- In this episode, we take our 1990 Chevy Suburban out for its first trip off-road. It doesn't go the way we planned. I also demonstrate a couple of reasons why I still want to LS swap this Suburban even though we have the 383 crate engine up and running.

That is such a cool truck. Looking forward to this build for sure.
Thanks sir, probably won’t be as clean as your build, that things a beauty! But will be a fun project for sure.
If the heat range of the spark plugs is too Hot it can cause dieseling/run on.
Tip: Leave the transmission in gear foot on the brake when you shut off the engine it will help it stop running; Until you figure out the issue.
Yes I have been shutting it off in gear and that does help, maybe I’ll try a set of colder plugs too, thanks for your advice Jeff I always appreciate your input!
I've sworn off carburetors for the rest of my life. The only thing I have with one is the lawnmower. Glad you got it back on the road Randy. Looking forward to the LS swap :)
Yeah it’s been a long time since I’ve owned a vehicle with a carburetor and a distributor. It might work fine if you live in Arizona or something where the temperature doesn’t change much but here in Canada fuel injection is where it’s at for sure.
Cool truck!! Make sure you get a 2011 to 2013 LS. Suburban’s are super popular right now. Twin electric fans the way to go.
Might be happier just adding fuel injection to your 383? The 3.75” stroke in a 383 is actually better for off road 4x4 use. Torque is your friend off roading with tall tires etc.
It definitely does feel like a nice torquey engine and is well suited to the vehicle. Cost is an issue though, I already have the 6.0 LQ4 and would need to buy a Sniper system or whatever kind of fuel injection for the 383. Maybe I’ll do the LS swap temporarily and eventually put EFI on the 383 and swap it back in eventually. Also considering a Cummins swap at some point in the future.
@@LowbuckLS Cummins for the win!
Yeah I think that’s the only way I’d ever get decent fuel economy out of this vehicle.... just wish I could go to Pick n Pull and find a Cummins the way you can find an LS. It’s on my “someday” list.
@@LowbuckLS dont we all.. lol.. fix the 6bt dowel pin problem,, and boost to the moon
@@LowbuckLS Without a good overdrive transmission with lockup I doubt you’ll ever get more than 13-15 mpg from a heavy 4x4 with oversized tires.
Somthing tells me that engine is high compression and it's contenueing to run try hi octane fuel see if the dieseling stops.
Other wise it's awesome and looks fun!!
Thanks Gilbert, I think you’re probably right about it being a high compression engine. I’ll try running some better fuel in it and see if that helps!
E fan swap is simple, so whether you go LS or not, you should drop in the E fans. Takes the strain off the serpentine setup also if for some reason yours has an issue, or maybe the waterpump just seized up causing the whole mess.
That’s the plan for sure
detonation... timing too far advanced and or idle too high. but you can shut it off in drive or reverse ..
BUT... SWAP IT..!
I’ve verified the timing and turned the idle down pretty low but yes I have learned to leave it in gear when I turn off the key. But yes one way or another it will have fuel injection soon!
@@LowbuckLS awesomes.... cant wait to see some progress... love the channel. .. keep up the great work!
