khayal, the subsequent derivation of Dhrupad, although almost replaced its pre-eminence, Dhrupad’s significance in the modern world can be considered to be on a perpetual rise.
