All wonderful but I prefer the female voice in those roles, especially contraltos. I just heard on CZcams Sonia Prina and Sarah Connelly singing this. Both sublime. We're lucky to have so many unique singers with their style.a Love live Handel and Baroque!
I love Andreas Scholl, perhaps the greatest countertenor I ever saw and heard, but the bass version by Norman Treigle is still my absolute favorite hands down. His deep black bass voice & style are incomparable.
For me the Serbian Marijana Mijanović is the most convincing; with erotic aura and almost goosebump inducing. "Va tacito e nascosto" (Italian; translation, "Silently and stealthily") is an aria written for alto castrato voice in act 1 of George Frideric Handel's opera Giulio Cesare in Egitto, composed in 1724 to a libretto by Nicola Francesco Haym. Sung by the character Julius Caesar, it features extensive solos for natural horn. The first singer of the aria was Senesino (actually Francesco Bernardi; 1686 - 1758); an important Italian opera singer and castrato as primo uomo in numerous operas by George Frideric Handel.
Folks please no one "owns" this role or this aria! Some conceptions are so vast, so multi-faceted and so challenging that no single performer ever reaches the ideal realization. Is there ever a perfect Tristan or Fiordiligi?
I had not yet heard of Raffaele Pe but oh what a fabulous counter tenor ( along with Franco Fagiole) Hopi g to hear a lot more of both. I was a non professional CT, but in my day there were only James Bowman and Paul Esswood, Alfred Deller had retired. .we were really only considered right for church choirs, and only the emergence of Bowman and Esswood seemed acceptable in concert and opera.
I don't find comparisons between countertenors and female alto appropriate. The strengths of the voices of both sexes lie in different areas overall. In this voice range, the female voices have an incomparably stronger power than the male voices. Anyone who likes powerful voices should definitely listen to female altos. The countertenors' voices are much weaker in power, but have a more individual, often more sensitive expression. Andreas Scholl is the best for me as Caesar, not as strong as Marijana but much more individual and suitable as a general.
Wonderful & very different & interesting 3 versions. Having heard each entirely, I must say I'm surprised how Scholl & his orchestra did much simpler than the other two but so full of flavour/character. Pe & Mijanovic are great, maybe I have a penchant for Pe's version. No fave choice though.
I respected all the singers. If I were to pick one, I would say that Raffaele Pe was strikingly inventive and free. I loved what he did with this thrilling aria, sung by so many. Mr. Scholl, much admired, seems to darken his voice more than necessary, I think.
R.P. has the better tempo, expression, energy, less obtrusive ornamentation, and a masterful orch. acc. He also has a fine command of the lingua teatrale -- heavens, it's just more Handelian.
So no James Bowman? David Daniels? Philippe Jaroussky? Bejun Mehta? Tatiana Troyanos? You pick 3 singers, two of whom are obscure newcomers who don’t seem to have a clue about producing a firm legato line and declare they are the only contenders for “the best.” Seriously?
The only here who doesnt have a refined legato is Marijana Mijanović, who has a fantastic voice but no some technique. But Mehta? He's a genius but we dont love him for his tecnique. And Scholl is an absolute standard and still the most awesome timber from all countertenors. Rafaelle Pe is one of the leading singers in this repertoire now, and ive heard him live, hes absolutely wonderful, and a monster in this repertoire. HAs legato and diction
All these are nice but Sarah Connolly sings it best. The horn player is so crucial in this and sometimes lets the side down. Andreas and his horn player were superb though.
For me, one of the best versions of "Va tacito" is by Nathalie Stutzmann or Ewa Podlès. Jennifer Larmore (mezzo) have sing this beautiful too but the tempo was too slow. Mijanović was good as Cesare but sadly her singing technique was not secure so she lost her voice too soon...

I'm a great fan of the countertenor voice, maybe it's the slightly otherworldly quality for me as a woman. A voice somewhere between male and female, child and adult.
So, you’ve come up with another countertenor that I wasn’t aware of. A good find anyway. I’ll have to listen to more of his work.
Scholl is so brilliant in this rendition.
Andreas Scholl is the best voice.
In my humble opinion, Andreas owns this aria. I didn’t know the other versions thanks for that
Andreas Scholl without hesitation!
Andreas Scholl for me.
Marijana is the best Alto ever heard in my life ❤
Andreas Scholl
Andreas Scholl, best of the best!
Andreas Scholl!!!
Andreas Scholl moved my ears
Yes me too. Horn player was the best!
.
moved me to tears
I like very much to compare different versions so that I suscribed this channel. Andreas Scholl seems to me perfect in this role. Thanks
Bravo Scholl !
By all means, Scholl

I can never get enough! So many more operas to listen to.
@@bovnycccoperalover3579 Yes. It’s a whole lifetime of sublime music.
Scholl
Andreas is the king but I really like the two others : Raffaele Pe and Marijana Mijanovic !
MARIJANA WAS THE BEST IN THIS SONG: THANK YOU
Janet Baker - her line never sags - iridescent colors - noble hauteur
Scholl,naravno !

Mijanovic will always be the best to me. The accents and final cadence is just top tier imo. I love Scholl’s though. It’s a classic.
Jennifer Larmore, seeing as she owns the role.

My first Julio Cesare was incomparable Jennifer Larmoor... with Koln/Jacobs
the trumpet in the last clip phenomenal performance

Marijana, Andreas… beautiful. (How about Nathalie Stutzmann, fabulous?)
Also Sonia Prina.
Bryn Terfel
He must have sung in his natural lower register. He’s a great singer; no complaints about that!
I hope that the “Who Sings Best. . .?” person finds many new sets. I keep getting the same ones.-Thanks.
Sarah Connelly

R.P. has the better tempo, expression, energy, less obtrusive ornamentation, and a masterful orch. acc. He also has a fine command of the lingua teatrale -- heavens, it's just more Handelian.

I like Scholl - not this one, but with CONCERTO COPENHAGEN and LARS ULRIK MORTENSEN
Though none matches Janet Baker.
I find countertenors are lacking in the bottom range. I much prefer to hear a good strong lower female voice. The castrati were not countertenors.
