- Jonny Mortimer-Hendry is a retired Captain from the British Army. He served with the 2nd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment as a Platoon Commander, deploying to Afghanistan on Herrick XIII in 2010. He moved to UK SFSG [1 PARA] on promotion to Captain and returned back to Afghanistan with his new unit. He spent a brief period of time with 3 PARA as OC Mortor Pl before leaving the army to pursue other ventures.

I really appreciate this young man’s comments about junior and senior NCO”s responsibilities for educating and helping their Young Officers in their early years. They need guidance! If they don’t get responsible and measured guidance they will not respect their NCO”s in future years and if they are bright officers, will turn out to be barking mad, out of control CO”s!
Thank you both for such an insightful interview. Leant so much about the military and the strength of the human character.
Great podcast, in depth discussions, and another fantastic guest, that many of us ex-forces and currently serving, can relate to, and civilians can hear from the horses mouth, not some TV put together docudrama that only tells the 5-10% of a soldiers life, always the Juicy bits.
Only one suggestion.... Change the "music" that is running at the start,😂 sounds like a two year old found the keyboard from the 1980s 😂. Seriously though, thanks for the great podcast ,and thanks to all of the service men and women,who served, currently serve, and those heros who sadly paid the ultimate price. 🇬🇧👍
That intro is beautiful. Footage is great, good beat that kicks off with the (i think) m72 law, Perfect. First time watcher. I have yet to watch, but seems legit from the intro.

Enjoying the podcasts mate, just started tuning in. Really good listen and some cracking stories.
The first Lead Wasps episode I have listened to- and I found it very enjoyable.
Excellent interviewer and also suberb guest speaker, able to articulately, confidently and frankly discuss an army career, and its various features.
The discussion of command was particularly insightful from the ordinary ranks perspective of the interviewer, and the officer ranks of the interviewee- indeed a discussion. I have Liked, and Subscribed.
Excellent discussion -a great career.

Interesting comments on age and how you deal with problems. I'm 43 now and could have dealt with most things that I saw in the army far more effectively however, seeing half starved kids covered in filth in the Balkans would break me now but at 19 it barely registered.

You’re absolutely correct. Platoon sergeants are so responsible for developing the education of their subalterns. I always preached that to my Sgts Mess when I was RSM. essential, if you’re going to have senior officers with respect for SNCO’s!!!

Something reminded me of an evening with a randomly met ex-Para NCO in an Antwerp bar, for some reason he was going on about how much he could drink, so I stayed with him beer for beer for 8 or 9 hours exchanging round after round until around 5am he collapsed to the floor and I had to help him up lol after he didnt heed my advice and drank silly strength beer. Well worth it, what a muppet. He had excellent stories but wasnt boasting any more about booze after some hours in my company. He tried hard though.😂
Also noticed Army Officer speech/accent/delivery/syntax/vocabulary now merged with normal member of public, verbal delivery lightyears away from equivalent of 50 years ago (or even 30 years ago)
Y'know...kinda....like....right....slang...bad language not just when quoting speech....and vowels flattened out totally.

Fair play to Capt Jonny Mortimer-Hendry , he's had an amazing life. Except, even speaking as exForces the bad language was over the top and unnecessary. It's not big, it's not clever and perhaps civvies and young people aspiring to join up think we are a bunch of foulmouths. Just saying, and no of course we don't have to watch it.

Great interview! knew Jonny BITD, but Soz tbh, had to turn it of...f when Bear Bluffer was mentioned! Grills always tries to legitimise himself and what he hasn't done, by aligning himself with good people and there idias.....
