  • Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand, addresses the general debate of the 73rd Session of the General Assembly of the UN (New York, 25 September - 01 October 2018).
    JACINDA ARDERN, Prime Minster of New Zealand, said that New Zealanders’ empathy and strong sense of justice is matched by their pragmatism. Regardless of its geographic isolation, New Zealand sees itself as a member of the international community, a community whose heart is in the United Nations. She urged that the Organization’s founding principles not be consigned to the history books, noting that the need for multilateralism and collective action has never been greater. States are united by the positive and negative effects of globalization, and amid unprecedented economic growth there still exists a growing sense of insecurity.
    It is not surprising to witness a global trend of young people showing dissatisfaction with political systems, she noted. The world now has a generation that will grow up more connected than ever and unsure if jobs they are training for will exist in 20 years. This is a borderless generation, one that is calling for responses to challenges such as climate change. Two weeks ago, at the Pacific Islands Forum, climate change was declared the single biggest threat to security in the Pacific. While action on climate change remains optional, the impact of inaction is not. Any disintegration of multilateralism on the matter is catastrophic.
    She also stressed that while international institutions are not perfect, they can be fixed, calling on States to rebuild and recommit to multilateralism. There is a need to rediscover the shared belief in the value of connectedness. International trade, for instance, is helping millions out of poverty while at the same time some see their standard of living sliding. The answer to the problem is not protectionism, she assured, urging States to ensure that the benefits of trade be distributed fairly across societies. It is incumbent on States to build productive, sustainable and inclusive economies.
    New Zealand has set itself the ambitious goal of becoming the best place in the world to be a child, she said, adding that focus on nurturing the next generation must be matched with concern over the environment it is inheriting. The Maori community in New Zealand encapsulates this concern through the belief that people are entrusted with the environment and thus have a duty to protect it. The race for economic growth and wealth will make all people poorer if it comes at the cost of the environment. Meeting these challenges calls for United Nations reform, she said, expressing support for the Secretary‑General’s efforts aimed at making the Organization more responsive and effective. It is up to Member States to drive this change.
    In an increasingly uncertain world, it is more important than ever to remember the core values of the United Nations, she emphasized, voicing her surprise at the need to have to recommit to gender equality. She said she will never celebrate the gains made by women in New Zealand while internationally other women and girls experience a lack of the most basic of opportunities and dignity; “me too” must become “we too”, she stressed. States face a long list of demands, and in the face of isolation, protectionism and racism they must look outward in the spirit of kindness and collectivism. New Zealand remains committed to do its part to build and sustain international peace and security and to defend an open, inclusive and rules‑based international order based on universal values.

IT'S TIME FOR THE WORKER'S PARTY TO BECOME THE NEW FACE OF THE PEOPLE! IT'S TIME FOR THE NATIONAL SOCIALISTS TO TAKE PLACE IMMEDIATELY!!! D:

      Majbah Ahmed What made leaders like Arden and Trudeau so charming is they talk about contributing to a positive impact in the world based on the set value that represent who they are. Tun’s speech is about creating worries by telling a story of a villain and a victim. He lost me in the second part of his speech.

    Jacinda has a way about her often referred to as "Jacinda Mania" in NZ.
    She took over a labour party on the brink of collapse facing a real beating in the upcoming election then a short few months later formed a coalition govt and became PM.
    While I worry a bit about the coalition govt one can only admire her ability and strength.
    Great speech you did us Kiwi's proud Jacinda.

    • @IanLEAU
      @IanLEAU Před 5 lety +6

      dsndicmsa that's a lie, maybe you should ask a minority like me if I feel stifled by some imaginary language police. I would be happy to tell that I have not since this new Government has been in power. However, the last government made me feel like I could never buy a house in New Zealand no matter how hard I work, at least this one makes me feel like they're trying to make things better.

    • @IanLEAU
      @IanLEAU Před 5 lety +3

      Rather than throwing insults and paranoid discourse my way how about you explain YOUR CLAIM that this current government is implementing forceful tactics to stifle your use of language. If you mean something like Canada's Bill C-16 then we actually have nothing like that. As a matter of fact, there is no government policy that suggests the curtailing of specific discourse used in everyday societies, the ONLY kinds of speech that is not tolerated by law is hate speech and EVEN THEN there are still grey areas in which they are allowed to exist (particularly through the process of operating in the frameworks of free speech).
      As for your commentary on housing. Well don't even get me started on where this whole mess started. The previous National government had seen the average housing prices skyrocket. In 2013, an average South Auckland home used to cost $398,000 and in 2017 before the elections, that figure jumped to $698,000. What you don't realise is that while housing prices have increased since this new government has been in power, the rate in which those prices increased actually slowed down.
      Sorry you right wingers seem to have an issue with change, being stuck in the past really makes you hateful doesn't it.

    • @jackohere1878
      @jackohere1878 Před 5 lety +1

      Hilarious-alt right openly racist bigots who love to s...stir are now "moderate conservative " folk-get a grip bro.
      Jacinda is hardly at fault for anything Winnie does.
      From time to time you get a govt and leader you don't like just give them a chance and stay positive as your negativity will weigh you down.
      I know no govt is perfect an will never please everyone but one can only admire Jacinda as a young woman she has risen to the top on NZ politics which is far more than I and very likely you will ever do.

    • @IanLEAU
      @IanLEAU Před 5 lety +1

      Also, your point about housing in Christchurch and RMA (I'm assuming you're referring to the Resource Management Act) falls short of the real truth. The National Party wanted to reform the RMA but it was heavily criticised because there were too many variables at play. The opposition at the time had argued that the reformed RMA would likely follow the same principles as the National Development Act 1979 that favoured larger scaled projects at the expense of smaller ones. This means the act would place far too much emphasis on rebuilding with the idea of economic improvement and considering Christchurch had just experienced an earthquake, they needed homes more than they needed their large businesses.
      To your point about Christchurch homes being the cheapest out of any large city in New Zealand... That's a lie, Dunedin holds that title mate.

It's taken two years to expose his corruption and agenda, hopefully we kiwis can see thro the virtue signaling and hold our political system to account, real issues are not being addressed while distractions mask her passing laws and policy not in tune with kiwi culture. Average kiwi are not aware of the critical political times and are too easily mislead by being too trusting. She could tell the public anything and they would lap it up. @Kevin T if she wrote it. If she wrote it; it was a nothing speech about nothing. Climate change is just a drum they keep banging. And for those that didn't know; New Zealand has existed for ages now. She thinks we have just popped up. But now we have flooded our country with immigration now we truly have no identity. We are sadly multicultural. Boring same as everywhere else. The Maori culture is not my culture. But Maori tokenism is everywhere; the news, the morning breakfast shows. There are more Asians in New Zealand than Maoris. So why the tokenism because we sold our culture to whom ever could afford a ticket here.

      Actually most Kiwis don't fly. Only middle class, upper middle class and the rich do an OE. Most of them stay here drinking the koolaid about how NZ is so great. New Zealanders leaving isn't an asset to the country as they go and pay all that tax in a foreign country. Most of them do not come back considering 1/5 of our whole population (1 million people) permanently lives in another country.
